Just ‘Be Yourself’ they say 😆

Rob Moore unpacks why "just be yourself" is harder than it sounds. He argues you need money to be truly authentic, since financial freedom gives you time and removes desperation. His framework: ask yourself daily questions about identity and values, regulate your emotions instead of reacting to triggers, and accept that people won't like the real you.

'Just be yourself,' they say. Reminds me of the Oasis lyric, 'You gotta be yourself.' Like it's that easy. Oh yeah, just be yourself because it's that easy. No, I actually think being yourself is one of the hardest things to do. Who are you? I mean, do you ask that question to yourself every day? Who am I? What am I supposed to do with my life? What's my purpose? And then there's everyone out there saying, just be yourself. Those people are often confused. So I find it an interesting paradox. On everyone telling you to be yourself when often they're not being themselves. And who are you anyway? So I thought I'd do a little live on this and give you a couple of tips. A little bit different from my normal content on money and the government, but hopefully this will be useful to you. First off, have you sat down to think Who am I? What do I like about myself? What don't I like about myself, but I'm okay with myself? What will I accept and what will I not stand for? What do I stand for and what do I stand against? Who is the natural, pure me? The one that's not emotional, not irrational, not erratic. Am I making smart life decisions when I'm emotional or when I'm balanced? Do you ask yourself these questions? Because I think you should. Because everyone out there is telling you to be yourself, but they're not giving you any freaking instructions. 'Just be yourself.' Well, what the fuck does that mean? Now, I'm gonna give you a definition which came from a book I read, actually. I think the book is called The Courage to Be Disliked. And I would say you are very close to being yourself when you present the you to the world with authenticity and balance, and you have the courage to be disliked for it. Because I actually think that often we aren't ourselves. We either minimize ourselves and hide ourselves or maximize ourselves and pump out the ego because we have a fear of being disliked. Because we worry about what other people think about us, because we fear judgment and ridicule and hatred and ostracization and trolling and criticism on social media. But if you can express yourself in a way that feels true, where you don't have guilt, you don't have shame, you don't have bravado, So it's a pretty balanced, natural expression, and it's not filtered through worrying about what your friends, your family, your customers, your clients, social media, and everyone else will think about you. Your boss, your hero, your kids. I reckon that's a pretty good definition. Of just be yourself. I would say it's having the courage to be disliked. What do you think about that, by the way? Let me know in the comments. Do you have any other thoughts on how to be yourself? Because some people are minimizing who they are and hiding who they are and playing small and living a lie because they're scared of judgment, ridicule, shame, and being disliked and ostracized by others. Other people are puffing themselves up and ego and aggrandizing themselves, sort of showing off really, to try and get the love and respect and admiration. Many of us are emotional, so sometimes people say, I'm just being authentic. No, you're being a twat. A lot of people out there being a bit of a dick and then just say, I'm just being myself. But actually you're not. You're being triggered emotionally, and those emotions are hijacking you. And then you think you're being authentic, but you're not. You're triggered. Now, there's nothing wrong with emotion. There's nothing wrong with passion. But Can you sit down afterwards and think, I had control of that emotion, I had control of that passion? Or did that control you? Because if your emotions control you, you're not being authentic and you're not being yourself. If you control your emotions, then you're being authentic and then you're being yourself. What do you think about that? That's a pretty good definition. Yeah, Wendy said you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't, so you might as well be yourself. I agree with that. They will love you and they will loathe you despite you. They will hate about you what's great about you. No matter who you are and what you do, some people will hate you, hate you anyway. So you might as well just be yourself. But so many people saying that— well, they're not saying those nice little sound bites I just said, but so many people are saying, just be yourself. But it's actually probably one of the hardest questions to answer. Let me ask you this, and if you want to share, please share. Who are you? You weren't asked that at school. You weren't taught to ask that to yourself every day. You weren't given the tools to go on the journey to discover who you are. And by the way, it could change over time, so it's something you have to keep asking. So if you ask yourself every day, who am I and what am I supposed to do with my life? 'Who am I and what am I supposed to do with my life?' I think you'll get closer to finding out who you are. And then, because here's the thing, you can't be yourself if you don't know yourself. How can you? Most people don't know themselves. I mean, it's pretty freaking complicated being a human being. We are an ironic clusterfuck of paradoxes. There you go. That's my definition of humanity. An ironic clusterfuck of paradoxes. Um, so if you ask yourself every day, who am I and what do I want to do with my life, you're going to get closer to being yourself. And then if you express yourself with authenticity and not triggered emotions, you're not, um, aggrandizing or minimizing yourself, you're expressing yourself rather than repressing yourself. And then you put yourself out to the world, whether it's family and friends or social media or clients you put yourself out to the world authentically and honestly, embracing your strengths and weaknesses equally, and you have, have the courage to be disliked for it, then I think that's who you are. So let me know what you think about that. Now, one thing I will say about being yourself, which a lot of people don't say, by the way, so this bit's important— a lot of people don't link money with being yourself. And here's the thing: can you truly be yourself if you are broke? Be honest about that. Can you truly do what you want with who you want, go where you want, and fully express yourself if you're broke? I don't think you can, or at least I think it's much harder. Now, money exaggerates your traits, so you can be more yourself with money. Now, of course, you can become greedy and powerful with money, but that's up to you. But if you honor and express your traits, money will exaggerate those traits, those great traits in you. So actually, for you to truly be able to be yourself, you need to have decent finances to be able to do that. You need to make, manage, and master money. You need to have assets that produce income so you can liberate yourself and have time to express yourself fully. And I would suggest you need to change the environment because you will repress yourself rather than express yourself. And if you repress yourself for long enough, you have to express yourself through anger, retaliation, resentment.
