Trump’s Truth Social App ‘a Disaster’ 😳

Donald Trump's Truth Social launched with a 1.4 million person waiting list, no Android app, and widespread technical failures. NYU's Joshua Tucker called the rollout a disaster. The speaker examines the tension between wanting to escape big tech and needing its platforms to do it.

Donald Trump's social media app Truth has been branded a disaster. When Donald Trump announced that he was launching a brand new social media app called Truth to disrupt big tech social media, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, it costs billions, probably, to launch a social media app going against the likes of Facebook and Twitter. This is a bold move. Some may deem this a stupid move. Uh, on the other hand, and also it's called Truth by Donald Trump, so there's some interesting social dilemmas there. On the other hand, I do think some big tech and social media platforms need to be disrupted. I do think that we need to move away from centralization and globalization and mainstream media, more towards decentralization, owning our own data, moving away from cancel culture, being deplatformed, platformed and being censored. And of course, whether you love Donald Trump or not, he faced the full force of big tech cancelling and deplatforming and censorship because he got banned by Twitter in 2021, and he got banned by Facebook. So this to me was going to be something really exciting to see play out. I was going to be setting up an account and trialing the Truth app and really excited to see if it might disrupt. So just recently, the Truth app, Donald Trump's social media app, has been branded a disaster because it initially pre-launched in October and it was told that it was going to be a March launch. We're now more than a month beyond that, and no one really knows what's going on. You can't use it on Android. You can't use it on your computer. There's a waiting list of 1.419631 million, and, uh, most people, it doesn't seem to work. They can't download the app. And there are issues. So Joshua Tucker, director of NYU's Center for Social Media and Politics, has branded it a disaster. So someone has asked me what's my point. Pretty obvious from the headline. Donald Trump's social media app called The Truth, which he said would disrupt big tech, at the moment has flopped. So he said, I created Truth Social. To stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. I, for one, was quite excited by that. Do you think Donald Trump should have been canceled and deplatformed and banned from Facebook and Twitter? Let me know what you think in the comments as to whether he should or shouldn't have been banned. Of course, um, they were— they claimed he was inciting violence, um, And so they banned him. But I am a believer in free speech. I'm a believer in you being able to be on social media without the fear of being canceled or deplatformed if you have a different rhetoric and narrative to mainstream media. And the problem right now is that mainstream media is trying to control us, cancel us, deplatform us, ban us, censor us. Even the channels I use and I enjoy, they are— you can't use the word COVID lockdown, vaccines, Putin, Russia without fear of being cancelled or deplatformed or demonetized. And I do not believe that this should be the case. So what do you think right now in this world of cancelling and deplatforming and Um, you know, what do you think is happening to our freedoms? Um, someone has just said here, you seem to be a bit of a moaner about it. Um, anyone doing anything about the big tech censorship has to be a good thing. I will kind of paradoxically, um, contradicted yourself there because I am using social media to get these messages out, to address these moral dilemmas. I mean, let's be honest, Donald Trump It's a moral dilemma because did he incite violence? Um, some would say he did. Was there a case for him to be banned or censored or deplatformed? Some would say they would. But also, if we allow mainstream media and Big Tech just to cancel and deplatform and shut us down and restrict us and shadow ban us and demonetize us at any minute, We have no control over our information and the freedom of information and information flow. How can we trust the voting system if social media are restricting certain political views? So I don't think this is a moan. I think this is a real-world situation that we are in. And I'm trying to use my social media platform to address these topical issues because I think they're really important. Because if you get banned from a social media platform for voicing your opinion or talking about topical issues, That's a problem for you, that's a problem for your business, that's a problem for your reach into revenue, your impact into income. Let me just read you the latest. So Donald Trump said that, "I created Truth Social to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American president has been silenced." Now, the app launched on President's Day, 21st of Feb. But now, what, 7 weeks later, a waiting list of 1.5 million are unable