The 6 Money Fails of the Broke ⛔️

In this monologue-style personal‑finance video, the presenter outlines six common behavioural patterns that lead people to go broke and contrasts them with the opposite actions that can build wealth. The six "epic fails" are: (1) trying to look rich by overspending on status symbols; (2) spending more than you earn, violating the timeless laws of paying yourself first and never spending beyond income; (3) failing to track or budget expenses, which prevents mastery of one’s cash flow; (4) buying depreciating liabilities (cars, fashion, gadgets) instead of acquiring appreciating assets (property, digital assets, personal brand); (5) making emotional purchases when high, low, or otherwise unbalanced; and (6) saving without investing, which leaves money vulnerable to inflation. The speaker emphasizes that these patterns are not taught in schools and that reversing them—acting modestly, living below means, measuring cash flow, acquiring assets, regulating emotions, and investing after saving—will reliably generate wealth. The video also references the current cost‑of‑living crisis, the presenter’s best‑selling UK money book, a long‑running podcast with billionaire guests, and a subscription platform (Rob.team) offering financial education, masterclasses, and community support. Throughout, the tone is urgent, conversational, and promotional, urging viewers to share the video, type “podcast” for free resources, and consider joining the paid platform.

Going broke is predictable. People who go broke or are broke have certain behavioral patterns, as do people who get rich. So I'm going to share with you right now the 6 main epic fails that makes people go broke. And this could be rich people that go broke or broke people that go even broker. So, are you ready? Number 1: So many people are going broke trying to look rich. They're spending money they don't have. They're trying to impress people on social media. They're getting a load of finance and credit for things they can't afford. They're chasing material fantasies, and they're comparing themselves to other people. So you can either go broke trying to look rich— that sounds like a rap song— or you can get rich by temporarily acting broke. So if you reduce your overhead and live like a little bit lean and broke for just a few short months or years, you'll get rich, whereas it's very easy to go broke trying to look rich. So that's number 1. Number 2 is they spend more than they earn. So there are 2 fundamental laws of money that go back hundreds of years. Number 1 is pay yourself first. Number 2 is never spend more than you earn. So are you paying yourself first? Because broke people pay themselves last after their bills and overheads and direct debits and fines and taxes and everything else. By the way, I've just added you a 7th there. So make sure you're paying yourself first, you're saving and investing before all of your expenses and overheads come out. Um, and never ever ever ever ever ever spend more than you earn. Earn. Never, never in a month. Even if you only spend $100 more each month than you earn, over 3 or 5 years with compounded interest in debt, that could be tens of thousands in debt. Okay, number 3 way that people fail big time and go broke is that they do not track what they spend. You cannot master what you do not measure. So are you budgeting? Do you know exactly what you spend, how much you spend, and where you spend it? And the answer is probably no, unless you're my business partner Mark Homer, and he tracks what I spend and he knows what I'm spending. Now, um, I did this pilot TV show. It's actually going to be, um, Channel 4 TV show, and I went up to Scotland and it was filmed in the Glasgow Town Hall, and I was one of the money mentors. And couples would come in and meet us and tell us about their money challenges, and then we would ask them to get all their financial affairs together, you know, bring in some credit card statements and bills, and to put a spreadsheet together of how much they were spending. And it was shocking, shocking, but all of the couples and the families, they way underestimated how much they spent, and they way underestimated their debt. So they were either delusional or they didn't know what they were spending. So you cannot master what you do not measure. So make sure you track what you spend, you track what you earn, you track your net worth. If you're a company, you need to track your profit and loss, your management accounts, your balance sheet, etc. By the way, if you're finding this content useful, please share it because I'm going to do another 3 tips. I'm doing a lot more money content now because the cost of living is going crazy. Inflation is like hitting double digits. Energy and food and fuel is through the roof. Do you know, pound for pound, your spending power is as low as