This is a video seminar by Sandi L. Boucher (Anishinaabe speaker) focused on personal empowerment rooted in Anishinaabe teachings. In this chunk the speaker introduces herself (Red Thunderbolt, Loon clan, Saint River First Nation, Treaty 3 territory) and frames the session around applying the "garbage in, garbage out" idea from computing/accounting to life and mental input.
Hello, you amazing person, you. Mishko poggan on kwei nadishnikas mando dem. My name is Sandy Bouget. I'm Red Thunderbolt, woman of the Loon clan, a proud member. I have a hair in my face.
A proud member of Saint River First.
Nation in Treaty 3 territory in Northern Ontario. And we are in week three of a day that changed everything. The video seminar that's been based on my first live seminar that is a hundred percent focused on your empowerment rooted in Anishinaabe teachings. We have covered so much stuff, but today, I don't know if this is your first time here. I don't know if you checked out the other videos. I don't know what your career is or if you have one. But for people in the accounting bookkeeping field, you might have heard the phrase garbage in, garbage out. But just like with the video game analogy, that saying applies to life too. Let's talk about it.
We're on video 13 today. Video 13. Can you believe that? Again? And I know I said this a few times and I definitely said it in the last video. Kudos to you. This determination, this commitment that you're showing, this dedication to your lifelong learning is exactly what's going to get you the dreams that you're just dreaming of now. So I had to say that. Kudos. Absolutely kudos. Now again, through all of these videos, we've been talking about the Mecca life strategy. And this is the strategy that I live my life, life by every single day. Now, for me, it's automatic. Now I don't even think about that. And that's where I would love you to end up once you get in the habit of putting these, these rules, these principles, these guidelines into practice. So first off, we talked about M mental awareness and that's actually really. We're going to go back to that in the next video. It is so incredibly essential to not only be aware of what you're saying to yourself in your head, but to make sure that that's a positive message. Now, I have no doubt in my mind that there's viewers out there, maybe even you, who are watching this. Your mental little voice in your head has been saying nasty things to you and you don't know how to stop it. And I want to reass you right now. That is actually the subject of the next video. So I'm not going to leave you just to figure that out on your own. I'm actually going to share that with you. So that was the m mental awareness really honing in on what's going on and what we're saying to ourselves. I can tell you honestly, and I say this with no shame or guilt, I believe I mentioned I'm a 10 year domestic abuse survivor. I know exactly what it's like to share a home with someone who reminds you on a regular basis how little worth you have. And the truth is that abuse went on long after I left the relationship because I had the little voice in my head now saying those things. And worse, I got past it. My little voice doesn't say things like that anymore. So in the next video we will cover that. I'm not going to leave you hanging. You're not going through this alone. The E was environmental awareness. And that's another thing that's huge. If there's one thing I absolutely love, I can say now without doubt that everyone that's in my inner circle is a positive, supportive, driven, determined, and no surprise, successful individual. And I didn't pick them because of their success. I picked them because of their positivity. I picked them because they were the kind of person I wanted to become. And they, the messages they share with me constantly reinforce me. I always say they're the ones that remind me I can do it on the days that I forget. Now, does that mean I want you to go abandon your friends? Absolutely not. But you add in a positive one and then another and then another and suddenly you're hanging with people that support you. And that is not a negative. I have people I love and care for, family that are more on the negative side of the fence. And I still love them and I still go see them, but I don't spend tons of time there because I know what it'll do to me and to the odds of me achieving my dreams. I'm not going to hand over my future to people that don't support me so I can love them. I'm just not going to sacrifice myself for it. And I hope that makes sense. Then we looked at control, we looked at editing your life and realizing we can unpack that suitcase and get rid of the stuff that hurts us. We don't need to hang on to that. My mom was the first to say, take the lessons, leave the rest. Take the example from your past, leave the rest. Otherwise the suitcase just gets too heavy and you have no room to add the new great stuff. And then of course, I shared with you the video game analogy, which I hope you've been practicing. I love it when I am tempted to just sit on my tush and not do anything and not work towards my dream. I remind myself, that's not video game analogy. You don't win anything by sitting there. In fact, if you just sit there, the bad guys are going to get you. So I live my life in line with, with the video game analogy. And then we looked at Master Detective. Wasn't that amazing? That took us into the action stage of Mecca. And truly, like I said then, and I'm going to say it again, if you change nothing, nothing's going to change. So I'm not talking about changing other people. This is within your control. So video game analogy and the Master Detective showed us that we can take positive action. And that's where I'm going again today. I'm going to introduce you to another phrase and I have another exercise for you. So the phrase is garbage in, garbage out. I was first introduced to that phrase by an accountant years ago, probably a good 20 years ago now. And she was actually talking about the accounting program. Now, if you're not in business, you may not understand what that means, but the same thing as a budget, right? You put in the information and then it generates a report. Well, her point was if you just type in a whole bunch of garbage, that's what it's going to spit out. The reports aren't going to be worth the paper they're printed on. It's just not going to be facts that you can bet on. All the years that I've been around in whatever field, and especially as a motivational speaker, I have seen firsthand that what we take in as human beings is exactly what we