A brief member-only YouTube short by Sandi L Boucher in which she—speaking as Anishinaabe—uses an imagined mother analogy to criticize Earth Day as a largely performative, once-a-year attention. She frames Earth as Mother Earth, links climate change to sporadic concern, and urges listeners to care for the planet every day rather than only on symbolic observances.

Hello, you absolutely amazing person, you. Welcome to my first Members Only short. I want you to imagine something for a moment. I want you to imagine your mom, a mom you adore. Hopefully that's not hard for you to imagine. But imagine that you absolutely adore your mom. But you only think of her once a year. Maybe it's Mother's Day. Maybe it's her birthday. 364 days of the year. She never enters your thoughts. But once a year, you tell the world and her how much you love her. That's kind of what I think of Earth Day. I'm Anishinaabe. Earth is Mother Earth to me. I think of the Earth and we should be thinking of the Earth every single day. Climate change is a thing. Climate change is a result of us thinking of Mother Earth once a year. It seems to me like one of those performative days on a calendar, like another day where people get to wear orange shirts and prepare or pretend that they do things. 364 other days of the year. Don't just celebrate Earth Day. Don't just be aware of the damage you do to the Earth on Earth Day. Every single day is what Mother Earth needs. I hope that resonated. Until next time. I love you. Take care. Bye bye.