it's been since the end of the Second World War? And this is why I'm doing a lot more content. I'm actually the author of Money, the UK's best-selling book in the last 5 years on money, and I have a podcast called Money. Um, I've got what, 200-odd episodes with billionaires and 100 millionaires. By the way, if you'd like access to my podcast, just type 'podcast' in the chat. I'll actually give you some other financial bonuses and resources, like 35 ways to save up to half your salary a year. I actually wrote an article for a mainstream UK publication, and I've expanded it out for you as a gift. Just write 'podcast' in the comments, and I'll send you a link to that. Also, how to build multiple streams of recurring income and digital assets. Um, so if you just write the word podcast, I'll send you a link. Pop your details in so we can stay in touch in case I get banned, because I've had a couple of videos, um, fact-checked by the gods of Facebook. Anyway, um, and I'm doing this content to help people with this cost of living crisis and this soaring cost of living. But podcast in the chat for a load of gifts from me for free. Cool. So, um, there's 6 ways that people, um, go broke and the money fails of the broke. Number 1, they get poor trying to look rich. Number 2, they spend more than they earn. Number 3, they don't track what they spend or have a budget. Number 4, they buy depreciating liabilities. So instead of buying appreciating assets that go up in capital and produce income, they buy depreciating liabilities that consume capital and cost outgoings. So are you buying assets— property, real estate, digital Assets, building a personal brand, sponsorships, advertisers. Do you have books and audiobooks? And or are you buying cars, liabilities, doodads, clothes, things that go down by a half or two-thirds in 1, 3, or 5 years? So turn depreciating liabilities into appreciating assets. This shit is not taught at school and it freaking well should be. If you agree it should be, hit the share button. And let's make a bit of a difference together. I wasn't taught about the difference between an asset and a liability at school. I wasn't taught about, you know, you cannot master what you do not measure around money. I wasn't taught pay yourself first. I wasn't taught never spend more than you earn. I wasn't taught that people go broke trying to look rich and that you can get rich by acting broke for a while. I was not taught any of this shit. By shit, I mean good shit. Okay, number 5, you never spend when you're emotional. Broke people spend when they're emotional. They're high, addicted, I'm going to spend frivolously. They're careless, they're carefree, or they're depressed and down, they spend nothing. They're hoard, they're too careful, or they spend to get rid of and alleviate the pain because they're in so much pain. So you need to balance your emotions and regulate them. Be neutral with your emotions. Never spend when you're overly high or overly low, you know, elated and depressed. This is, you know, one of the three laws of money flow is money flows from those who manage their emotions the worst to those who manage their emotions the best. Okay, which leads me to number 5, the emotional spending, and then number 6 is saving without investing. So one of the big misconceptions of money is that you should save money. Save money, you get rich saving money, that's what your parents taught you. You don't get rich saving money. You only save money as a bridge to build an investment pot. You get rich investing. You cannot get rich saving. You will only get rich investing. Inflation is 10%. Tell me where you can save money and get more than a 10% return in a savings account. You can't. You can't even get 1%. So I'm not saying you shouldn't save. Saving is a good behaviour to manage your disciplines and emotions around money. But what— the only reason you save is to then invest, and then investing protects it from inflation, has capital growth, and recurring income. So quick summary of the 6 Epic Fails of the Broke. Please hit the share button because let's help as many people in this cost of living crisis. Um, pound for pound, your money, your spending power is the lowest it's been since World War II, so you need these strategies and tactics. So number 1, people get poor trying to look rich. Number 2, they spend more than they earn. Number 3, they don't track what they spend, they don't have a budget. Number 4, they buy depreciating liabilities. Number 5, they spend when emotional. Number 6, they save without investing. If you do the opposite of those, if you act broke to get rich, if you always spend less than you earn, if you track everything you spend and you make, if you buy appreciating assets, if you spend when neutral and not emotionally, spend logically, and you invest once you've saved, you're going to get rich.
