Day 3 // Trust in the LORD #wiseupchallenge24

In this solo devotional, Sharnita Gates leads Day 3 of the 31‑day Proverbs/ Wise Up Challenge, focusing on Proverbs chapter 3 with the theme “Trust in the Lord.” She frames the day as a “playbook” for building a spiritual toolbox, emphasizing a mindset of “faith over fear.” The talk weaves together scriptural citations (Proverbs 3, Psalms 119:11, Luke 9, Philippians 4:6‑8) and personal illustrations to show how trusting God, hiding His word in the heart, and shunning evil produce peace, health, prosperity, and sound judgment. Practical spiritual disciplines are outlined—daily learning, prayer with thanksgiving, surrounding oneself with wise influences, and the concept of “audibles” (spiritual recalibrations) when doubt arises. She uses vivid metaphors such as the “tree of life,” a “necklace of love and faithfulness,” and the “lamp unto my feet” to illustrate the protective and life‑giving power of wisdom. The overarching takeaway is to trust the Lord with all one’s heart, submit all ways to Him, and let biblical wisdom guide decisions, thereby avoiding earthly wisdom that leads to destruction.
Chapters
Greetings everyone, and welcome back to day 3 of our 31 Days of Proverbs Provisional Actions Challenge and the Wise Up Challenge 24, where each day we are diving into a chapter of the book of Proverbs. And so today I wanna dive right into it as we are crafting a playbook As we go on this path of life, we're crafting a playbook and we're having some different audibles. So in some situations, we might have to rely on wisdom, and that's what the Book of Proverbs, it provides, is wisdom. It provides instructions, understanding, and knowledge. And today, our, our, our, our approach And our play for day 3, for chapter 3 of the book of Proverbs, is the Trust in the Lord. And so we're going to dive right into the play. So the purpose, the main strategy, is to trust in our higher power and trusting in the Lord with all our heart and knowing that that is greater Um, than ourselves and relying on our own understanding and relying with all we have on being able to trust in the Lord within our hearts. So as we go through Proverbs 3, we're building up, like we talked about on yesterday, our toolbox, our heart, a place where we hide the word. And so our mindset for Proverbs 3 is faith over fear. So as we dive deeper into the wisdom literature of Proverbs, we're going to be able to hear more faith because the faith is more about the word of God. And so the more and more we hear the word of God and really put it into practice— so we get the information, we reread the Bible, we put it in, put it into our lives. and make wise decisions, better decisions, using our discernment based off of our, our heart. We want a good heart. And we was reading Luke 9, and it talks about a little bit deeper as far as the soil, our hearts being more like the soil where the seed, the word of God, can be planted in our hearts. So Proverbs 3, for me, is— it was more of an approach for me hearing the voice of our Father, and the Father really giving some teachings that we can really hold to and hide in our heart. Um, and like we were— the scripture on yesterday where it was talking about hiding the word in our hearts, and that was, uh, Psalms 119. And I wanted to kind of just touch back on The playbooks really briefly. For day 1, the playbook was the fear of the Lord, and we're asking God for wisdom and that he so graciously give us when we ask. Day 2, the playbook was seeking wisdom. So now we have to seek the— seek wisdom, and that's what we're doing as we dive into each chapter into the Bible. Um, in the Bible, and it was Psalms 119:11. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. So once you know the word, then you, you can make better decisions. So the— in all our getting, we're getting an understanding, and so that we can build up the toolbox, our heart, and build it up as good soil. So this is Our Father is speaking. He says, don't forget my teachings. So our actions to really— for this playbook, the actions are making learning a daily habit. As we go through 31 days, we're going to be learning daily. So we're building up a habit, um, so that we cannot forget the teachings of our Father. And we're surrounding ourselves with positive influence. We, we hear the scripture, walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers much harm. And so you're not really hearing more about the word of Christ when you are surrounded by people who are not positive influence and not really speaking the word into your life. So he's saying, don't forget my teachings. And he said, keep my commands in your heart. That's why I like Psalms 119 and 11, because what it, uh, what it produces when you hold to those teachings, when you don't forget them and you remember the commands, it prolongs your life. Because with what, what comes with that is peace and prosperity. Your heart is good, you know, it brings, um, a peace, you know, that peace that surpasses all understanding. Because you're really going into prayer. You're letting your petitions be known unto God with thanksgiving, and your, your understanding starts to shift. Like, okay, this is, um, what we, we talked about as far as earthly wisdom and scriptural wisdom. Um, if I'm praying and let my petitions be known to God and, you know, with thanksgiving, and then that peace that surpasses all understanding guards my heart and my mind. in Christ Jesus, then that's biblical scriptures. That's, that's the word. That's, that's wisdom, um, biblical wisdom. But if I'm leaning to my own understanding, then that's earthly wisdom, okay? You know, um, you should do this, but the fil— we're putting it through the filter of the word. Um, well, how— what, what would my Father Teach me it in this situation. I need the teachings, the grounding of the Father and His commands because that's what are what's going to be in my heart so that I can make better and why and make wise decisions. And so with that, our eyes are on the love of God and the faithfulness, the the scripture, you know, being patient. Being kind, not envying, not taking— keeping records of wrongs, um, and really taking our time to really study to show ourselves approved and having a relationship with Jesus and the word of God, the entire Bible, studying the