Has Warren Buffett Lost his Marbles?

Rob Moore questions why Warren Buffett won't buy Bitcoin at $25 and is sitting on $144 billion in cash. Moore argues every asset is a deal at the right price and that holding cash during 10-15% inflation is reckless, calling cash "trash" compared to income-generating investments.

Has Warren Buffett lost it? Has he lost his sharp investing edge? Warren Buffett is an investing legend. I've learned so much from him, but there's two things he said recently which has got me to question, I guess, blindly following Warren Buffett's advice. And I'm going to share those two things with you in this quick video. Now, um, this isn't a calling out or shaming of Warren Buffett. In fact, it's the opposite. I think that we should always be critical in that we should challenge anything we decide to do. We should challenge any mentors or any advice, even challenge our own thinking. And you know, it's easy to look at people like Warren Buffett and Elon Musk and just think that you know, these people, you know, they are the oracles and the gurus, the visionaries, and blindly follow their advice. So I've learned so much from Warren Buffett about value investing, long-term thinking, and compounding, and a pragmatic, almost stoic approach to business and life. And I think the guy's a legend, and I hope he lives till he's 150. But, but there's two things he said recently which I am questioning, and I think it's good to question. So the first thing he said is Warren Buffett said that if you offered me all the Bitcoin for $25, I wouldn't buy it. And that's just a silly statement. Even if you don't really invest in Bitcoin, even if you don't really believe in it, That's like saying, Rob, I'll, um, sell you all the Lamborghinis that exist for $10. And I'm like, nah, don't believe in Lambos, they always go wrong, always break down, you know, electric cars are coming, Lambos will be dead. So I thought that was a bit of a mad statement. Now there is context to it, it's, you know, it doesn't invest in what he doesn't believe in, I get that. But at the end of the day, every asset is a deal at a certain price. If I could get a Rolex steel Daytona for $12,000, I'd buy it. Fact. There's certain properties I know in my city that if I could get them at a price, I'd buy them. Any asset— if you could get the Mona Lisa for $25, would you buy it? Ah, but you don't normally invest in art. You don't believe in art long term. But you got offered the Mona Lisa for $25, would you buy it or not? Of course you fucking would. So Warren Buffett said that he wouldn't buy all the Bitcoin for $25. Well, why wouldn't you just buy it for $25 and then sell it for $25 billion, make a quick bit of cash? So I get that he doesn't invest in things he doesn't believe in, and I get he doesn't really trust crypto, and I get that he thinks it's going to go to zero, but that was still a silly thing to say because every asset has a price. So anyway, I just thought it was a bit of a silly thing to say, but it was funny, but it was silly. Now here's the interesting thing. He said, he said he'd buy 1% of all of the real estate in the world for $20, $30 billion. He said he'd buy all— 1% of all the stocks in the world for $20, $30 billion. So that was the first thing I thought that Warren Buffett said that made me think, yeah, uh, not sure about that. I just think he's wrong about that. And, you know, look, he's made more money than me, uh, but he can still be wrong. And now the next thing he's done— this is the second thing that's kind of interesting— is Warren Buffett is holding $144 billion in cash instead of buying more stock. And this— wow. Like, I think at the moment cash is trash. I think at the moment inflation is more than 10%. I think that the government are printing themselves out of debt by, you know, more and more quantitative easing and essentially debasing the currency. I know Warren Buffett doesn't really trust governments, so if he doesn't really trust governments, how is he holding $144 billion in cash? That to me seems madness. Madness to hold that much money in cash. Now let me know what you think, by the way, in the comments. I'm going to tell you why. Context is important. So Warren Buffett says he likes to sleep at night, and he says you need— if you sleep at night by having cash, cash so that, um, you know, you can fight, you can be financially impregnable. He says you're not dependent on the kindness of strangers or friends, and of course you're insured and you've got an emergency fund. So I do think it's wise to hold some cash, but $144 billion I reckon in reality inflation is 15%. In reality, it could be more. So let's say it's 15%. What do you think inflation really is, by the way? So 15% of $144 billion is $22 billion. So by holding cash for a year, Warren Buffett's gonna lose $22 billion. So I get insurance, I get safety, I get sleeping at night, I get emergency funds, but $144 billion in cash right now I think it's the cra— I think it's crazy, crazy. Personally, my thoughts. So they're the two things I wanted to share with you. Wondering if Warren Buffett has sort of lost his edge. Maybe Warren Buffett knows something I don't know. So let me ask you this: would you buy all the Bitcoin in the world for $25? Because Warren Buffett wouldn't. I freaking would, and then I'd flip it for $25 billion. And would you hold $144 billion in cash? Now, of course, we all want to sleep soundly. Um, but surely there's a better leverage of money than cash right now with it going down 15-20%. Do you know your cost of living is the worst it's been since the Second World War? Do you know you're 20-25% worse off than pre-lockdown? So I think holding cash is dangerous. I think you should invest in assets. Now, why doesn't Warren Buffett learn about another asset class? Maybe he thinks he's too old. Maybe he doesn't want to. I don't know. I'd love to talk to Warren Buffett about this, by the way, so maybe I'll try and get him on my podcast. Who knows? Matt, you know, he is late 80s, I think, and the guy is a legend. But I think I don't agree with those two things. Um, but of course you've got to have good alternatives. And, um, you know, maybe, maybe because he's made $100 billion or worth, what, $100 billion, whatever it is, maybe he doesn't need to make more money. Who knows? But let me know what you think about that. Um, would you hold $144 billion in cash right now? And would you reject buying all the Bitcoin in the world for $25? You see, I think that the only way out of this cost of living crisis is to invest. I don't think you can save your way out of this. I think cash is going down in value. I think cash is trash. A lot of people are teaching you to save. I think that's actually— it's good to have some spare money, don't get me wrong, for a rainy day, an emergency. Yes, it is. 3 months living at least. But other than that, you don't want any cash. Cash needs to be invested into assets because only assets and income are going to save you. Now, by the way, you're not going to get any income off cash because inflation is more than 10% and interest is 1%. So you're not going to get any income from cash. You're only going to get income from assets.
