Another Unpacking Puzzle Piece (Getting to Okay to be Indigenous!)

A short YouTube vlog by Sandi L Boucher (May 31, 2023) in which she reflects on unpacking lifelong habits around food that originated in childhood scarcity. She describes how that habit led to avoiding trying new foods and her strategy to change it (trying new things/taking herself out to dinner), but realizes she is not a "foodie" and is comfortable treating food as fuel. She frames this self-acceptance as part of a larger process of Indigenous people learning it is okay to be different in a non-Indigenous world. The piece references a blog post called "Another Puzzle Piece," mentions supportive community reactions, and ends with a subscribe/share call-to-action.

Foreign. Hello, everybody, it's Sandy Boucher here once again. I'm Red Thunderbolt, woman of the Loon clan, a proud member of Seine River First Nation in Treaty 3 Territory in Northern Ontario. And I'm here with the why video for Wednesday, May 31. And I told you I had some revelations this week. If you watch the preview video for the week, this was one of them. So if you've been following my blog posts for the last little while, you saw me share how I had to unpack, about the food I eat and unpacking, that habit I got into when I was a child with mom being willing to buy us whatever food we wanted as long as we made sure to eat it because money was tight. And how that translated for me into an aversion to try new things because I didn't want to waste the money or I didn't want to offend someone by not liking it. And it just became a thing. It became a thing that I was like in my 40s till I tried to peach. Like, I mean, that's how big of a thing it got. And I shared. It was about a week ago that I shared how I'm unpacking that now. And what I realize I have to do is one try new thing and to take myself out for dinner. And if I'm wasting money, it's my money to waste and I gotta unpack that. And that way I don't need to worry about, you know, my meal partner being offended that, you know, they're not paying for the meal and they don't need to get upset if I don't like something because I'm by myself. So that was my plan. But today's blog post is called Another Puzzle Piece. And as that went out and I interacted with people on the blog post that had some pretty amazing friends promise me they're taking me out to dinner because they're going to help me get past this, which I thought was phenomenal. I realized, you know what? I am so not a foodie. Never mind the fact that I hate cooking. I'm one of those people that has a kitchen because it came with the home. I've always looked at food as fuel. It's what I need to put in my body so I can do the things I love doing. Like this working with you. I am not that person that's just gonna sit there and savor a meal. Sure, I enjoy a great tasting meal and I definitely have my favorites, but it's not what some people make it out to be. And those people that are totally foodies and into it are all the power to you. That's my point. I'm not. And that's okay. I don't need to be changed. I don't need to become a foodie. I don't need to have tried all these different things. It's totally okay for me to be me and it's totally okay for you to be you. And that may seem like no big deal except when you're indigenous in a non indigenous world. Getting to the point where it's okay to be different, that it's okay to not do what mainstream does, is huge. Huge. So I kind of laughed when that came to me. It's like, you know why? Because I did have people wanting me, you know, well, I'll teach you how to cook something I don't want to learn. It is not an interest for me. And that's totally okay. If it's an interest to you, all.
The power to you.
Please don't start sharing your stories because again, indigenous centered space. Just appreciate it and appreciate that what's different about you, it's totally okay. You are not a mistake. You are who you are. If there's healing involved, different story. But if you just love the way you are and you're not doing it out of trauma and triggering, just enjoy who you are. Doesn't that make sense? We're gonna finish off the week with some big revelations. So I hope to see you tomorrow. Don't forget to share this video. Subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don't miss any of these behind the scene talks because I love walking with you and that's how we're gonna get to reconciliation. Until tomorrow. I love you. Take care. Bye. Bye.