give back out. I can meet a participant and in the first five, 10 minutes, I can tell if they hang around with positive or negative people. I can tell if they hang around with judgmental people. I can tell if they hang around with people that are locked in a victim status, not because they tell me, but because of how they phrase things. If you're constantly spitting out negativity, I'd be willing to bet all of your friends do the same. We become like the people we most hang around with. And that's why it is so important to choose your inner circle. So today's exercise is all about that. Choosing carefully your influences. Garbage in, garbage out. We have to be knowledgeable and aware of what we're taking in, so we can decide and choose what we want to put out and add to the world. We can choose to be part of the problem. In that case, you probably wouldn't have signed up for this course or you can choose to be part of the solution. And I'd be willing to bet that's the side of the coin you're on. Now you have two choices. Now. You can either go get your pen and paper like you always do, or you can actually download the worksheet that came in the email with this video. The questions I'm going to ask, the scenarios we're going to talk about are on that worksheet. There's actually six in total that we used to do at the live events. Three of them we're going to review in this video. And the other three I'm going to let you do on your own so that you can, well, either on your own or with someone in your home, someone you care about. I mean, you can easily do it over the phone, whatever the case may be. So we're going to pause the video like always, go get your drink of water, go get your coffee, if that's what your heart needs. And in a second come back and either have again a blank piece of paper and a pen or the worksheet downloaded so you can fill in your answers on that. I'll see you in a few moments. Hello again and welcome back to a day that Changed everything. So this exercise is fairly easy, fairly easy to understand. What I want you to do is consider how it would affect you if this scenario happened. So to explain the first one, we might as well jump right into this. And once again, I have my handy dandy index cards. How would it affect you if you watch the news all day, every day for a straight month? So again, how would it affect you if you watch the news all day, every day for a straight month? Now, I'd be willing to bet some things have come to mind, especially if you're watching this in the time period of COVID 19 pandemic and self isolation, because I think a lot of us have learned this lesson firsthand. Now most of the time when I did this at live events, the first thing that people would say is, oh my God, you would be so depressed, you would feel so negative. And I agree. Keep in mind that the news isn't sharing everything that happens, it's sharing the negative, the challenges the that have happened. So you don't hear a lot about the happy stories and the neighborhood watch and all of that stuff. And on top of that, you're hearing news from around the world, not just your neighborhood. So yeah, in the course of 24 hours, a lot of things negative happen in the world. A lot of good things happen too. So I think it really skews your interpretation and your view of the world. It changes the lens that you look through to a very negative light. You would also be very informed and we have to acknowledge that. I mean, you would be up to date on whatever's going on. You'd be able to speak to that, you'd have a very educated voice. You might be able to develop an opinion on different things, especially if the news story has been ongoing. But I would be seriously concerned about what it does to your mental health. I just can't see how you could stay in a positive frame of mind, constantly hearing that on a regular basis, you might end up. Another thing that has come up very often is scared that you'd be afraid to leave your house, you'd be afraid to send your kids to school, you'd be afraid to go to the store because, I mean, you'd be afraid someone's gonna grab your kids or you're gonna be in the middle of a bank robbery or, you know, you're gon involved in a fatal car accident if you drive out of the driveway. It very much skews your view. So take a minute and write in your answers and write in any that you came up with that I didn't say, like, what else would it do for you if you watch the news all day, every day for a straight month? We're going to pause the video again. Take the time to write down those answers. If you want to replay the video so you can hear my answers again, to be able to write them down, feel free. That's the joy of doing a video course. You are in control. And in a few minutes, we're going to come back and talk about scenario two. The second question, exact same idea. What would happen to you if. See you in a few moments. Here we are back at a day that changed everything. We're talking about garbage in, garbage out today. And now we're going to look at scenario two. So here it is. What would it do to you? How would it affect you if you listened to your favorite music, your playlist, every single time you got in the car for a straight month? How would it affect you? I'm going to say, you know what, I'm actually going to pause the video. I want you to fill in your answer first. How would it affect you to listen to your favorite playlist every single time you got in the car for a straight month? And let's assume that you get in the car every single day? Okay, I'm going to add that in When I do this in seminar, all of us were driving on a regular basis. So I don't want to skew the answers. And imagine you're driving every single day. If every time you got in the car you put on your favorite playlist, how would that affect you? Take a few minutes, fill in your answer, and then when we come back, I'm going to share my participant answers with you and what I would come up with for answers. See you in a few moments. Hello again, Sandy again. And back to a day that changed everything. And today we're talking about garbage in, garbage out. And we just looked at scenario two. What would happen if every single time you got in your car you turned on your favorite playlist and you did that for a straight month? How would it affect you? I can honestly say when I would do this in seminar, and I have many times over the last 11 years. This answer always surprised me. I don't know what your answer is, and I almost wish I was a fly on the wall to be able to see what your answer is. But it always surprised me how many people thought this would