Shame, Self loathing & Money

Rob Moore describes how shame from financial scarcity nearly destroyed him until he became a millionaire before 31. He argues money is the most important tool in life, directly tied to self-worth, and that building wealth is the fastest way to overcome emotional barriers like guilt and fear of success.

Shame, self-loathing, and money. I felt intense shame around money probably until I was about 30 years old. I became a millionaire just before my 31st birthday, and the shame and loathing I felt around money my whole life didn't go away, but it made it a lot better. You know, they say money isn't everything. Well, it is when you haven't got any. And I want to share a story about my own shame around money and self-loathing, because a lot of people don't know this about me, and I think it could really help you. Because really, it's the story we tell ourselves about money that has a big impact on whether we make any. And it's the environment that we were raised in and whether money was abundant or scarce. And, you know, our formative years growing up and our experiences with money which shape, you know, how the relationship we have with money. You know, money makes a brilliant servant but a terrible master. And I think that's worth remembering. So when I was in my early 20s, I was dating this girl and I really liked her. And I was so broke I couldn't even afford one dinner. Like, I couldn't even afford afford mine or hers. I couldn't even go on a date with her and, and have nothing and let her eat and pay for hers and not have anything because I couldn't even afford half a dinner. And, um, I didn't tell her for ages. I just avoided going out with her and just, you know, went to my— came to mine or, or whatever. And then one day I opened up to her and I said, look, you know, I'm struggling financially and I felt deep intense shame when I did that. And she said, "Look, don't worry, you know, I earn good money. I can pay for everything." And that just doubled down on the shame and the self-loathing. I understand maybe some people would like to hear that, but you know, as a man, you know, who's supposed to have something about him, that just made the self-loathing and the shame worse. But, you know, I wanted to be able to do things with her. So I remember she took me to Ireland on like a, you know, weekend trip away and she bought everything and paid for everything. And for maybe 6 months of us dating, she paid for everything and I hated it. I hated it. And I felt such deep, intense shame and self-loathing that I was broke and failing. And she seemed to enjoy it, I think. I don't know why, but anyway, so the relationship didn't work out. And I started my own business. And fast forward to now, I've done more than a quarter of a billion in revenue sales. And things are much better. And about 9 months, I think, after us splitting up, I remember walking to a house with an envelope and posting a check in her letterbox, and I'd worked out all the money she'd spent on me. It was a good few grand, and because I'd done all right and made a bit of money, I wrote her a check. She bloody cashed it, and then afterwards later said, oh, I realize now that the relationship is over, um, and, uh, you know, we didn't talk about it anymore. But to me, I had a debt to her. I actually didn't. She was generous. And she didn't, she was just generous. But I had a debt to her because I wasn't self-sustainable. And I felt such shame and such self-loathing and hatred for myself for not even being able to go out and pay for a date for a girl. And actually that was a really good thing now because like, for example, I went out to a lovely restaurant just recently, and tiny sliver of sushi is like £9, and if you just have the starters, it's like £300. And I just felt such great gratitude that I can afford to do this. And if any of you ever know me or meet me, I'm always the guy paying for the dinner for everyone. Very difficult to buy me dinner because of that formative experience. And I don't feel the shame and the loathing anymore because I'm financially well off. And I've earned it. I didn't get given it. I've earned it. And so much so, I was impelled— is that a word? Impelled? Compelled to pay a debt that wasn't even mine. So if you have any shame or guilt or loathing around money, the best way to get over that is to make some. The best way to solve most of your problems is to be good financially. Because there's too many people saying that money doesn't matter, money doesn't make you happy. Well, maybe you'd love to take your family abroad. You know, your aging parents, you'd love to give them some great experiences before they pass away. Well, that costs a lot of fucking money. Or maybe if someone you know is ill, you can pay for their treatment immediately. Or maybe you want to be able to see your kids all the time and therefore not work all the time, and that costs a lot of money. And people are so lefty and wokey and inaccurate about the reality of the importance of money. Money is the tool we've universally agreed exchanges value. Money is the single most important tool you're ever going to use in your life. And by the way, people say, oh no, no, any tools for health is more important. But money buys the tools for health. So hopefully me sharing with you my, um, shame and loathing— and by the way, I have much higher self-worth now. I still have my own personal issues, we all do, but There's nothing like being wealthy for your self-worth.
