A Buddhist teacher explains that attachment, not love, causes suffering. Attachment is clinging to things or people, like obsessing over your phone or panicking when family struggles. Love is caring without grasping. The question becomes how to actually let go.
Geshe, how do you define attachment in Buddhism?
Actually, according to the Buddhist philosophy, attachment is main cause of suffering. Our minds, you know, cannot separate from something. Always our mind with them. This is meaning of, you know, attachment. For example, you know, I attachment my mobile. My mind always with mobile. Cannot separate from mobile. This is meaning of attachment. But too much strong attachment is very bad. That means, you know, if my family have some problem, I'm worried, I'm unhappy, because I too much attachment to my family. Other family get problem, I never feel. This is many of you know, attachment is a cause of suffering. You can love, you can take care of him, you can take care of her, you can love her. But love and attachment different. Love is always positive. Attachment is a negative emotion.
And letting go attachment, how do we let it go?
If you understand more about reputation, name, this life, then you can release attachment.
