Work From Home is Career Suicide 😳

Rob Moore argues remote work is career suicide because it hides you from managers and kills your shot at promotions. He says once the job market shifts back to favoring employers, remote workers will be first to get cut. Some roles like coding can work remotely if you're self-disciplined.

Work from home is career suicide. A lot of people aren't going to like what I'm about to say, but I think it's about time for some real talk. All this work from home— let's do, oh, a 4-day week and get paid for 5. Let's work from home and walk the dog in the day, and oh, let's start our side hustle, all while my boss and employer pays for it for me. Because I am special. No, no. Now, of course, lockdowns required work from home, and if it weren't for work from home, there wouldn't be any work. So it was good for a time, but now we're out of lockdown. The economy isn't going to recover itself. You know, your money isn't magically just going to fall in your lap because you're used to working from home and now you don't want to do a proper day's work. So here's the thing. When there's prosperity, let's do a 4-day work week and get paid for 5, and let's be a bit more productive. When there's a lockdown, let's run our work and business from home because that's the only way we can do it. Yes, yes, good, good. Here's the thing. When the economy's screwed, when inflation is soaring, when cost of living is soaring, when there's a lot of uncertainty, when taxes are going up and up and up and up, there's some arrogance in the job market and arrogance with a lot of people who think they're entitled to work from home and do less and work the dog and start their side hustle and their boss pay for it. Not on my fucking watch, I'll tell you that. Now I'm going to share with you a load of things you will miss and why your career could be suicide if you work from home. Now, if you are one of those people, and there aren't many of them, but if you're one of those people that works better from home, you should be pissed off with a lot of people taking the piss and gaming the system. You can only game a system for so long. You can only pretend to work for so long. Your employer will find you out. And here's the thing, it's not just a culture within a workplace, it's a culture within a nation. Like our government are fucking around, having parties, not properly working us out of this. Wasting our money on stupid decisions. So there's this pandemic of laziness and entitlement, of position and authority and I deserve my rights. We need to wake the fuck up, otherwise this country's gonna go to shit and it's already going to shit. And it starts with work. Work. Like, you know, work. Now here's the thing, I might be a bit old school, I'm 43, but I was taught by mentors who were successful in the 1980s: always do more than you're paid to do. When you're going to do a job, do it well and put the cherry on the top and do a bit more. Like, when you get tips, you get tips for good service. You don't get tips for 80% service. Oh, I'll work 80% of my hours. You don't get tips for doing less, you get tips for doing more. So you get referrals for doing more. So you get more money for doing more. You get more business for doing more. Always go over and above. Do more than you're paid to do. Do the job you want, not just the job you've got. This was the shit I was taught in the 1980s and '90s and 2000s. No one's fucking teaching that now. Everyone's saying, oh, well, work from home, walk the dog, and have work-life balance, and take all your mental health issues to work, and, you know, get signed off for stress for months and have your employer pay for it, and, you know, blame your employer for everything, and start your side hustle and let your boss pay for it. That's all the shit that's going on. Now David has said, "Which employee pissed me off?" I'm actually not really talking about my organisation, because my organisation are mostly good. Though I don't mind talking about this, because if there is anyone in my organisation who wants to work from home and do half the work and get paid by me, fuck off. Go and work somewhere else. That's not the kind of culture that I want. I want a disruptive, dynamic, energetic, successful culture where we produce our way out of hardship and we make meaningful products and services. That make a difference. Now I'm not saying I want to work everyone 12 hours a day and burn them out, I'm not saying that either. We've got good employee benefits, they get extra holiday, we've got a lot of perks. No particular employee pissed me off, I'm pissed off with the whole culture in the country. I actually think most of it was caused by the freaking government anyway, they shouldn't have fucking locked us down for at least the second and third time. Anyway, let me share some reasons, right, rant over. By the way, I'm clearly biased, I've got 100 staff, so I'm clearly biased, but we're all biased, and I'm at least sharing you my bias. Now, I am also helping you because it's easy to get sucked into the culture because