to use it, can't use it outside of America, can't use it on Android, can't use it on your laptop. Many people are struggling to download the app. Now, I kind of predicted this. Here's why. Because it costs billions, I would assume, to launch an app like Facebook, like Twitter, like YouTube, like TikTok, like Truth. And I wonder if Trump really was fully aware of how much money and how many bugs and how many new updates are going to be required. But it's so far been branded a failure. Now, I hope it's not a failure. I hope it comes in. I believe we should have decentralized social media whereby you own your own data and you have no fear of being canceled. And for us to have decentralized social media, big tech needs to be disrupted. Big tech needs to be held accountable. And if there are social media channels that allow you to have your own data and allow you full freedom of speech and they become successful and popular, The big tech social media channels will have to adapt and have to change, and I think they've had too much control for too long. But I understand the paradox in that I'm here on, um, a big tech platform talking to you all on a big tech platform, and big tech has been very good for us. TikTok and Instagram and YouTube and LinkedIn and Facebook, very good for us to reach a target audience if you're an entrepreneur, reach your family and friends if you want to be social. When we're in lockdown, of course, it's great to be able to connect with people online through social media, and it's free, so we can't really moan when they chuck a load of ads at us. So let me know what you think in the comments. Um, do you think that Trump will pull it round and launch Truth, and Truth will actually come out on Android and in the UK and other countries and on your laptop? Do you think they'll get over all these teething issues, or do you think Trump has bitten off a bit more than he can chew? What do you think of his social media app called Truth? Do you think there's some, um, irony in that? Um, do you— are you excited for the launch of Truth, or do you think it's just, you know, maybe another, um, a bit of noise from the ex-president? But let's see, let me know what you think. But, um, we are now 6, 7, 8 weeks since Truth was supposed to launch, and it looks like it's been branded— well, it's been branded a failure so far. Um, I hope that a mainstream big tech social media gets disrupted. I hope we move away from globalization and centralization to decentralization, where you own your own data to all the people following, where you can contact them, where you have the freedom of speech and you will not be canceled or shut down or deplatformed or restricted or demonetized. And this is going on left, right, and center because mainstream media is scared. Mainstream media is dying. Mainstream media viewing and popularity is going down and down and down. Mainstream influence is going down and down and down. You know, YouTubers and podcasters and creators, these are the people now changing the world and having this huge impact, like Joe Rogan and MrBeast and people like that. And I'm all for an individual having the freedom of speech and the freedom of reach. We must fight for this. If you agree with me, please hit the share button. Because, you know, some— a couple of you have said, oh, seem to be a bit of a moaner recently. Well, we have to fight for our rights. We have to fight for our freedom of speech. I used to think, well, don't say anything about it, Rob, just do business and entrepreneurial content, just be really happy and positive and tell everyone how they could be really successful and be positive and always, you know. Yeah, but when there's wars and when there's COVIDs and when there's lockdowns going on and when the cost of living is higher than it's ever been and taxes are higher than they've ever been and inflation is higher than it's ever been, and we've just come out of Brexit, which has seemed like a freaking disaster. We have to get real about this. We have to get real. We have to stand up and speak out. So let me know what you think about that. I'd love to discuss it with you in the comments. Please hit the share button. Remember, fear screams loudest when it's dying. Mainstream media is dying. Mainstream media is scared. This is why I was quite excited for Donald Trump to launch his Truth App, to disrupt mainstream social media and big tech, but it looks like it's had a false start. Let me know if you think you'd like to see Truth Go Big, or you just think, you know, it's just going to be another mouthpiece for Donald Trump. Let me know what you think. We must push back against mainstream media, um, and also use its positives, uh, and hold it accountable. Just like we need to keep our government to account, we need to keep our world leaders to account, we need to keep our big tech social media platforms to account as well. And also remember this— ready? If you don't risk anything, you risk everything. Hit that share button, let's have a chat in the comments, and I'll see you on the next video.
