How to be REALLY Smart With Money

Rob Moore argues fiat currency erodes through inflation and "auto-cannibalism," then lays out a three-part formula: beat inflation, harness compounding, and use leverage. He recommends moving cash into gold, real estate, Bitcoin, and businesses while following strict habits like paying yourself first and never spending more than you earn.

How to be really, really smart with money. This is real money. Cash and fiat currency, pounds and pence, dollars and cents, is not real money. So one of the ways to be really smart with money— in fact, I have a formula that I'll share with you in a moment— but one of the ways to be really smart with money is to earn as much money in cash currency as you can and then quickly protect it from itself. Auto-cannibalism. This means the concept of eating yourself. And, and this is what fiat currency does. This is what money does to itself. You earn money, it goes down with inflation, you have lifestyle creep, and then all, you know, your expenses go up, um, you've got increasing inflation, you've got increasing taxation, increasing cost of living, and you earn this thing that starts to eat itself. So you have to earn it and protect it from itself, which I'll come to in a moment. But first things first, for a bit of fun, um, because this is real money here. These are 2-ounce silver coins. These are 1-ounce gold coins. If you can guess exactly how much I paid for these— I bought the silver this year, I bought the gold 15 years ago, there's a nice clue there— if you can guess exactly how much I paid for these 2-ounce coins and these 1-ounce gold coins, I'll give you one or some of them. I just like to do, um, I like to reward, um, you for following my work. I really appreciate you. Give me a guess, total value of these that I paid for and the gold as well. These are 1-ounce Krugerrands. I'm giving you too many clues here. 1-ounce Krugerrand And I've got 2-ounce Queen's Beast and 1, uh, 2-ounce Tudor Beast. There you go. So how to be really smart with money: number 1, earn as much as you can as fast as you can, and then protect it from itself by investing it from depreciating currency into appreciating money or asset. So appreciating money or assets are gold, silver, real estate at the moment for sure, Bitcoin, uh, the S&P 500, FTSE 100 stock market, your own, um, trading business, a business that you invest your time and energy into that makes profit. These are all solid, proven asset classes. Okay, so the next way to be really smart with money is: number 1, pay yourself first. Number 2, never spend more than you earn. And number 3, increase the amount of money that you don't spend and invest it into appreciating assets. If you're hard up, you want to try and save 5% to invest in assets. If you're doing well, 15% into assets. Once you're doing really well, one-third of everything that you earn goes into appreciating assets and stops autocannibalism, stops the concept of it eating itself. Now, there's two ways that your money eats itself. Way number one is that it goes down with inflation and it can't keep up with price rises and the increased cost of living and the increase in taxation. Number 2, autocannibalism, is where you manage money badly. You don't protect it from inflation, you spend it on depreciating liabilities, and you are the problem. So protecting money from itself with my following formula will work very well for you. So I believe that becoming rich, there's a formula, and rich in the form of money, I believe the formula to be inflation plus X times compounding times leverage. Inflation plus X times compounding times leverage. Paul kindly said in the comments If you want to be smart with money, get my books. So I have written books on money, Money Matrix, if you want further learning. But the fundamental rule of becoming wealthy is you have to beat inflation. So inflation plus X is how quickly your money is growing in value year on year. If you beat inflation by 1%, it's growing 1%. If you beat it by 5%, it's growing 5%. If you lose to it by 2%, that compounded over 20 years, you've lost more than half the value of your money. So rule number 1 of becoming wealthy is you need to beat inflation, inflation plus X. Now another rule with inflation is it's more than they tell you. If they tell you it's 2.5, maybe it's 5. I mean, I have a golden rule, really a simple napkin rule on calculating inflation: whatever they say it is, double it. So when they say— when they said it was over 10 in lockdown, maybe it was 20. When they're now saying it's under 3, maybe it's over 5 or even 6%. So you've got to beat inflation, which means investing it in inflation-beating assets. Silver is an inflation-beating asset. Gold is. Real estate is. The S&P 500 and the FTSE 100 is. Any business where you can increase your prices and have a net profit is beating inflation. Bitcoin's been killing inflation. Okay, so you've got to be inflation plus X. Then there's compounding, and compounding is the accumulated growth of your money. Money grows itself if invested well. If you have put money into appreciating assets, it grows. If you take the income and reinvest back into the asset to grow the asset on growing of the asset it grows, and that compounds like the snowball effect of getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger. This is why Warren Buffett doesn't, um, take dividends on stocks. Number one, it reduces the compounding effect, and number two, you've got to pay tax on it. Tax is one of the biggest eroders of your wealth. Tax is your single biggest expense. At least a divorce only costs you half. So That's compounding. Compounding basically means long enough successfully beating inflation. That's essentially what compounding is. And then the final part of the formula is leverage. And leverage is leveraging time, leveraging money, leveraging banks, leveraging information, leveraging knowledge, leveraging software. Leverage is essentially a force multiplier. Archimedes said, give me a lever long enough and I will move the world. So, um, are you using the bank's money to invest in assets? Are you leveraging your time to beat inflation and earn, you know, a good net profit margin? And what is it they say? Turnover is sanity. No, turnover is vanity. Profit is sanity. Okay, so leverage is force multipliers, um, tools you can use that compound and grow your wealth, or, or you earn on more than you put in. So if you have a mentor, you earn on their time, experience, and knowledge. If you borrow money from the banks for real estate, you earn on the bank's money. You earn on the tenant renting from you. You earn on the capital appreciation. You earn on the inflation. Okay, Aaron has said, um, morning from Seattle. He's just finished reading my book Money. Hey Aaron, and welcome everyone.