at the moment it's an employer's market— sorry, it's an employee's market, it's a candidate's market, which means the candidates have got a bit more power, they're being a bit more selective, it's difficult to find the staff, so they can be a bit more choosy. So right now they're like, 'Oh, it's all good for me, it's all good, I'll take what I can get, I'll take all my benefits, I'll take, take, take, take, take.' But here's the thing, in 1 to 2 years from now when it reverses, they'll be begging for jobs. And here's the thing, employers will have to pay more money and give more benefits and give more time off and all this stuff to draw in the talent. But as soon as things change back to a normal employees' market, the employer will go, right, all these people who took the piss out of me 2 years ago and are doing 80% of work, you can fuck off, you're gonna go, I'm getting rid of you. This is what's gonna happen. It's going to happen. I've seen it before, not like this in terms of lockdowns and all that shit. So I actually think I'm being kind with these warnings. I'm not just ranting because I'm pissed off, but I just think that it's really important to say this, and no one's fucking saying this, so I'm saying this. And hit the share button and make sure everyone knows about this. All right, so here's why work from home, I believe, could be— is career suicide. There's at least 9 different things here. Number 1 is If we're in prosperous times and the economy is booming, we can take our step back, we can have some benefits, we can relax a bit. Yes, that's what you do when things are going well, you relax a bit, and when things are going bad, you work a bit more. But right now it's not prosperity, it's the, it's the reverse of that. Massive inflation, massive soaring cost of living. We could be in a 10-year freaking depression, who knows. It's all going wrong, and the only way you get out of this Alive is work more, earn more, hustle more, produce more, create more, solve more, and serve more. And the world's fucking forgotten that. Wake up! Because we're all— oh, it's going to be really hard. Oh, the taxes. Oh, the inflation. Oh, all the shit that's going on in the world. Well, we have to work our way out of it. The government aren't going to save us. Okay, so reason number 1 is work ethic is required now. And by the way, your work ethic can't be seen when you're working from home. So actually, it's difficult for you even if you are working. You're not seen. Out of sight, out of mind. So the next thing is you can't learn by osmosis. Now, but the best way to learn is via osmosis, i.e., watching, seeing, listening, experiencing, and being in it. You can read books, you can go on courses, it's all good, but actually being in the office, the buzz, the hub— I see the hierarchy there, I see how that person talks to that person, that person's got a lot of knowledge, I'm gonna go and sit near them, I'm gonna have lunch with them— all the stuff you learn through osmosis, to develop your career, to move up that career path, which by the way can be expedited, sped up, if you know what's going on and you know the games to play. Not the— not gamification, not career politics, but actually you know what's going on. Okay, that person, there might be a role there in a year or two. That person looks unrest. That person's got loads of knowledge. They can sort of be a mentor of mine. You learn the best and the quickest through osmosis, and you have none of that working from home. None of that. The next thing is, if you want to find something out— 'Oi Dave, what's the password?'— you just go and ask them. Whereas you email Dave, 'What's the password?' 6 hours later, Dave can be arsed to check his emails, replies to you going, 'Don't know.' You reply back going, 'Who does?' 6 hours later, Dave goes, 'Finance.' And like, the speed just slows down, slows down. So that's something you can't get the speed when you, you work from home. Um, you'll be the first to let go if you work from home and you can't be seen and you're not— you've not got the values, the culture, the mission, the energy. You'll be the first to let go. You really will. Now Tanita is saying here, I successfully work from home. By the way, who's going to go on my live and say, yeah, I work from home and I fuck around and I take the piss and I do about half my work and I walk the dog? No one's actually going to admit that they don't work from home very well. So you have to be honest with yourself, and most people aren't. So everyone's going to say if they want to work from home, they work from home well. Now, some of you do, but it's a small minority, and those of you that do, you should be pissed off that everyone else is gaming the system and taking the piss because that makes it harder for you. Now, if you're a coder or you need singular focus and no noise, or you've got a technical— or you're like in IT or something, then actually In some instances, it is better to work from home. I actually do have some staff that work from home. I'd rather not, but their roles dictate that