WHAT EVERY PASTOR NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT HISTORY | TPUSA Faith

A sermon-style talk arguing that covenant-based, congregational church governance informed early American self-government and that Christians (especially pastors and church members) must actively engage in local politics to oppose moral evils. The speaker contrasts top-down monarchy and clergy-led models with Puritan covenantalism, criticizes pietist withdrawal, and urges civic action to protect children and religious freedom.
Foreign. Well, I like to see the big picture. And so do you know the most common form of government in world history, what the default setting is? It's gangs. And all a king is, is a glorified gang leader. And if you go back to the beginning, you got Nimrod, Tower of Babel, that was the first attempt at a One world government, by the way. Right. And so God confuses the languages, they scatter and the language groups turn into nations. Nations were God's invention to prevent a one world government. But each generation tries to conquer other nations. And you got Nimrods and pharaohs and Caesars and Kaisers and sultans and czars. And with the military advancements, kings can kill more people, and technological advancements, they can track more people. And clearly anybody that can plot can see that at some point it's going to max out on a global level. But you get to the Reformation and what the king believed, the kingdom has to believe. And so the reformation starts 15, 17. And then you have a king named Philip II of Spain, and he sends the Iron Duke of Alba to Antwerp, Holland, and he kills 10,000 Dutch Reformed Protestants. And then the Queen of France, Catherine de Medici, 1572, she has a wedding with her daughter Margaret with the main Protestant Huguenot leader named Henry of Navarre. A couple days after the wedding in Paris, she has her soldiers pull chains across the streets and the carriages cannot get out of town. And she sends her men house to house and they kill 30,000 Protestant leaders in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. And so you have a problem with Romans 13. Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. And so in the French speaking area, right, so, so what do you do if the governing authority wants to kill your wife and kids? So over in you have these guys named reformers and they protested and they got nicknamed Protestants, Protestants. And so one of them was reformer John Calvin. And he writes something like this, or this is what he wrote. We are subject to the men who rule over us, but subject only in the Lord. If they command anything against him, let us not pay the least regard. In other words, there's a scripture in the Bible, Ephesians 6, children obey your parents. But what if there's a bad parent that tells your kid to sell themselves into prostitution and kill the neighbor? Is the child supposed to obey that parent? No, the child obeys the parent as long as the parent's telling them to do something. That lines up with God's word, right? So you obey the government as long as the government is telling you to do something that lines up with God's word. Why would, why would God tell you to do something in his word and then tell you to submit to a government that tells you not to do what he just got done telling you to do? And this is the same as Martin Luther King Jr. S Letter from the Birmingham Jail, 1963. One may well ask, how can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others? The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws, just and unjust. One not only has a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. And so these Calvinist Puritans began to come up with how to have a government without a king. It is called a covenant form of government and it required that everybody agree to it and everybody participate and be involved in it. And it's a like a triangle. The covenant is you get blessings from God, you voluntarily share them with your neighbor because you're doing it as unto God, not socialism where the government takes away your stuff and redistributed it to supporters. Right. And so where did the Puritans get this idea? From the Bible, what part of the Bible? The first 400 years out of Egypt before King Saul it's called the Hebrew Republic. And the Puritan scholars that studied it were called Christian Hebraists, James Harrington, John Sadler, whose sister Ann Sadler married John Harvard. And so that's why they taught Hebrew at Harvard and Yale. And so the kings of Europe looked to the Bible for their authority, but they looked to the anointed King Saul. And all on the Calvinist Puritans that looked to the Bible for their authority they looked to the pre King Saul period, this Hebrew Republic, the first 400 years out of Egypt before King Saul, both of them look to the Bible. But King Saul is the divider between England and America. Right? The kings of England look to the Bible but they look to the anointed King Saul. And on Calvinist Puritans look to the Bible they look to this pre King Saul period, the first time in recorded human history where you had millions of people and no king. And