My Deep (Money) Shame

Rob Moore was £50,000 in debt in 2005, living with his parents. Within three years he cleared it, earned £100,000 in his first year as an entrepreneur, and became a millionaire by 31. He argues money is freedom, not just a tool, and urges people to treat it as seriously as health.

My deep money shame. This is something I've never ever ever revealed on a live video, and I've done thousands of them. I'm a bit worried about sharing this because I feel a lot of shame and embarrassment about it, but I know there are a lot of people out there who are struggling who might be able to relate, who are broke. And therefore, me sharing this hopefully will help and inspire you to make the change that I did in 2006. So before I share with you this story— well, this real-life event that happened, which was a really shameful, um, experience for me In 2005, I was £50,000 in personal debt— credit cards, car loans. I even had to sell the car and I still had 3 and a half years left on the car loan. That's not good. And then fast forward 3 years. In my first year, I got rid of the £50 grand's worth of debt and earned £100 grand clear. And then by age 31, I became a millionaire, and by age 35, a deca-millionaire, and then I kind of stopped counting. And that was like 10 years ago. And I've done more than a quarter of a billion in sales in my businesses, owned 340 rental units, sold another 400 or 500 property deals. And the reason I tell you all of this is because I was broke and I felt useless and embarrassed and shameful and dependent. I lived with my mum and dad nearly age 26, which to me was a massive embarrassment. I worked in my dad's pub. I earned £200 a week cash and spent £300 a week. Um, my dad didn't really want me there. He wanted me to do something with my life, and I didn't really want to be there, but I was so scared. I was really scared to take the leap. I was good at art. I could have started trying to be an artist, you know. I was into clothes and fashion. I could have started like, um, you know, an e-commerce business. But I was, I was scared. Scared. You know, what if I fail? What if people think I'm a loser? And the embarrassment and the shame of trying something and losing. Dario said there's no shame in here, but I actually haven't got to the main story. But this context is important. So I was scared to start my own business and to do what I really wanted to do and to move away from what I, if I'm honest, I really hated to do because of the ridicule, the judgment, and the fear of failure. And I'm so glad that I took the leap in 2006/07. Otherwise I'd be a quarter of a billion in sales lighter. I own 14 companies, have the UK's largest property training company. I'd have none of this. I might have $250,000 worth of debt if it wasn't for the shame that made me make a change. So my ex-girlfriend, um, I really liked her, and I was absolutely broke. And when I asked her out, I had to say, is it okay if you pay? Now, all the debate around who pays for the first date No one says, uh, go out and ask the girl if it's all right in an embarrassed way that she pays. So, and like, I felt so embarrassed, so embarrassed. And every time we went out, I had to say, is it okay if you pay? I just haven't got any money at the moment. And throughout our whole relationship, she paid for everything. We went to Ireland on a romantic weekend. She paid for it. Um, she paid for every dinner, everything we ever did together. She paid for everything. And every time she— well, no, not every time she paid. Every time I thought about going out with her, I felt the immediate shame. Marcus said she sounds like a keeper. Um, and I just felt shame all the time, all the time. Now look, this didn't work out because obviously I'm with my wife now and I'm happy. Um, this didn't work out, and I remember when we split up thinking, I'm gonna be successful, I'm gonna do something with my life, I'm gonna make a load of money. Now part of it was to show her what she was missing, yes, but I promised myself that once I made some money, I was going to write her a check and pay her back. Now she didn't give me this money as a loan. You know, she was just being nice. But I couldn't carry the shame of not providing and not being valuable and not being a real man. Honestly, I was not a real man. I didn't feel like one. So anyway, a couple of years down the line, I made a load of money. We'd fallen out of touch, and I wrote a big check and I sent it to her, and she bloody well cashed it as well. Can't believe it. But In that moment, I realized I had freedom. Now all the shame went when she cashed that check because I felt the emotional debt was paid back, and I felt free because I could support myself. I, I put my kids through private school, obviously support my wife, I support my whole family, I retired my parents, I support, what, 135+ staff that I have. I support In fact, I support hundreds if not thousands of people, and that feels amazing. And there's no shame in that. There's just pleasure and value and joy in that. And it makes me feel like a man, and it makes me feel that I'm contributing. And I wanted to tell you that story because a lot of people say, "Oh, money doesn't make you happy." Fucking does! And money made me really unhappy when I had none. When I was broke, I was so unhappy, and there was so much shame. And now thankfully, you know, I became a millionaire freaking 2 millennia ago, um, but now that I've become, you know, very wealthy, I've seen both sides. I've seen being broken, I've seen being rich. And you can be a better, less shameful, more passionate, more valuable version of yourself if you honor yourself and you earn really good money and you don't dismiss it as not being important and you actually make it important. Because money is freedom. Money is philanthropy. Money is value. Yes, Colin, I always say that broke people are more obsessed about money than rich people because they have to always think about how do they pay their next bill, whereas rich people don't. So, you know, the broke people say, oh well, rich people are always obsessed about money. No, no, it's the broke people who have to obsess about money. I do not obsess about money anymore. I don't even really think about it because because I've got an abundance of it. I could retire 10 future generations. So I just— hopefully you can relate to that story. Hopefully it inspires you to take making money seriously, like you would your health, like you would your time. And know that I had a lot of shame and guilt around money and being broke, and I've changed that, and my life is so much better for it.