that would work that way. So a copywriter we've got, she's brilliant, she works from home, she lives nowhere near us, and she's brilliant. But like, writing copy is not easy in a noisy office, but she'd hear things being said in the office, oh, okay, that I could, I could weave that into the copy. Now, many people hate working from home. They're lonely, they're bored, they're lost. And here's the thing, you want it easy in terms of your emotions, but actually you should have it challenging because challenge is what will make you grow. So you need to be challenged. How will you spot the next career move from home? You won't. You can't feel the culture, the energy, the vibe, the buzz, you know, the interactions, the relationships. You can't get any of that working from home. You'll probably be distracted working from home. You'll become lazy, and the lazier you get, the harder it will be to work your way out to a good work ethic. Um, what about, you know, your ability to, um, get a pay rise? Well, you work from home, don't really know what's going on. Not in all instances, but in many instances it's going to be difficult to get a pay rise, I think, um, if you're working from home. I believe you actually have to earn the right to work from home, you know, something that you should earn, not just get given. Like, honestly, you know, some people are now coming in with interviews saying, I want X amount of holiday, I want to work from home, I want this, I want that. They're not going 'Who's your customer? I want to serve them.' 'Who's the employer who'll be paying me? I want to do a good job for them.' I mean, what the fuck has the world come to? You work to provide value, so give the value. Don't expect everything and not give the value. You work to provide value. Customers and businesses and companies exist to serve our clients, to give them value, to produce for them. Yet no one seems to give a fuck about that anymore. And by the way, as soon as the employment market changes and it's more of an employer's market or an equal market, you will be the first to go working working from home because you took the piss and you gamed the system, and you'll have it good for a year or two and then it will completely reverse. These are my thoughts on working from home and why I believe it could be career suicide. It's fine in lockdowns and prosperity, but right now work ethic and productivity is required, a bit more is required, whereas people want a bit less. People want to work 80% for 100% of the money. They should be wanting to work 120% so they can get their pay rise. You're moaning about inflation, you're moaning that wages aren't going up and, oh, I only got a 3% pay rise and inflation is 10% and blah, blah, blah. Well, you get a pay rise based on merit. If any one of my staff come to me and said, Rob, inflation is high, I want a pay rise, I'm like, I don't give a fuck. Why do I care to pay you more with inflation? Oh, Rob, I want to pay my mortgage. I don't care. And I say this nicely, I care about my good staff, but why would I pay someone more? If they do a better job, if they offer more value. You get paid more if you do a good job and you offer more value. And you either earn that and then you get paid more, or someone believes you're going to deliver that and then you get paid more. But no one wants to pay your mortgage for you or pay your inflation off for you. No, no one wants to. So what the fuck is the world coming to? Um, a bit of work ethic is required. You've got to be seen. You need to learn through osmosis being in, in the office. You need the energy, the culture, the speed, the Dynamism. And all of this cannot be experienced working from home. One caveat: if you want to be an entrepreneur, if you want to start a business or scale a business, if you want to actually make your own money and get out of the system, you have to learn to work from home. Because here's the thing, I work from home, but I earned the fucking right because I started my business 16 years ago. So Mark has said, I usually agree with you, but I actually get more done working from home 2 days. Mark, I did say that some people in certain roles do get more done working from home. I like the idea of working from home 1 or 2 days to do all your, you know, hardcore focus, working from homey type work, and then being in the office the other 3 or 4. That's a good solution if you can batch the time. And like I said, Mark, there are a few people who work well from home. You should be pissed off at all the other people that are taking the piss that are making it harder for you. They're my thoughts. But if you want to be an entrepreneur, you need to be self-managing, self-motivating. So you can't allow yourself to be distracted. You need to learn to be productive from home if you want to be an entrepreneur, and I'm an entrepreneur. So the one caveat is learn to be really good working from home, and actually, one, then you can be an entrepreneur, and two, actually, if you're bloody good at working from home, then you're actually gonna have a job for life, aren't