Raising Your Child ... Our Way?

YouTube video by Sandi L Boucher (Anishinaabe Kwe, Ojibwe woman of Seine River First Nation) discussing how mainstream parenting advice is aligning with Indigenous teachings. She emphasizes allowing children freedom to explore so they reveal their true gifts—using nature as a restorative space—and celebrates mainstream adoption of this perspective. The video includes personal background, cultural framing, examples of children discovering roles (fishing, hunting, plants), and a closing call-to-action to subscribe or join her email list.

Nothing makes me happier as Anishinaabe Kwe, as an Ojibwe woman, than when mainstream catches up with Indigenous teachings. This video is really gonna resonate with the parents out there. So let's talk about it. Saganon Quain Additionagast Mung Dodam hi, everybody. My name is Sandy Boucher. I'm Red Thunderbolt, woman of the Loon clan, a proud member of Seine River First Nation in Trainy 3 Territory in Northern Ontario. And here I am once again for another week, trying to reconcile the country because I like little manageable visions and goals, something you can accomplish by Tuesday. I offer an Indigenous perspective to help non Indigenous Canadians understand the challenges and the barriers to us working together. If we understand each other better, then we can truly build bridges. So, as I mentioned in the opening, nothing makes me happier than when mainstream wakes up to an Indigenous teaching. Or they come. They grow in their understanding and their wisdom to something we've known since we were two because our elders passed it on to us. For example, you don't have to go very far in mainstream to have someone tell you that being in nature is rejuvenating, that to go camping or even just to sit by the water or under a tree is going to be good for your mental health. Well, I'm Anishinaabe Kwe. I'm an Ojibwe woman, and I was raised listening to elders say, you're stressed. Get back to the bush. You don't know how to solve a problem. Get back to the bush, sit near the water, sit under a tree. The answer will come to you now. Recently I came across another one, and this one, like I said, just made me smile from the soul. Because what I started seeing in numerous places, different articles, different wording, but the same idea definitely aimed at parents, as I mentioned in the opening. And the quote was. Or just the idea that your job as a parent is not to mold or develop your child, but to reveal your child to help them realize who they are. How many years have Indigenous parents been crucified as bad parents for not restricting their children or telling them how to behave? You see, traditionally, we let the children run, and we watched the. Because we just wanted to let them run. We wanted to see where they went. Some of the children were fascinated by the plants in the bush. Some wanted to get near the water. They loved watching the fishermen. Some were great in battle, they loved shooting. And others were amazing hunters. The children revealed to the community who they were, and in turn, we understood why creators sent them to us. So I personally love the fact that mainstream is getting on board for the sake of the children. I think it's absolutely amazing that all of our children, no matter what your cultural background, are finally going to be able to become who they were designed to be and not who we wanted them to be for the sake of happiness and mental well being. I think that is definitely a step in the right direction. I have yet another week of amazing sharing and blog post for you, so stick around. If you haven't subscribed yet, please do so that if you don't have time to watch them during the week, you can watch them on the weekend. And if you want to really make sure you don't miss anything, well, go to sandy boucher.com and get on my email list. Then you get these sent to you either weekly or daily. Your choice. Until tomorrow. I love you. Take care. Bye bye.
