Harry & Meghan Paid £500k a MINUTE by Spotify 🤔😳

In this video Rob Moore breaks down the recently reported £18 million Spotify deal with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, highlighting that a single 35‑minute episode translates to roughly £500,000 per minute of content. He extracts three core lessons: (1) the power of building a strong personal brand in the creator economy, illustrated by the royal couple’s ability to command massive deals and by examples such as Joe Rogan and John Lee Dumas; (2) the importance of delivering on brand‑deal commitments, noting the PR risk of receiving a huge advance for only one episode; and (3) Spotify’s strategic push to dominate all audio formats, positioning the platform as a potential partner for creators. Moore contextualizes these points within broader trends of media decentralization, the proliferation of social platforms, and the growing value of audio content. He also promotes his own resources (robmoore.com/mm and robmoore.com/mmm) for building personal brands and monetizing content, urging viewers to share and comment.

Harry and Meghan are paid £500,000 a minute by Spotify. Now, this story's just come out in the news, and I think there's 3 really important lessons from it. But get this: Harry and Meghan did an £18 million deal with Spotify. The timing seemed to be pretty good, just before they came out on Oprah. Pushed the Queen gently under the bus. Um, but get this, uh, in a year, or maybe just under, they've done one episode on Spotify. So when you work it out, 35-minute episode, £18 million deal with Spotify, that makes £500,000 a minute. I've churned out about a zillion pieces of content. I'd love to get paid £500 grand a minute. Now, um, Spotify bosses are said to be somewhat miffed by this, but I actually think there's some really good lessons in it as well. So, um, apparently, um, Harry's been on a few podcasts. Harry and Meghan went on The Ellen Show, they went on Oprah. That must have taken a lot of time. And just gently, there you go, Queen, just get you under the bus, um, a little bit, um, and And, but apparently now, after a bit of nudging and pushing from the bosses of Spotify, apparently now they're on it. Maybe they'll do 2 episodes in 2022, who knows. But actually, I do want to give you some useful lessons from this. I do obviously like to comment on what's going on in the world around media and money and personal brand. This is obviously very linked to media and money and personal brand. So number 1, I think the reality of, um, Meghan and Harry is they've built an amazing personal brand. Now, of course, you could say that's easy when you are in the royal family and then you leave it and you are Meghan Markle. But actually, the personal brand now is a very powerful thing that you can build yourself because we're in the creator economy. Um, Spotify are paying millions of pounds for creators. They paid £100 million for the deal with Joe Rogan on Spotify. Uh, no, $100 million. They did £18 million apparently on the Harry and Meghan deal. And so what's the lesson for us here? Well, if you build a personal brand, then you have material value. My friend John Lee Dumas, who has the Entrepreneur on Fire podcast, he's not like a celebrity or anything like that, but he got paid by HubSpot more than a million for the assets of his podcast. So if you build a personal brand, you generate content, you comment on your niche, some things in the media and some things in your niche— you see, I do a bit of both— then as you build up your following and as you build up this brand, you're going to be able to do these brand deals. But lesson number 2 is make sure that you deliver on that, because it's really not that great PR for Meghan and Harry to have done one episode since being paid 18 million. But look, let's be honest, there might be a bit more to it than that. They may have a longer time frame, they may not have missed the deadline. So, you know, let's just see what happens with that. I actually really did want to listen to that content, um, because I think it's really interesting, and I think as a brand they're really fascinating. Um, so, you know, someone's just said in the comments that, oh, sick of hearing you, Rob, it's drivel. This isn't freaking drivel, this is really useful. It's just, you know, I just like to use some of the stuff that's going on in the media, I suppose, a bit of a case study. I mean, let's be honest, in the next 10 years, Harry and Meghan are going to be a very fascinating case study to watch their journey, to see how they build a personal brand, to see how they monetize it, to see the brand deals that they do. And I think that's something that you can do. This is the creator economy now. Now, a lot of people will say, oh yeah, but Rob, Harry and Meghan, it's easy for them, they're massive names. But you can build yourself a name. We are in the decentralization of social media right now. We're in the decentralization of media right now. We're in the decentralization of finance right now. What I mean by that is 20 years ago Rupert Murdoch owned most of the media, and there was 2 or 3 big tech social media companies. Now there's dozens of social media companies, and many people get their media on social media, they get their news on social media, and we are all now, um, more valuable to social media channels. And social media channels are competing for us. So you build a personal brand, you put good content out there, you could do these 6, 7, 8-figure sponsorship deals. The next thing I think is really important, and please do share this if you think any of my content is useful. Spotify are just going all in on audio. I think I read somewhere they want to be the Amazon of audio. Spotify want to dominate and own audio, and they have been dumping hundreds of millions of pounds buying up podcasters, getting into the audio space. They're actually probably one of the best podcast channels now They've really invested in the channel and the program, whereas when you look at iTunes, I know that their plan is to invest more in it, but it's not really as good iTunes for podcasts as maybe other channels are. So Spotify want to come in and own it, which could mean Spotify could be a good place for you to put your audio content. Maybe you could do a brand deal with Spotify one day, who knows. So I actually think it's a great opportunity. So if you'd like to get some gifts from me on building your personal brand, on creating content, on making more money, you can go to robmoore.com/mm. A quick update, um, so Harry and Meghan got paid £18 million to do a brand deal with Spotify to own their podcast, host their podcast, which should be a good deal for both actually. Spotify should get massive reach out of that, and of course Harry and Meghan again gonna get paid well, but they've only done one episode. One episode, um, and that's 35 minutes episode, uh, divided by 18 times 18 million. That's a nice ROI of 500 grand a minute. Spotify boss is a bit miffed, but, um, apparently they're going to pull their finger out. Now I partly say this because, come on, you've got to get your content out there. If you could go on Oprah and go on Ellen, you've got time to do your podcast episodes. It's not that hard. Come on. But I want to listen to this podcast. I'm quite interested in it, actually. Definitely a fascinating case study of the modern personal brand, and I think we can learn a lot from this. So yeah, it's not just me moaning about Meghan and Harry, because I actually, in some ways, I didn't like the Queen under the bus pushing, personally. But at the same time, you know, I wish them well in the free market world and hope that they add value in the content that they create, and they should get paid handsomely for that. And the lessons I think from this are, number one, focus on building a personal brand. Harry and Meghan have built a vast personal brand. Now, okay, we're not all rich celebrities like them or famous in the royal family, but if you put good content out there, you know your audience, and you stay consistent with it, you could do brand deals. I'm— I've got a quarter of a million deal that I'm in discussions with at the moment for a partner sponsor, and that's quite a new thing for me because I've built a decent brand and following. The next thing I would say is make sure that you deliver on your promise. Uh, 35-minute episode within a year is not mega. More time to do it. But you know, if you could go on Ellen and Oprah, you can probably churn out one podcast a week. I'll give them a bit of coaching on churning out content, Harry, Meghan. I churn out tens of pieces of content a day. Um, and then number 3, Spotify going all in on audio. They want to be the Amazon of audio, I read somewhere. They're looking to dominate music, podcasting, all forms of audio. They have their Green Room, which is almost like Clubhouse feature. So take Spotify really seriously, be in the audio content space, because Spotify are dumping hundreds of millions in, and you could take your piece of that. So I think it's a huge opportunity.