you? Because, you know, right now people need employment, and of course if you work well from home, you can get a job 4 hours away, 'cause you're not driving there. So on the flip side, get fucking good at working from home. Here's how you get good at working from home, by the way. Answer your fucking emails quick and answer your WhatsApps quick. I have had some people in my organisation take 4 to 5 hours to check their WhatsApp or their email. What's the first thing I'm gonna think? You're just doing your own shit, which they were. So answer your emails and your WhatsApps really quick. Make sure you're always on call. Get more done. Get your reports in early. See how you can take on more work and, and help and be more productive. Stay in touch with the office even when you're working from home. Don't go AWOL for days, you know, or weeks. There are some tips on actually how you could work really well from home. I've got a couple of my staff in my office who work bloody well working from home, and good on them, and I'd hire 100 of them. It's just fucking rare. So actually, you know, Ranty Rob, he's given you a few tips here. But here's the thing, look, inflation, it's a killer right now. Wages have just gone down on average. It's a pretty doomy place. Like, if you want to earn the same you were last year, you probably need a 15% pay rise. Just to earn the same in terms of spending power. That's not good. And no employer is going to say, here's a 15% pay rise just because of inflation and reducing wages. No employer is going to say that. So if you want to negate all that and protect yourself, you need to start a business, and you need to learn well to work from home. I can work from anywhere. I work really well from home. I can work from anywhere, but I taught myself, and it's not easy, by the way, not easy at all. But if you'd like to learn how to start and scale a business get better financial education and knowledge, learn to work from home, learn to make your own money, learn to create recurring income, online income, work from home income, part-time side hustle income, join rob.team. Rob.team is my members area. It costs just the cost of a large coffee a month. That's it. You can cancel anytime. There's content going back 3 years. I've just sort of in the last 40 days relaunched it because of all the crazy shit that's going on in the world. I'm tripling down on the amount of content I'm putting in. There's masterclasses every week. I've got thousands of new members and 5,000 members. It's kind of exploding. So if you just open a new page right now and type in rob.team— do it right now, open a page like a new web browser, just type in rob.team. Go join now. It's the cost of a large coffee. You can cancel any time. It's virtually nothing to join. The 9-module, 10-hour How to Invest series went live last week, and a lot of the content I teach you is about starting a business, scaling a business, how to get better financial education and knowledge, how to work from home, work from anywhere in the world. Like this phone I'm doing a live on, I can run a $20 million a year business on that phone. We can run a £50 million portfolio on this phone. I can run 1.2 million followers and hundreds of thousands a month in social media revenue on this phone, on this here laptop. But man, it weren't easy, and I had to— it's completely different working from home. When you work in an office and you've got a manager and you've got people peering over you, you've got accountability, you've got reports, you've got deadlines. When you're working from home, you've got none of that. You have to create that yourself. You have to be self-managing, self-planning. I've got loads of Google Docs here on my laptop because I have to do all my own planning. I have to do all my own deadlining. Now look, I have assistants who help me with, you know, diary and stuff like that, but you've got to get good at planning, time management, you know, the work, the work you do now to make money versus the work you do in the future to grow. And you've got to manage all of this yourself and all the different tasks, and no one's going to do that for you when you're an entrepreneur. So if you want to learn how to work from home you want to learn how to start and scale a business, a side hustle, or actually be an entrepreneur, go and join Rob.team. Just open up a new window, type in Rob.team. Do it now, because people always say, yeah, I'm going to join Rob.team later. Mañana. Tomorrow never comes. Do it right now. Now let's observe the masses, do the opposite. Let's look at it from the other foot. If you get really good at working from home, from self-managing, if you get good at prioritising, you get good at ordering your tasks well, you're actually a valuable commodity that people will snap up right now because so many people are taking the piss because they want it easy. Or I'm going to be fair, it's been fucking hard in lockdown and actually a lot of people have lost their mojo, they've lost their drive, they've lost their direction. Lockdown, they were doing all