This is a YouTube video titled "Indians Just Want Money" (created 2025-05-19) featuring Sandi L Boucher delivering a spoken monologue about Indigenous needs beyond cash payments. She recounts a land-claim settlement anecdote, cautions that lump-sum payouts can worsen harms because money magnifies existing behaviors, and argues Indigenous communities need supports (mental health services, health care, facilities for children, healing opportunities) rather than being blamed. The piece situates present problems as consequences of historical actions by Canada.

To all of you people who think indigenous people just want money, or even worse, that we just want more money, that we always want more money, you could be more wrong. And I can say that with all certainty, having experienced not only in my life, but firsthand with a community that will remain nameless, that received a land claim settlement and part of the settlement went to the community as a whole, and part was distributed as a lump sum payment to each of the community members. There was in this case like three different options of what the percentage SC split would be and the membership got to vote on which they wanted to take. And of course, those in leadership, including elders, women, youth, discussed the options and the reality of what would happen once this payout was received. And I heard a quote that I will never forget, it was said in response, we were having a discussion about the consequences of this payout. And an elder shared, we're going to lose some people. We have to really be careful here. We're going to lose some people. And I knew absolutely what she meant, because I believe with all my heart that money is simply a magnifier. It allows you to do more of what you're already doing. If you are doing healthy things, things, if you are already helping other people, you will be able to help more people. And if you are already making bad or dangerous decisions or both, it will allow you to make even worse decisions or more bad decisions, increasing the chances of horrific consequences. So no, we don't just want money. We want help. We want opportunities to heal. We don't want anyone saving us. We want the supports. We want mental health services, we want health services. We want the facilities we need for our children to be healthy. We want so much more and need so much more than just money. And let us never forget, we didn't do this to ourselves. We are dealing and trying to overcome the consequences of what Canada did to us. So let's quit blaming the victims.
