A short YouTube talk by Sandi L Boucher (Seine River First Nation) about principle #5 of her 12 principles of personal power: 'Teach others how to treat you.' She urges listeners to model self-kindness and self-respect—taking breaks, honoring hunger, speaking respectfully about oneself—and to set boundaries by limiting exposure to people who are disrespectful. Boucher shares that she is a 10-year domestic abuse survivor and credits practicing this principle with removing disrespectful people from her life. The video ends with calls-to-action to join her email list, visit her YouTube channel, and comment.

Foreign. Hi everybody. Once again, I'm Sandy Boucher, Red Thunderbolt, woman of the loon clan. I'm a proud member of Seine River First Nation in Northern Ontario. And I am so excited. Excited because once again, I am presenting you with yet another one of the 12 principles of personal power. This month we are looking at principle number five. And I can honestly say there was a time in my life that I forgot this teaching, even though it was my mom's teaching. I can also say that when I remembered and started practicing it, everything changed. For the better. So what is that teaching? Have I made you wait long enough? Okay, here it is. Teach others how to treat you. If you want them to be kind to you, be kind to you. If you want them to respect you, respect you. Show them how. Isn't that exciting? I spent and I hear people saying this all the time and I spent so much of my life wishing that so and so would treat me better and so and so would stop being disrespectful. And so and so would be kinder to me. Until my mother reminded me that I teach other people how to treat me. If you want other people to respect your boundaries, they need to see you respecting your boundaries. If you want them to be kind to you, they need to see you being kind to you. They need to see you taking a break when you're tired, eating when you're hungry, treating yourself with compassion and patience. They need to see you be kind to you. And if you want them to respect you, you respect you by how you talk about yourself, by how you carry yourself, by how you behave. We can all remember. I've mentioned it a few times now that I'm a 10 year domestic abuse survivor. There was a time I was surrounded by disrespectful people. I can honestly say there isn't even one person like that in my life now. Because I have taught people how to treat me. And if they want to treat me disrespectfully, they don't get to stay in my world. It is that simple. And yes, that means family members. There are some family members that say and do things that really don't fit in my world. I'm not going to disown them, but I'm definitely going to limit my exposure to them. I'm not going to let them take over my world. They have the right to walk their path and do it the way they want to, but they don't have the right to influence mine unless I give them the power to. Back to a previous principle. So one more time, here is principle number five. Teach others how to treat you. If you want them to be kind to you, be kind to you. If you want them to respect you, respect you, show them how. Now, as always, if you're on my email list, then you're going to get background, you're going to get little exercises you can do to help reinforce this. Get on my email list. If you are not.