right, but lockdown just kind of ruined everything for them. I get that too. A lot of mental health issues, a lot of issues with just being at home for so long. I get that, but no one's going to save you. You're going to have to pull out of that yourself. So I can teach you how to start an online business, a training business, your content into cash flow, your information into income. Because actually, when you get really good at working from home, it's great because you can work from home, a coffee shop, abroad. I have a driver and I just work in the back of the car, uh, You know, it's total freedom. Because actually the dream of working from home is a really good dream. It's total freedom. But the thing is, most people are taking the piss. And you don't want to take the piss. Because the thing is, you can get away with taking the piss for a while. Oh, this is great. I can walk my dog and start my side business and do 4 hours a day and, you know, fuck around. But that will last 6 months or a year. You can't hide that for very long. And when the employment market changes and the employers have a bit more power again and there's a bit more competition in the job market, the first people to go will be the piss-takers, the work-from-homers, the ones that out of sight, out of mind, were just doing just enough to keep their job. Like, surely the worst thing in life is to have a job you hate just not enough to leave, and you do just enough not to get fired. Surely that's the fucking worst way to live. I'm not living that life. And that's one of the reasons I started Rob.team. Started it 3 years ago. I've been running membership sites for 12 years. I've been running training businesses for 16 years. So I've got a lot of experience in this. But I launched Rob.team so you could safely, securely, cheaply, quickly become an entrepreneur, whether you want to do it 5 hours a week or you want to just completely go all in and run your own business. But here's the thing: you can't save your way out of this. You're not going to get a pay rise out of this because inflation is far too high and wages are now coming down. That was the news today, wages are down 2.2%. Inflation is over 10%. So you gotta get a 15% pay rise just to be the same as what you were last year? That's never gonna fucking happen. So actually turn this work from home thing on its head. Get bloody good at it, but do it for yourself. Or do it for an organisation as an intrapreneur and command a bloody good salary. 'Cause by the way, I would pay bloody— I was gonna say pay a bloody good ads person to work from home. If there were 4 bloody good ads people on this live who were good and who didn't take the piss and who work well from home, I'd hire them all today. I'd give them good salaries, they could work from home because that's a role that works well from home, you know, running ads and pay-per-click and stuff like that. I'd hire them all today. So actually there's massive demand for good quality work from home people. And there aren't many of them. And people are gaming the system and they think they're getting away with it, and they're not, and they'll get found out. So this is fair warning. Somebody said it's boring doing work alone. You need team, you need environment, you need energy, you need people, you need conversations. So let me know what you think in the comments. Do you think that work from home is really good? It's the evolved— the, the evolution of work culture. Work culture has changed for good. It's really good. To have a remote workforce. It means you can recruit nationally and globally. It means there's maybe more equal opportunities for people who couldn't get to the office, etc. There are some upsides. Tell me what you think. Do you disagree with me? But I have to warn people about out of sight, out of mind. You can't learn from osmosis. You can't get the energy, the culture, the career progression, see where your promotion's gonna be, see where the problems are that you can fix to earn more money, get your pay rises. You can't do any of that shit working from home. Anywhere near as well as you can working from the office. But the problem is, right, all these big companies, they're worried about their reputation and their PR. So, oh yeah, we'll do work from home and we'll do hybrid working and we embrace the new work culture and, you know, we're employee-focused. It's just fucking PR nonsense. Most of the people who run their companies are absolutely pulling their hair out that they just want some decent workers. Whatever happened to wanting a good career? And getting paid bloody good money for it. Now, like I said, if it was all rainbow, rainbows and sunshine and unicorns and life was great and the economy was booming, I'd be all game for this hybrid system. I'd be all game for taking the foot off the gas a bit and focusing on giving back and enjoying the moment for a little while. But when your back's against the wall globally, nationally, and, you know, for your own business and economy, and your employer is struggling, what's going on in the