be a negative, that they said no, you would get so sick of that music and you would end up hating your favorite songs. It would be awful. I don't know if you wrote that, but that always surprised me because that has never happened to me. I actually, and I know because I do this, I actually have a favorite playlist that I play, one that I play while I'm working. And it's almost like my brain goes into work mode when it hears that playlist. And it's not even like I'm really listening, it's playing in the background, but I stay focused. It got to the point, and it's a playlist that I used to play when I worked in my previous career. It got to the point where I could almost tell what time of day it was by what song was playing. And then I have another playlist that I listen to every single night. Now as a motivational speaker, that was something I had to do only because I travel so much and I was in a different hotel every single night and I was finding it really hard to sleep by having the playlist on my phone, and I always have my phone with me. And by turning on that playlist, no matter where I am, my brain knows it's sleep time, right? And I can just relax and go to sleep. I still love those songs I add to the playlist when I hear a new song that I absolutely love. But I have never gotten Sick of those songs. I love them. They bring me joy every single time. And listening to them every single day is not a negative in any single way. So anyway, so I highly suggest you try it if you know, honestly, during isolation and I'm filming this during self isolation and the pandemic, my playlist has been such a source of joy. On those days when I miss my friends and I was struggling, I can turn on my favorite music and suddenly I'm dancing while I'm doing dishes or cooking dinner. It's a joy. So don't assume it's a negative. I guess if you've never tried it, make sure it's your favorite playlist, not just some random playlist filled with the songs you absolutely love. And then give it a try. When we come back, we're gonna look at scenario three, or you can go ahead and look at it right now. Scenario three is, imagine that you hang out with negative people every day, all day for a straight month. Now, whether you're doing that on a plain piece of paper or on the worksheet, same thing. What would happen to you? What do you think would happen to you if you hung out with negative people all day, every day for a straight month? I'm going to pause the video. Take the time to answer it again. Remember, this is about action. If you don't physically do the exercises, you're not going to get the benefit. And you paid good money for this. You need to get those benefits. Take a few moments. When we come back, we'll discuss the answers. And we're back with the last scenario that we're going to discuss in this video. What would happen to you if you spent all day, every day, listening to negative people for a straight month? Well, I kind of hinted at the answer to that earlier. I would bet that the things that start coming out of your mouth start becoming incredibly negative. And I know for a while if you're a positive person like me in the beginning, you're gonna be arguing with them. You're gonna try to be that positive influence. But we're talking about every single day, all day, for a straight month. Do not. Here's a hint for you. Please listen to this. Do not do that to yourself. Do not test yourself like that. You have no idea, or maybe you do, how exhaust is to constantly be trying to lift someone up. The reality is you're now picking up baggage that isn't yours to carry, and the only thing you're doing is slowing your progress. You can be a positive person, and when they reach out to you. You can offer them that support. But when you're trying to save someone, that doesn't help. Sometimes we just have to let people walk their walk. Now, I know there's negative people in my world. Again, I don't spend tons of time with them, but they will call me when the rest of their negative friends are coming down on them and they need positive reassurance. They know they can get that from me. And I take great pride in being that person. So I think this would incred. This would depress you. You would give up on your dreams. You would slow your process. You might start self sabotaging the things you've already achieved. I have seen some. So many people in our communities struggling with addictions that relapse because they start hanging around with those people. That. And you know what? If you want to identify a negative person, they say things like, why bother? It's never going to change. Why even try? They're never going to let us do that. That victim mentality, that giving up. If you give up, you will never have your dreams. So please hang around with people that help you and support you. And at bare minimum, don't encourage you to give up. Because you can't. You absolutely can't. When we come back, I'm going to close off this video for today with just one last thought for you. I'll be back in a few moments. And there you have it, My Friends video 13 of a day that changed everything. We focused on garbage in, garbage out. We did three of the scenarios together. There's three more in the exercise sheet. Please take the time to complete it. Today, I wanted to leave you with one reality, one thought that I truly need you to embrace. Your future will not be a surprise. Your future is being built right now. It will be built on what you're thinking, what you're saying, and what you're doing today. And if you don't believe that, think about it. Whatever situation you're in now is because of decisions you made before. If you're in a relationship, that's because somewhere in your past, you chose to be in a relationship with that person. If you live in a certain community, it's because you either chose to move there or chose to stay there. We have to realize that it's the seeds we plant today. I have the successful business I have today because I have been planting seeds to get here for 11 years. I have three books out, soon to be four, because I work at that every single day. So that's why this course is so important and why I'm so proud that you're here, because you are planting great seeds. As long as you remember to take action. Because remember, if nothing changes, then nothing changes. Until next week. Now remember, next week's video is super, super important. We're going to talk about how to change that voice in your head. Until then, take care of you. Stay well, stay safe. And please stay home if we're watching this during the pandemic. I'll see you next week. Love you. Bye. Bye.
