Buy a Rolex Instead of Saving Money

Rob Moore argues that buying a Rolex Daytona, even with debt, beats holding cash because the watch appreciates faster than inflation erodes savings. His 1979 Daytona rose from £800 to £100,000, suggesting 5-8% annual returns. He contrasts this with depreciating purchases like cars and holidays, urging people to borrow only for assets that gain value.

Buy a Rolex instead of saving money. There's a viral post going around. This is not financial advice, but there's something in this. So check this out. If you're a guy in your 20s, buy a Rolex. Go into debt if you have to. This is a viral post that's done the rounds on the internet, 21 million views. On Twitter, and I thought, hmm, he's getting a load of hate. That sounds like really bad advice, but is it? So a Rolex Daytona will probably go up 5 to 8% a year. In fact, I have a birth year Daytona which new would have been £800. And that peaked around about £100 grand. That's not a bad return, whereas if you'd have put £800 in the bank in 1979, that would be worth, what, £150, £200? Now go do your research on those numbers, um, but cash goes down in value over time with inflation, and Rolex Daytonas go up in value over time with inflation. So inflation is good and bad. Inflation is bad if you have savings and cash money. Inflation is good if you have assets. So, um, I don't know if you like watches. Give me a yes in the comments if you're a watch lover. I've just discovered this new watch brand here. I'll tell you about them soon. But Rolex have just whacked up their prices, like what, 7 or 8%? And I guess they're doing that to beat inflation themselves and make their margin on top. So a good Rolex beats inflation, savings in cash loses to inflation. Now you have to buy the right Rolex, and a Rolex Daytona in steel is probably the best one, most historically proven. So here's the thing. People get into debt and borrow to get money and spend on depreciating liabilities and leave money in the bank, and it's like, that's okay to say. But as soon as a guy says, if you're a guy in your early 20s, buy a Rolex, get into debt if you have to, the internet goes wild and has a meltdown. But the principle is this: cash goes down in value, money saved in the bank goes down in value. Over long enough time, it will go There's a race to zero with fiat currency. Do you know, since March 2020, your money has gone down a third in value in cash, but a Rolex Daytona may have doubled in value or not far off. So there's something in this, and maybe it, you know, takes someone like me who's a watch collector and someone who, you know, I'm an asset buyer, I have been, I've been an investor for nearly 20 years to kind of figure this out properly. So Rolex Daytonas go up, savings go down. You own the Rolex, whereas the bank owns your savings. The Rolex will open doors and connections and will be a conversation starter. No money in the bank will be a conversation starter. Maybe the Rolex will give you some confidence, although be careful in London, because you don't want your new Rolex Daytona asset to be a thief owning it. But I mean, the banks own your money. And people borrow for depreciating liabilities all the time. They borrow for a car, they borrow for a conservatory, they borrow for a holiday. They think nothing of it. And that's not considered financial advice. And it should be. Stop borrowing money for depreciating liabilities. You borrow money, you pay interest on debt. You get into debt, you pay interest on debt. And the money goes down in value. At least if you're gonna borrow money, borrow it for assets. So this guy had a load of hate, 'cause he said, "Get into debt if you have to to buy a Rolex Daytona." I don't recommend anyone gets into debt other than good debt, to invest in appreciating assets that go up in value over time and that beat inflation. Now, by the way, Bitcoin, real estate, S&P 500, FTSE 100, these have all gone up dramatically in the last few years. There's a bull run on all of them. But actually, I think there's a lot to be said for this. And this guy, I'm gonna stick up for him. A Rolex Daytona has performed better than cash by a mile. Fact, end of. Gold works very well, Martin. Now look, if you like the idea of understanding how to stop money going down and start getting your money into appreciating assets, some of which you might be able to enjoy, like a Rolex for example, just type yes in the comments. Because here's something I figured out about 18 years ago. I love spending money. Someone on my LinkedIn said, hallelujah, there's finally a guy, i.e., me, that doesn't write all these wanky posts about, oh, having cars is bad and owning watches is bad and having material items is bad. No, no, I actually think it's really good. You know, you might target making $100,000 and you might buy yourself your first Daytona. You might target $1 million and buy yourself your first nice luxury car. What's wrong with that? You might target having a nicer house so you can have a bigger family. So actually, material items can be really good for targets. But what I learned to do is turn depreciating liabilities into appreciating assets. I stopped getting debt on things that go down. I started investing in things that go up. So even my hi-fi, my watches, my cars, nearly all of them have gone up in value. So give me a yes in the comments if you'd like to turn depreciating liabilities into appreciating assets. Them, you know, the successful people come to live events and learn. Um, the masses get a loan and get a conservatory and a car on the loan, and they get a loan and pay interest, and then the thing that they buy goes down in value. But actually, the entrepreneurs and the smart people buy things like Rolex Daytonas and the right crypto and the right gold and silver and the right business and the right stocks, and it goes up in value. And as inflation wipes money away, it also pushes assets up, which is why I believe that Rolex Daytona is better than a savings account. From my experience in terms of Rolex Daytonas go up, all my Rolex Daytonas have gone up, and cash goes down. And they're not going to teach you that in school, and most people aren't going to say that, and people are going to say, oh, that's bad, bad damaging financial advice. Well, it's not financial advice, it's my experience, but it works. So if you'd like to learn 3 days of all of this stuff, come to the Moneymaker Summit Live. Go to robmoore.live/money.