it worked because every single citizen was taught the law and personally accountable to God to follow the law. And the people helped enforce the Law. There was no police force. And so this covenant form of government, Jesus says, upon this rock, I will build my church. As Lance mentioned, that word was ecclesiastical, means out of klesi, means a calling. They would call the people out of their homes to the agora marketplace, and the people would deliberate and get involved and make decisions as to how to get the navy stronger, how to fix the walls, how to teach the kids. And so he chose this word that it's the body of Christ. Everybody has to be a part, an eye and ear, a foot. And this was a congregational model. The idea is the pastor helps everyone to have their own relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ that died on the cross to pay for their sins, and then coaches them to become mature Christians. You get in the habit of reading the Bible every day, you get in the habit of praying every day, and then plug into the body and do something. Because everything that's alive takes in and gives out. For every muscle to grow, it needs to be exercised right? And so you don't just hear a sermon. You hear a sermon and get filled with the Holy Spirit, and then you put yourself in a position where there's a need and you let the Holy Spirit use you to meet the need. And so that's why I. I hated the COVID response so much. Right. So the king didn't like that. The king liked the hierarchical model of church government. It's called clergy lady. The clergy does all the ministry, and the lady is lazy and watches. And your relationship with God is through this hierarchical structure where you have the king, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of York, and the deaneries and victors and curates and rectors and priests. So the COVID response, what did they tell us? Well, just go home and watch a good sermon on a screen. And as good as the sermon is, you're taking in, but you are not giving out. What are you going to witness to? Your pillow? No, you. You take in, and then you let the Holy Spirit use you to meet the need. And as you do it, you this faithful in the very little is entrusted more you grow and become a mature Christian. And so King James did not like that. And he said, I will make them conform themselves or else I will harry them out of the land. We have a mandate from the government, right? And so these Calvinists had a group that branched away. They were called separatists and they were the Baptists. And. And one of the groups branched away, and that was John Robinson's church, and he went to the Netherlands after 12 years. Spain threatened to attack. They decided to go to Cape Cod. Actually they were going to go to Jamestown and they got blown off course to Cape Cod and they tried sailing south. But off the coast of Cape Cod it's really shallow. 3,000 ships have sunk off the coast of Cape Cod. It's called the graveyard of ships. And so the captain of the Mayflower said it's too dangerous to do any more sailing. Everybody off the boat. And the people on the boat say, we have a problem. There's no king appointed person in our little group. And who's going to tell us what to do? There's 102 of us. What did they do? They gave themselves the authority to start a government. It's called the Mayflower Compact. It says we in the presence of God what covenant ourselves together into a civil body politician. They took their congregational covenant form of church government and they made it their civil body politic government. Right. Are you catching that? Church group becomes a political group. And so it's a polarity change in the flow of power on planet Earth. Instead of top down rule by kings, it's bottom up rule by we. It's the difference between a dead pyramid top down and a living tree bottom up. Where every root and every tiny capillary root sucks in nutrients to keep the thing alive. It's the difference between divine rod of kings, do what I say because I'm appointed by God and or else I got an army and I'll kill you or we the people. So pastor of the Pilgrims James Robinson said, we are knit together as a body in covenant of the Lord. Tithe to care for each other's good. Puritan leader John Winthrop. This love among Christians is a real thing necessary to the body of Christ. We ought to account ourselves knit together by this bond of love. We must make one another's covenant condition our own. Rejoice together, mourn together, labor suffer together. We shall find that the God of Israel is among us. They took the church government, right? And it's this idea that we don't just pray together. We covenant together. Oz Guinness wrote covenantal ideas in England were the lost cause, but they became the winning cause in New England. Covenant shaped constitutionalism. The American Constitution is a nationalized, secularized form of government. Covenant. Covenant lies behind constitution. And the word federal is Latin for covenant. We have a covenant form of government where we can rule ourselves without a king. And then the king turns up the heat. And you have the great Puritan