If someone has screwed you for money, do this ONE thing

Rob Moore argues that if someone scams you for money, skip the lawyers and legal battles. Instead, thank them for the lesson, extract what you learned, and earn back the amount through new ventures. He shares how court cases often cost as much as you'd recover, especially for smaller sums.

If someone has screwed you for money, I believe there's one best thing that you can do. Now look, we all get screwed for money at some stage— schemed, scammed, robbed, conned, bribed, you name it, it's happened to us all. And there are a lot of dangerous roads you can go down trying to get revenge and chase and get back money that you got screwed for, or people that screwed you. You can throw good money after bad and good time after bad, and it can feel like a real injustice. But I believe that there's really only one thing that's the best thing to do if you get screwed for money. I've been screwed for money, I've been in court, I've been sued, I've sued, I've seen a lot. And, um, I remember one time I took an ex-employer to court. It took well over a year, and the money we got back, even though we won, was about the same as the lawyer fees. I can imagine that Johnny Depp winning his case Well, the lawyer fees would have been way more, probably— can't say for sure, but probably— than the damages that he got. And think of all the time and the energy and the emotion. So first off, don't spend loads of time chasing bad money. Don't spend a load of money on lawyers. You know, when there's disputes around money, there there's one winner and only one winner, and that's the lawyer. If you win, the lawyer wins. If you lose, the lawyer wins. And same for the other side. And the lawyers have— one of the things I think is wrong in the world that's an injustice is that the lawyers get to charge an hourly rate. The lawyer should have a job price. Oh, please quote me for this job. Yep, that'll be 3 grand. Done. Anyone else, they quote for the job. But when you quote for the hour, that is such a misalignment. So be really careful spending a load of time and a load of money and getting lawyers trying to get back screwed money. Now, of course, if it's hundreds of thousands of pounds, then you may need to seek legal counsel, and you may need some financial recompense or insurance. So you know, I'm probably not talking vast sums of money. Also, you can get very bitter going for revenge, trying to screw them over, spending years trying to get them back. So do you know what I think the best thing to do is if you've been screwed for money? As long as it's not massive money, is to thank them, to be grateful, to understand that they probably taught you a better lesson than people that gave you money. And were supportive. Because when you get support, you become dependent. When you get challenged, you become independent. So actually, the best lessons you get are the lessons you lose. The best lessons I've had in money are the lessons I've lost and the times I've been turned over, or the times, you know, where I've been defeated or I made mistakes. So instead of spending so much time and money and energy being bitter and trying to get back that little bit of money you got screwed, thank them. Be grateful for them. Know that they were your greatest teachers, and then use that lesson as motivation and go and make 2x or 10x what you lost back. Now, if you're Johnny Depp and you've got a reputation among hundreds of millions Or it's— if it's hundreds of thousands of pounds and you can prove it, maybe you got a lawyer up. But you know, in— I would probably say 80-ish, most of the cases, in relatively small amounts of money, get the lesson, move on, be grateful, thank them, understand how you need to get better, not bitter. Let it go so you can grow. And then go and make 2x or 5x or 10x. And I've actually got experience in this because my ex-boss, you know, he screwed me over for a decent amount of money. He didn't pay salary and comms. He wrongfully dismissed me. By the way, this was won in court, so it was proven. Um, but I endeavored to be better, to be successful. It gave me motivation. And probably 18 months, 2 years later, he went bust. Unfortunately for the customers and some of the staff, uh, and we went on to make many hundreds of millions. Now it's not really like a fuck you at him, but that did motivate me. It was definitely there, and I was angry for probably 2, 3, or 4 years, and I turned that anger into energy and that negativity into motivation and energy. So I believe that's mostly the best thing you can do if you've ever been screwed for money. Rather than get bitter, spend time, energy, and loads of money and lawyers and everything else trying to chase them down. The thing is as well, you know, you chasing them and trying to get revenge on them is over there. Your successful destination is over there. So it just takes you way away. Rosemary said karma caught up on him. Well, you know what, it was what it was. That was his lesson that he needed, and I got the lesson that I needed. But actually, you know, they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and it's definitely the same with finances. Um, so, you know, what doesn't kill you financially makes you stronger, and you get great lessons. But you don't get the lessons if you don't see the lessons, if you don't heed the lessons, if you don't focus on the upside rather than always focusing on the downside. Simon has asked, how much am I worth? Um, my accountant My wife and my business partner have sworn me to secrecy to