Is ‘passive income’ a scam?

In this YouTube monologue, Rob Moore tackles the question “Is passive income a scam?” He argues that passive income is a scam only when it is sold as a get‑rich‑quick, no‑effort scheme that adds no value. Conversely, when genuine assets—both digital (personal brand, podcasts, YouTube channels, membership sites) and physical (real estate, businesses, stock market investments)—are built, they can generate real, recurring income. Moore illustrates the concept with examples such as the band Slade’s annual Christmas royalties, Mariah Carey’s holiday hit, and his friend Mark Victor Hansen’s half‑billion book sales, all of which produce ongoing cash flow. He shares his own experience of earning millions through books, a training company, real‑estate, ad revenue, and a membership platform (rob.team), noting that his income mix includes both active (keynote speaking, consulting, mentoring) and passive streams. Moore provides practical advice: you can’t save your way to passive income; you must invest and create assets, leveraging sweat equity and resourcefulness, especially via digital channels that require minimal upfront cost. He warns against snake‑oil schemes and promotes his members‑only site, rob.team, which offers a new 9‑part “How to Invest” series, masterclasses, and ongoing content to help entrepreneurs build multiple streams of recurring income. The video ends with a call‑to‑action to join rob.team for a low‑cost “large coffee” subscription.

Is passive income a scam? I get asked this a lot. Let me ask you another question. Is working 40 hours a week for 40 years and giving half of it to the government a scam? That's something to think about. But anyway, the answer to this question, is passive income a scam, is yeah but no but yeah but no but yeah but no but yeah. And the reason that is, is if you think you can get rich overnight in your pants doing fuck all, pressing a button, trading forex, yes, no, buy, sell, drinking piña coladas, adding no value to the world, then yes, passive income is a scam. You have to work hard enough not to have to work hard. You have to set in order to forget. However, if you build assets, digital assets as well as physical assets, if you work hard enough not to have to work hard, then passive income is very real. For example, do you know the band Slade? Have you ever heard their Christmas number one? It's Christmas! I'm sure you have. They wrote It's Christmas in the 1970s, and they've been earning £500,000 every Christmas for the last 40 years. That is passive income, my friends. My friend Mark Victor Hansen has sold half a billion books. That is passive income, my friends. So passive income is a scam if you treat it like a scam and you intend to offer no value, or you're getting sold a load of bullshit get-rich-quick overnight on the internet. However, if you build true assets that offer value, assets that have capital and growth and income, then passive income is real. Now, I say this humbly, but I make many millions of pounds in passive income. I've written 16 books, and so you don't need to sell that many copies per book when you times that by 16, by And monthly by yearly, that income is really good. I have the membership site Rob.team. I have Facebook ad revenue. I have my podcast sponsors and my YouTube advertisers and my— actually have a main sponsor. I have real estate and properties and a training business that I own but I'm not particularly operationally involved in. So I make many millions a year in recurring passive income. Now, is some of it passive? Yes. But is, is some of it active? Yes. Is some of it recurring? Yes. And is some of it occurring? Yes. Because if I can earn active income and passive income, why would I just take one? Why wouldn't I take both? I get, get paid good money to do my keynote speaking. I'll occasionally take some consultancy. I get paid good money to mentor. Now, that's not passive income. That's active income, but it's bloody good active income, and I'm quite happy to take it. So it's not like you're a loser if you exchange time for money, and you're only a winner if you have assets that produce recurring income. Because on both sides of the extreme— on one extreme, it's like there's people selling all this get-rich-quick snake oil bullshit expecting you to, you know, to get rich in a day or by pressing a button or on automation. That's one extreme. But on the other extreme, it's like, "Oh, well, if you exchange time for money, you're a loser. You should never exchange time for money." I actually think if you could get occurring and recurring income, active and passive income, why wouldn't you? So beware of the schemes and scams, but passive income itself is not a scam. But I like to change the wording. I like to call it residual income, recurring income, and then maybe one day it'll be relentless income. So here are a few little tips for you. Tip number 1 is you can't save your way to passive income. You have to invest in order to get passive income. The second thing is you need to build assets. It's only assets that create passive and recurring income. Working doesn't. Exchanging your time for money doesn't. You have to build assets. Now, yeah, those assets can be physical like real estate or in the stock market, or they can be businesses I have a business that does £15 million plus a year, one of my companies. I think I have 7 companies. So, but it can also be digital. So for example, it could be your social media, your personal brand, your podcast, your YouTube, your content, your membership site. Digital is great because it's quicker, easier, and faster. You know, I've got tens of millions of debt and put tens of millions over the last 15 years into my property portfolio. And I've generated a quarter of a billion in revenue in my training company, but reinvested millions and millions of profits into that. Whereas my podcast, my YouTube, my Facebook, my social media, it's cost me virtually nothing other than creating the content like this. So there are some things to think about when it comes to passive income. So look, if you would like to generate some passive income, some recurring income, if you'd like to build some digital assets, if you'd like to learn how to invest in those digital assets to produce that recurring income, I recommend that you join my members area, which is called rob.team. But you need to move away from the get-rich-quick schemes and scams. You need to do it properly. You need to set to forget. You need to work hard enough not to have to work hard. You need to know how to build assets or invest in assets. Now, by the way, you don't necessarily need any money to get into assets. You need resources and resourcefulness, not just money. You can build digital assets without money. So there's actually a module on the How to Invest series in Rob.team, which is how to invest with no money. And I know that sounds like a paradox. How do you invest with no money? But you invest your time, you build something on your sweat equity. So there's a whole module on that. And if you've not got much money, but you've got some money and you want to protect it from the government and the banks, then just go and join rob.team. Open a new window and type in rob.team. Now look, I think it's good to protect yourself from schemes and scams. And you should be warned. You know, there's a lot of snake oil fly-by-night out there, but at the same time, you must always, I believe, believe, hold on to the belief and understand that passive income is real. Books create passive income, audiobooks create passive income, music and royalties create passive income. Your Facebook Lives or your YouTube videos or your Instagram or your TikTok videos create passive income. You can get brand endorsements and advertising and sponsorship. That's passive income. The stars and the badges and the donations from your followers and fans, that's passive income. The membership site that you could set up, the merch shop you have online, it can all be passive income. In fact, a company can be passive income if you're strategic rather than operational. And there are some dream stealers out there that are saying that everything that's passive income is a scam. No, it's not. You know, ask Slade. They wrote a Christmas number one in the 1970s. They still get half a million for it every Christmas. Mariah Carey, her Christmas number one is churning her out millions. My friend who's written, or co-written, get this, my friend Mark Victor Hampson, he really is a friend, he's co-authored 300 books. Most of those someone wrote for him, and he sold half a billion, b-b-b-billion. He sold half a billion books. Even if he only got 10 cents per book, book. You do the maths, it's millions. And he even got other people to write them. That's power. And if you want to create that power for yourself, that leverage for yourself, that income for yourself, I recommend you join Rob.team, my members area for startup entrepreneurs, scale-up entrepreneurs, for people who want to do side hustles, make extra income, build a business, multiple streams of recurring income.