migration and you have pastors and churches, founding cities and pastor John Lothrop founds Barnstable, Massachusetts. Roger Williams founds Providence, Rhode island and the First Baptist Church. Rev. John Wheelwright Founds Exeter, N.H. thomas Hooker Founds Hartford. And so this is unique. Pastors and churches founding cities and coming up with the laws for the cities. So Thomas Hooker's church members say, can you preach a sermon on how we're supposed to set up our government? So Reverend Thomas Hooker gives a sermon in 1638 titled, the foundation of authority is laid in the free consent of the people. This is reflected in our declaration, government from the consent of the governed. And this is different from Europe, because kings did not ask the people for their consent. His sermon goes on, the privilege of election belongs to the people. This is right reflected in our Constitution, we the people. And his sermon is written down. It becomes the constitution for Connecticut. From 1639 up until 1818, Connecticut is using Pastor Thomas Hooker's sermon as its constitution. And so you have, here's a plaque in England, Thomas Hooker, founder of the state of Connecticut, father of American democracy. Another plaque. Thomas Hooker, Puritan clergyman, reputed father of American democracy. A statue of Thomas Hooker holding a Bible on the capitol grounds in Hartford at the base, leading his people through the wilderness, he founded Hartford. On this side, he preached the sermon which inspired the fundamental orders. It was the first written constitution that created a government. Another plaque. To hear minister Thomas Hooker, a peerless leader in New England, thought in life in both church and state. Another plaque. Thomas Hooker, preacher, statesman, who based all civil authority on the free consent of the people. They chiseled it in stone. This is unique in 6,000 years recorded history. Instead of top down rule by kings, it's bottom up ruled by us. And they took the church form of government and made it their community form of government. Another plaque. Thomas Hooker preached his famous sermon. The foundation of authorities laid in the free consent of the people. And then representatives of the people adopt his sermon as the fundamental orders. What do they say? The people could join ourselves to be as one public state or commonwealth. Who's the people? The church members. Church members forming itself into a public state. Why did they do that? To preserve the liberty and purity of the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Another plaque. Thomas Hooker's congregation established the form of government upon which the present constitution of the United States is modeled. Do you grasp the significance of this? America started as a church plan, church government. Everybody's involved. There's no bishop, there's no king. The government, everybody's involved. And so in New England, instead of separation of church and State. It was the pastors and their churches that created the state. How could you say pastor don't preach on politics when it's the pastor's sermon? That's their constitution. How could you say church members don't get involved in politics when all there was in Hartford was the church members? The word polis means city. Politics is the business of the city. In Hartford, all there was in the city was the church. They had one building called the meeting house. That's where the pastor would teach the Bible, and that's where they would gather together and do their city business. The word synagogue means meeting house. That's where the rabbi would teach the law, and that's where they would gather to do their city business. Why build a separate building just to talk about a different topic? And so the revolution starts. The British send over a military governor, Thomas Gage, and he outlaws meeting houses. Democracy too prevalent in America. We don't need people meeting and giving their consent. You just obey government mandates, you're a zombie. When the government says it, you jump. And so this is the 1600s. They're called old lights. They got a great plan. It's a covenant plan. We can rule ourselves without a king. Everybody has to be involved. After a century, it got a little dry. And David Brainerd got expelled from Yale because he said his professor was as spiritual as a chair. And some of them said, it's got. It's so planned out that don't God already planned who's going to heaven and hell, so don't even evangelize him. And then in the 1700s, you have the new lights. And the new lights say, no, it's more than a plan. You have to have an experience with Jesus. And when you do, you're not going to be involved. What? Let's look at this. So 1517, Martin Luther starts to Reformation. He had a personal experience. The just shall live by faith. But some German princes want to break from Rome, and they say, this is my chance kingdom of mine. I just decided everybody's Lutheran. And the people say, okay, we're Lutheran. What do we believe? So for the people in the kingdom, it's not the same personal experience Martin Luther had. It's just a new state doctrine. So a revival movement