never say how much I'm worth. I've made hundreds of millions, I'm worth many millions, and that's all you're going to get out of me because I don't want to upset my accountant, my wife, and my business partner. And that's probably not that relevant enough. I mean, I became financially free in my 20s and a millionaire by around age 30/31, give or take. Decamillionaire a few years later, and that's all you're getting from me. Um, but yeah, done hundreds of millions in revenue as an entrepreneur in the last 15 or 16 years. So there you go, you got something. So let me know what you think, by the way. Um, so Leticia said there someone screwed her for 5 grand. Um, but you know, that 5 grand, Leticia, is probably worth way more in the lesson. Getting screwed for 5 grand is probably the cheapest lesson you could get, because 10 grand, 20 grand, 50 grand, and 100 grand opportunities or possible being screwed over in the future will not happen because you got the good lesson. In every stressing hides a blessing. So let me know what you think in the comments, just a quick one. So Leticia has said, yes, in divorce you lose tons of money and the winners are the lawyers. Look, divorce brings great emotion. And I know many people who've gone through it, and we've all had our ups and downs in our relationship. But here's one thing if you can commit to do, will save you hundreds of thousands of pounds and hundreds of hours, is commit to agreeing a settlement and a breakup without a lawyer, and only get a lawyer to sign the agreement. You'll need to obviously legally divorce, but all the negotiations, stay friendly, get rid of your emotions. And discuss it like adults with your soon-to-be ex-partner. I know it's hard. It's easy to say from this point of view, but if you can do that, you will save hundreds of thousands or millions. You will save hundreds of thousands in legal fees, and your time and your energy and your emotions will be so much better. Emotions erode wealth, so manage them and control them. Just like Emma said here, time and energy are so valuable. And learning a lesson can be very powerful. It's funny because sometimes being screwed over for 50 quid or 100 quid or $100, this can feel like being screwed over for a million. I was walking through Bond Street in London and a young lad stopped me and said, I'm trying to raise money for a fight. I'm boxing, I'm trying to raise money for a fight. Have you got 20 quid? And I gave him 20 quid. And they said, give me another £20 from a friend. And I end up dishing out about £100. And it's funny, I carried on walking feeling really good that I'd given some young hustlers who's had something about them some money. And then my wife said to me, do you know that's a scam? I've heard of that scam before. You've just been scammed. And I immediately felt awful and angry and stupid and dumb and guilty, and all these emotions overwhelmed me. And it's funny because had my wife not said that, I'd have felt really good and encouraged and positive and generous that I was helping these young people, because, you know, I always give money around to various different people and I buy things for people in queues in shops or whatever, and I always do that, and I do it because it feels good. But I felt like I've been screwed out of £100, which for me was— it's not a lot of money. And honestly, the emotion— let that emotion go, because a minute before I felt really good about myself. Michael said, well, I wish I could have had you as my friend in my 20s. Like they say, on the path to revenge, you dig two graves. Exactly. That is a great quote. On the path to revenge, dig two graves. So revenge and bitterness and anger and resentment and chasing, you know, good time after bad and good money after bad, it's just not a good road to go down. So quick summary: if you've been screwed for money, the one thing I think that you should do, as long as it's not hundreds of thousands of pounds and you've not got major defamation is to let it go, to be grateful, to be thankful, to see the lesson, to realize I got screwed for $500 here, that will save me $5,000 in good lessons. You know, no good deed goes unpunished, and in every stressing hides a blessing. I hope you can see yours if you've been screwed. Sorry if you've been screwed, but actually not, because they're your best lessons. Get the lesson, transcend the lesson. It won't happen next time. Because what we don't want is for you to become downbeat, downtrodden, angry, resentful. They are— I got screwed once, I'm not going to start another business. Um, I tried to be successful and people just screw you over. You know, you people— if to be successful, people screw you over, I'm just going to carry on with my job and stay in my lane. So here's the thing, we're all going to get screwed. But the thing is, you take a punch, you lay on the floor, you don't get up, you're never going to be successful. You've got to take the punch and get up. What is it Winston Churchill said about success? It's going from failure to failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. Don't lose that enthusiasm or that belief or that trust just because you got screwed over once or twice. But you must get the lesson. And here's the thing, this is important to say, and you're probably not Some people aren't going to like this, but it's true. If you keep getting screwed over, what's the common denominator? Just like if you keep having failed relationships, who's the common denominator? So there's some lessons in there. Thanks for tuning in. Make sure you join Rob.team.
