Why Silver is Better Than Gold 😮

Rob Moore argues silver is underpriced relative to gold since the mid-1990s, driven by industrial demand from batteries and electric vehicles. He shows how to buy physical silver through Direct Bullion, discusses storage and VAT recovery, and frames it as an inflation hedge cheaper than gold.

Why silver is better than gold to invest as an asset. There's some weird things that have happened where gold and silver used to track quite closely in relative terms, and that's all changed. So I've got a load of silver here that I'll show you. So this is a kilo bar that I have here, and, um, you might be surprised. I don't know if you invest in silver. Let me know in the comments if you do. This is a 5-kilo bar. I can hardly hold the thing. Uh, and then we've got— I've got, I don't know, hundreds of silver coins. Let me show you here. Okay, so I have two mentors who help me price and buy silver and gold, and for 15 years I've been buying gold. I was buying gold at £700 an ounce. It's now nearly $2,000 an ounce. Um, this is a 1-ounce silver coin, so in gold this is now worth about $2,000. The reason I think that silver is probably a better investment now is because right up until, I don't know, the mid-'90s, something like that, gold and silver price was pegged and connected, so that as gold went up, silver went up pretty much at the same relative amount, and as gold went down, silver went down at the same relative amount. And then there was a de-pegging, a disconnection between the price of silver and gold. And what happened was, ever since the '90s, gold has gone like that. I mean, I don't know if you've seen the price of gold even since lockdown. Seems to be a new record high all the time, which is obviously great if you own a load of gold, but it's not so good if you want to buy at a good price, because generally it's good to buy low, sell high. Now, of course, gold could go higher. Bitcoin's high, it could go higher. Properties are at a record high, could go higher, but you could come in and buy gold and property at these record highs, and then you could mistime it and you could have a drop of 20, 30, or more percent. If you hold, you'll be fine, but the timing might not be right. But silver has not gone up in the same way. So as gold soared, silver's just— it has grown, don't get me wrong. That's why I bought— I mean, I bought with this recently. Um, there's 5, 10, 13. There's probably 25, 30— no, yeah, it's probably 25 or 30 kilos of silver here. But this is underpriced compared to gold by a huge factor. And the reason is, um, it's just not been as popular. Now, I don't know why it's not as popular. Maybe because it's heavy and it's harder to store, because a 5-kilo bar here is a few grand, whereas a 5-kilo bar of gold It's going to be millions of pounds. But silver actually has a lot more utility than gold. So even though there's more supply of silver, it's needed in every battery. And of course, electric cars are huge right now. Silver actually was the very first precious metal we used in currency. People think it was gold. It actually wasn't. It was silver. So it's more commonly used than gold. It's underpriced compared to gold. And so I actually think silver is better than gold for most people. Also, um, by the way, if you can guess how much— if you can guess how much this kilo bar cost me, um, I'll give it to you. Fuck it, why not? Let's have a bit of fun. If you can guess how much this silver bar cost me exactly, you need to get it, and I've got it written down, then you can have it. But the thing with silver coins like this is they're not that much money. Like, that's under 50 quid. So, um, you could ask for gifts for birthday, Christmas. You could give them as gifts anytime anyone buys you anything crap for Christmas or birthday. Just say, nah, I just want silver coins. You can buy silver coins really easily off the Royal Mint website or off Direct Bullion, and job done. You just collect them over time. They're obviously really easy to store. Matthew has said premiums are too high, um, so I buy my gold from Direct Bullion and they charge me spot price. Um, in fact, sometimes they charge me about 2 points under spot price. And anyone who buys through me, through Direct Bullion, because I have a partnership deal with them— I don't get paid any comms, but you get basically spot price. So if you go to robmoore.directbullion.com, make sure you go via me, robmoore.directbullion.com, you'll get this at spot price. Because you're right, you don't want to be paying the margins and the premiums on these. And if you buy them from the wrong place, you will. But, um, get— you can gift these to people, you can receive them as gifts, birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc. They're accessible because they're not as much money as gold. Most people, you know, maybe they haven't got a few grand to put into gold, but you can get into precious metals much more quickly with silver. You claim the VAT back if you buy them and own them in a company. So there's lots of benefits. So people don't really understand investing. They don't understand that this is much better than cash. Um, it's actually, depending on where you get it from, it's legal tender. Um, but the thing with cash is it goes down in value over time. So cash has gone down at 7% a year pretty much since lockdown, whereas this has dramatically gone up. Uh, so it beats inflation, which is the fundamental rule of investing, is you have to beat inflation. You can store it and hold it anywhere you want. You don't need to put it in a vault and pay for the, you know, the storage fees. And also, what's the point in buying all this and putting it in a vault when the banks own the vaults? The point of this is the banks don't own it, you own it. The point of this is it's real. The point of this is if there's a currency hyperinflation or this kind of war or revolution or whatever, then this is going to go up in value a lot. We might end up having to go back and using this as money. So these are all the reasons why gold might be a better bet than silver right now, but it's actually not a bet, it's an investment. And, um, you know, this is one of the reasons why I launched Rob.team back in the day. I mean, I launched Rob.team probably 10 years ago— no, 13 years ago— um, to, to give the world better financial education and knowledge, to help people start and scale their business, to help people invest.
