How to Discourage Loved Ones From Defending Barriers

Sandi L Boucher explains Personal Power Principle #11: stop defending barriers by changing how you talk about limits. When loved ones say "I can't," reframe it as "not yet" and offer belief and help. This practice connects to Indigenous teachings and reconciliation.

Foreign. Hello again, everybody. I'm Sandy Boucher, Red Thunderbolt, woman of the Loon clan. I'm a proud member of Seine River First Nation in Northern Ontario. And I'm here once again, one more time to expand on personal power principle number 11. Now, just to reiterate for those people that are confused, I am an Indigenous woman. I'm Nishna Beque, and I am a huge advocate for Canadian reconciliation. I have to say, what's been going on lately, that's not reconciliation, but I believe we can do this. And, and there's two sides to this reconciliation journey. On one side, non Indigenous people being educated on history, because that hasn't happened up till now, and changing their behavior because of the new information. And on the Indigenous side, the healing and growth and empowerment of Indigenous people. Returning to the pride and self determination determination we had before the settlers arrived. And that's what these personal power principles are all about. Indigenous teachings and cultures of all. There's so many different Indigenous cultures, but they're empowering. The teachings resonate even if you're not Indigenous. These personal power principles that I've been sharing with you are, are principles I live my life by. It's how I manage to maintain my teachings and my worldview as an Indigenous woman, even though I live in a very Western society here in Canada. Now, to remind you one more time, just so you remember, what we're talking about here is personal power principle number 11. You will forever be limited by, by the barriers you choose to defend. Now, as always, the last video of the month is when we talk about how do you share this principle with those you love, with your children, your grandchildren, your partner? Every single time you hear them defending a barrier, saying things like, I could never do that, or I, I can't do that, stop them, interrupt the conversation and just remind them that what they believe they will achieve, which means if they keep telling themselves they can't, they won't. Why not? Instead, say, you can't do that yet. I don't know how to do this yet because I honestly believe if you have some crazy idea of something you'd like to do, that's creator giving you a hint to your potential, something you can do. And I know personally I have achieved more than I used to ever think would be possible. But the first step to doing that was stop telling myself I can't. So one more time, you will forever be limited by the barriers you choose to defend. Stop your grandchildren and say, no, it's not that you can't do that you can't do it yet. I believe in you. Do you really want to learn how to do this? I can help you learn how to do this. There's going to be enough people telling them that they can't do something. There's enough people telling you and your partner that you don't have to be one of them. And do your best to make sure that they're not one of them, either. I hope that makes sense. Next week, I'm introducing the Last of the 12 Personal Power Power principles. We did it, and it's been an amazing journey. I can't wait to hear what you think. Oh, and by the way, I might have a surprise for you. Until next week. I love you. Take care. Bye. Bye.