starts called pietism. That said, being a Christian is more than doctrine. You have to have an experience with Jesus. And when you do, your life will change and you won't do worldly things you used to do, like go to bars and brothels and lewd theater and get involved in government. Wait, what was that last thing? Yeah, government. It's filled full of worldly people. If you're really a Christian you will withdraw. You will not be involved, you'll be set apart. This is where that idea came from that I'm a little holier than you are because I'm not involved. We just preach the gospel at our church, we don't get involved. Right. This is where that came from. It did not come from the Calvinist puritans because in their covenant model everybody had to be involved. These were the pietists and so it turned into Germany. The two kingdom concept, kingdom of the government, kingdom of the church. The two don't touch. There were German princes that donated money to the pietists so they would teach their people not to get involved in the prince's business. Four centuries of that teaching allowed Hitler to put Jews on train cars. Go past the church, they're crying out for help. And the church's response was that's the government doing that and we're the church and we can't get involved in government stuff. So let's just sing praise songs. Louder. Can anybody see there's something wrong with that? And so the 1600s old lights. Calvinist Puritans. Good. A plan. We can rule ourselves without a king. Bad. It became so plan focused it was only a plan and it became spiritually dry. 1700s new lights. Good. You're going to have a personal relationship with Jesus. Bad. It's so personal, it's only personal and you withdraw. Now the they did emphasize a personal relationship which did spark revivals like the Great Awakening revival. But why can't it be both? Yes, it's a covenant plan and yes it's a personal experience. It is a personal experience with Jesus. But you want to be involved so your kids can have a chance to have a personal experience with Jesus. Because if you don't get involved, the agenda they're pushing is an anti Christian gospel. So the most important thing is to bring people to Christ. The second most important thing is to preserve the freedom to do the most important thing. Now to those that think it's holier not to be involved, what do you do with numbers? Chapter 30. It's the silence equals consent chapter in the Bible. A half a dozen scenarios. 1. If a daughter is binds herself with a vow while living in her father's house in her youth and her father hears her vow and holds his peace, then all her vows shall stand. But if the father overrules her on the day he hears, then none of her Vows shall stand, and the Lord will release her. That's come down to us as vows in a wedding ceremony. And the pastor tells the church members, when you hear these vows, if you are silent, you are giving consent to the vows. Speak now, forever hold your peace. It's called the rule of tacit admission. T A C I, T in Black's Law dictionary. An admission reasonably inferable from a party's failure to act or speak. And so it's in Our Constitution, Article 1, Section 7. Congress passes a bill, puts it on the President's desk. If he doesn't return it within 10 days and just ignores it and he's silent, the same shall be a law. In like manner as if he had signed it, his silence is the same as him signing it. So if a church member silence gives consent to wedding vows, it gives consent to other things. And if they're killing babies in the community and the church members are silent, they're giving consent to killing babies. If you give consent to sin, you share in the guilt of the sin as an accessory. And and you'll share in the judgment. Leviticus 20. Any Israelite or foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molech is to be put to death. If the members of the community close their eyes. When that man sacrifices one of his children to Molech, I myself will set my face against him and his family and will cut them off from their people together. All you have to do is close your eyes while they kill the kid and you're guilty. So here we have enough. Pastors in California protested when they wanted to kill a baby 28 days after birth. Acts 22. Paul's talking to the Lord, and when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to his death. Paul did not throw a stone. He didn't say a word. But he knew he was guilty by his silence for the death of Stephen. Proverbs 20:4. Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death. Don't stand back and let them die. Don't disclaim responsibility by saying you didn't know about it. For God, who knows all hearts, knows yours. He knows you knew. He. He will repay everyone according to his deeds. Esther Mordecai says there's a mandate from the government to kill the Jews. If you remain silent at this time, deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. Numbers 20. Moses and Aaron are called to the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord spake to Moses, take the rod, gather the assembly. Thou and Aaron speak to the rock, and it shall give forth water. And Moses gathers the assembly, lifts up his hands, and with his rod he smoked the rock twice and water came out abundantly. End of the chapter. And the Lord spake to Moses, aaron will not enter the land. Because both of you rebelled against me at the waters of Meribah. It's like both. Aaron didn't do anything. He didn't say anything. Yeah, that's just it. He heard God tell Moses speak to the rock. There's only two people at the door of the tabernacle, Moses and Aaron. So he heard God tell Moses speak to the rock. When Moses lifted up the rod the first time and hit the rock, it probably took Aaron by surprise. When Moses lifted up the rod the second time, Aaron knew what was coming. And he did not protest. He didn't say, well, Moses, hold it. I was there. I heard God's. No. He was silent. And in that instant, Aaron was guilty. Moses's was a sin of commission. Aaron's was a sin of omission. Leviticus 5:1. If a person sins because he did not speak up, even though he was an eyewitness to a case or knew what happened, anyone who failed to testify is guilty. Martin Luther King Jr. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetuate it. He who accepts evil without protesting it is in reality cooperating with it. Now, we all know the verse. Leviticus 19:18. Love your neighbor as yourself. Do you know the verse right before it? Confront your neighbor directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin. So they're loving each other and they're confronting each other. They tell you, oh, if your child's going through transition, just love them, just accept them. Just love. No, you love your child and you correct your child, right? You are the adult. You don't. If you let them eat whatever they want, they eat candy all day long. You're the adult. You're the. Leviticus 19. Another translation says, rebuke your neighbor died directly, so you will not incur guilt because of him. In the New Testament, if your brother sin, rebuke him. We've sort of left out part of the Gospel. You know, they have a. A woke tactic. Tactic. It's to guilt trip Christians into being more Christian than Christ. They say, if you're really Christian, you will be silent and tolerate us teaching your kids something that Jesus would never teach. I mean, would Jesus teach the trans agenda that you could be a fuzzy and every day different. Jesus taught he who made them at the beginning made them male and female. These precious little children made in the image of God. So woke tells Christians, you must be silent while we teach children something that Jesus would never teach. So in other words, if you're really Christian, you won't act like Christ. Yet Jesus says, if you cause one of these little ones who trust in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone around your neck. I mean, how can teachers who cannot even define what a woman is be capable of telling a boy he's supposed to be a girl? So it will be a rude awakening for church members who think they are being spiritual by not being involved. When they realize by their silence they're giving consent to sin, they're inviting the judgment of God upon their heads. Now, spiritual case can be made that God cares about the children and what's being taught to the children. Proverbs 20:13, 22. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children. The answer is local, local, local. And if churches can care about children in and out of the womb and what's being taught to their in the local schools, all the higher races will take care of themselves. I ran for Congress three times, raised millions of dollars. You tell that to most people, like, check that off my list. I'll never do it. But I say, wait a second. You drive by that school every day and if you know they're teaching the trans agenda and you know it's different than what Jesus taught, and if you're silent, you're giving consent to that. More people are in the churches in a community than vote in a school board election. If we can just pick some mama bear and say, look, let's all get behind her, let's lay aside our differences and we can begin to turn this thing around. And then once they get elected, pack that school board meeting early. As power concentrates into fewer and fewer hands globally, God's counterbalance is to get more and more people involved locally. Now maybe God is letting the evil expose itself to expose the condition of our hearts. I mean, how much will we stomach? How much will we put up with? What will it take to get us to respond? I mean, if we can remain silent, doing nothing, just waiting for Jesus to come back is to take us out of this mess, then our silence. We're giving consent to the sins of the city. I mean, who do you think you're going to meet? When you're raptured, right? Jesus Christ, do you think he cares about the little children? Jesus warned in the last days, because evil shall abound, the love of many will wax cold. You know Ezekiel 9, he cried, cause them that have to charge over the city to draw near. Behold, six men came, every man with a destroying weapon in his hand. And he clothed the man the man called the man with the linen and the writer's in corner aside