world? Anyway, if you know a bloody good ads person, a bloody good pay-per-click person, a bloody good copywriter, a bloody good media buyer— in fact, if you know anyone bloody good in marketing, tag them in, send them my way. And by the way, I do hire work remotely, but remember, I'll be fucking watching you, so don't piss-takers. Um, but yeah, let me know if you know anyone. Thanks for all the comments in the chat, by the way. It sounds like a lot of you like this video. No one's got the balls to say this, but I'll fuck it, I'll get cancelled 100 times, I'll just fucking say it. Um, and this attitude goes into our government. Oh, I'm in the public sector. Oh well, I just get paid. I'll just do it. I'll work from home through lockdown. In fact, I'll have a party every month in lockdown, and I'll work from home doing fuck all because it's all right because my money is guaranteed because I'm in the public sector. Where's the fucking work ethic in the public sector to turn our country around and fix our country and stop fucking doing it by taxing the arses off us all? All they do is tax up, tax up, tax up, tax up. Tax relief gone, tax relief gone. Loophole closed, loophole closed. Fuck off! Work! Whoo! Anyway, Rob Moore. As you can see, I'm a bit of an entrepreneur. I'm a hustler. I believe in work ethic. Here's the irony. I was writing about life leverage and I was writing about work-life balance and all of that and outsourcing before this whole work from home thing became popular and a thing. Because I do believe you should have balance, but I believe balance isn't about, 'Oh, I'm only going to work 3 hours a day.' Balance is about, 'Today I've got to do 9 fucking hours good quality work, and tomorrow I'll have the day off.' People get balance all wrong. Let me know what you think in the comments. If you disagree with me, let me know your thoughts and comments. I welcome disagreement. If you're one of the few that work well from home, you should be pissed off, and you should comment in here, and you should share this video, by the way. 'Cause those of you that work well from home are getting tarnished reputation by the piss-takers. And if you want to start a business, scale a business, if you want to be able to work really well from home, 'cause the irony of all of this is I work well from home. I actually work better from home than in the office, and I own the business. Because I've learned to self-manage, which most people don't know how to do. It's hard to self-manage when you've never self-managed. Like, if you want to start a business and you've gone from 50 hours a week working for someone else, who gives you deadlines and reports and, you know, bollocks you if you don't do what you're supposed to do. And if you're doing the wrong jobs, they guide you into the right ones, and they praise you if you're doing well. And you're basically mentored and guided and managed. Going from that to, hello, you've got 90 hours a week to bounce around your living room, and what are you going to do with it? It's difficult. And I had that 15 years ago, and it wasn't easy. So join rob.team, and I can teach you to work from home, can teach you to work on a few hours a week and start that business, get that income stream Learn, earn, invest. There's no way you're earning your way from, um, you know, you're not getting a 15% pay rise, probably just for inflation. So you've probably got to start a side hustle, or at least work well from home for your employer, or start another business, or create extra income streams. And Rob.team's going to do that. So open a new page, type in Rob.team. AM. Go and join, it's less than 5. You can cancel anytime. In fact, you can claim it as a business expense. Um, 9-module, 10-hour series on how to invest, 6-hour course on 21 ways to monetize social media, how to be a content creator, how to turn your information into income. That's what the Rob.team profile is, the platform, my private members area, is all about. You can cancel anytime. It's just literally the cost of a Large coffee, a large Starbucks coffee, it's the same price. There you go, no-brainer. What are you waiting for? Get off the fence. When you sit on the fence, it hurts your ass. What are you waiting for? There's no risk. You can cancel anytime. You can cancel tomorrow if you join today if you want. You can go and see what's in the platform. You can go and check out all the content. It's like going into a restaurant and saying, oh, let me lick all the food and see if I like it. You can go and lick all my content, lick it and nick it. I don't care because I know my content's good and I know when you get in that rabbit hole you wish you'd have started sooner. So open a new page, type in rob.team. I'll see you there. Let me know what you think about work from home. I'm not going to say the same thing over again. I normally do a summary, but I've ranted enough, so just go and watch the replay. Hit the share button because more people need to talk about this. I'll see you in rob.team. And remember, if you don't risk anything, you risk everything.