and said to him, go through the midst of the city. Put a mark on the foreheads of all those who sigh and cry of the at the abominations done within it. To the others he said, go after him through the city. Slay old and young, but do not come near anyone who has the mark. And begin at my sanctuary. Does your heart sigh and cry over the abominations in your city? You know, Kim Walker Smith does a version of this Hosanna song. Beautiful. There's a choir of little children in the background, but the refrain says, break my heart for what breaks yours? Everything I am for your kingdom's cause. Do you think it breaks Jesus's heart to have these little kids be abused the way they are? And then Jim Caviezel comes out with this movie. America is like the destination for sex trafficking. And some say, well, I'm not doing anything, but God knows my heart. Yeah, he knew Abraham's heart, but he wanted to see Abraham be willing to take his son Isaac to the top of Mount Moriah. It's like a guy watching football and say, hey, when was the last time you told your wife you love her? He's like, I can't remember, but she knows my heart. It's like, when was the last time you did anything to show your wife you love her? It's like, I can't remember, but she knows my heart. It's like, dude, we need to have a little talk. People say, God knows my heart. Yes, he does. And he wants to see some actions, he wants to hear some words out of your mouth. He wants you to show on the outside what you believe on the inside. So we're the bride of Christ. And every romance novel builds up to a decision making moment of forsaking of all others and choosing the one. I think God is pushing the world to a decision making moment. And some people are going to choose the all others. They're going to be liked and friended and followed so much that they're going to deny Christ. And others are going to say, well, you don't want to sell divide some Stuff goes to the right and some stuff goes to the left. There are those that are doing evil and there are those that are silent in the face of the evil. And by their silence they're giving consent to evil. And there are others that say, you know what? I tolerated something I didn't feel good about and then I stretched the rubber band and tolerated something else I didn't feel good. But I'm sorry, I can't go with hysterectomies on 8 year old girls because they went through a tomboy phase. I can't go with castrating a little boy because they played with the sister styles. And you cut the rubber band and you get more excited about Jesus than ever before. And there's a decision, there's a dividing that takes place. God is pushing the world to this deciding moment. And then someday you're going to be dead and you're going to be in heaven and you're going to meet Moses and Gideon and David and they're going to tell you all of their stories about standing up to corrupt leaders. When Jesus says, who do men say that I am? We'll say, some say you're Elijah, some say you're John the Baptist. And some say you're John the Baptist, Elijah and Jeremiah, well, who is John the Baptist? He stood up to the corrupt king Herod. Who is Elijah, stood up to the corrupt king Ahab. Who is Jeremiah. He stood up to the corrupt king of Zedekiah. If we're going to be like Jesus, we can expect, you know, Peter denied Christ after the resurrection. He's filled with the Holy Spirit and he stands up to the Sanhedrin. I think maybe one of the evidences of being being filled with the Holy Spirit is standing up to corrupt government. Anyway, so when you're in, you're. When you're in heaven and you meet Moses and Gideon and David and maybe Moses won't invite you over to his place. I don't know what it's like up there. Maybe Moses will have a big place after all the small talks over, you say, moses, tell us the story room will get quiet. He'll stand up and say, I was 80 years old, it looked horrible. The Pharaoh was coming in at us. And I just stood and I said, God, use me. And the waves came in and swallowed up Pharaoh. And then you can see David tell us your story. And he'll stand up and say, well this Goliath. And I threw the rock and he took his sword and chopped his head off. And they're all going to tell their stories and everyone in the room's going to look at you, say, tell us your story. What was going on on earth when it was your turn to be down there? What'd they say about God in your country? But the baby in the Lord, the mother's womb, marriage, that God instituted you. What did you do when the whole world was against you? I'd hate for Jesus to walk in the room and a big screen come down and him show all kinds of miracles and people coming to the Lord and some this is what I planned for you to do, but you just didn't have enough faith and courage. And you look back at your life and that mountain that held you back was a little anthill. And you say, I let that little. I let that fear of man hold me back from doing all this great stuff. Guess what? We still are on this earth. You still have breath in your lungs. You still have feet, the tr. The soil. You still can do those things you'll be known for forever. God bless you.