word. And it's like when you're reading the Bible, it's like writing, um, the word on the tablets of your heart, your eyes, your, your seeking. Keep your eyes On love and faithfulness. And it's like a, a necklace around, uh, your neck, you know. It's, it's like love and faithfulness. It is, is coming from your heart, um, because your eyes are on the, on the word. It's on love, it's on faithfulness. And with that comes favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. And so we're starting to understand, okay, favor in the Lord, you know, in his sight, what's favorable? Love and faithfulness and peace and prosperity based off of you holding to his teachings, um, and his commands. And that's— that allows you to be able— like I said, a good heart that is around your neck, love and faithfulness— it allows you to be able to trust in the Lord with all your heart and not lean to your own understanding. Because now you're, you're submitting all your ways over to the Lord. In all your ways, you're submitting those over to the Lord, and then he makes straight your path. Your path, because now your, your path can be straight because you're able to be wise as you go along the path and not having to use earthly wisdom, which leads to destruction in the end. But when you fear the Lord, like we started with day 1, you fear the Lord, your path— you're going along the path, you're making wise decisions. And one of the wise decisions that it speaks about is shunning evil. So, okay, that's evil, let me, let me push that to the side. I would, you know, earthly wisdom That destruction, you know, like it was talking about, um, if someone tries to entice you to, you know, steal or, you know, break one of the commandments, um, that's why it's like keep his commandments in your heart, knowing that I, you know, and remembering this is what my Father said. No. And so we're in tuning our ear to wisdom. And it allows you to shun evil, so you're able to be wise along the path because he's making straight your, your path. And so when you do that, when you shun evil, you— this gives a lot of insight. Like, shunning evil, it brings health to your body. It brings health to your body because now you're, you're receiving peace, you're receiving prosperity in your mind, clarity, that spirit of fear, but it gives you power, love, and a sound mind. Like, your eyes are on the, the love of God, and then your bones are getting the nourishment that it needs, which produces the, the good, the good wealth. Because it says, do not be wise in your own eyes. So when you are leaning to your own understanding or earthly wisdom, but you know, it may seem right, but it leads to destruction. But being wise and using biblical teachings and putting it into practice. Okay, I'm gonna trust in the Lord with all my heart. I'm gonna lean not to my own understanding. The situations, like I said, we have audibles. So sometimes we might have to throw an audible. So if there is, if there is doubt, you might have to throw audible and recalibrate something in your, in your life. So okay, this is earthly wisdom. So that's where it comes into bringing um, your life into alignment with the word and be able to test and approve what God's good, pleasing, and perfect will is. And so when you have to recalibrate, you have to kind of look over, okay, in the past when I went off of earthly wisdom, it didn't bring me great success. It led right down to destruction. So now I need to, um, grab a filter, grab the Bible, the word, and filter the situation And ask God for, you know, clarity, um, so I don't conform to the pattern of the world, but I could be transformed by the renewing of my mind. So a new scripture could be, you know, your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. So the— I need the word. I, I— oh, I didn't take that through, you know, the word of God. And so you can recalibrate and say, okay, I need to— for this situation, I need to really get it over to God and, you know, pray before. Oh, thank you, Father, and giving, you know, gratitude. That's why I really like Philippians 4:6-8, um, to really go in with prayer petitions with thanksgiving and then letting that request be made known to God. So really going through those steps, and this is really giving us some steps here in the playbook for Proverbs 3. It's saying, hold, you know, keep my teaching, don't forget my teachings. And then, you know, keep the word, the commands in your heart, um, because you can always— out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. So when you hide the word in your heart, you're speaking the word, you can speak life into your life. And that's being wise, you know, biblical teaching, because you're acknowledging him and submitting everything over to his ways and trusting in, you know, this outcome based off of the word. I know it's the best, you know, uh, outcome. It's a wise outcome. Um, so, and that it allows us to not be wise in our own eyes. So that's one— that's the teaching, uh, for that part. And we was talking about the wealth when you put those things into practice and along your path you're shunning evil and Your bones are getting the, you know, is getting healthy. You're, I mean, the nourishment that it needs in your body is becoming healthy because of a good heart and the soil here that the word is starting to bloom inside of you. And, um, is your, your growing in wisdom and in stature and favor with God and man. That's why it was like in the sight of the Lord, a good name and favor. um, comes from it. And then you'll be able to give your first fruits of all your crops. Like, thank you, thank you for this wisdom. Thank you for it. Thank you for day one of the fear of the Lord. Thank you, God, that I can fear you. Thank you. Um, I, I'm getting an understanding of your wisdom. I'm gaining principles every single day. I'm, I'm getting your teaching. And that leads us into, um, new wine. Thank you for the new wine, um, because your barn starts to fill and overflow. It starts to overflow, and that's the new wine. Your body have health and, uh, peace and prosperity, love and faithfulness because of the teachings and you actually doing what the word and putting it into practice. I'm gonna remember the teachings. I'm going to, you know, um, keep the, the word in my heart. Um, his commands and remember that. So really, we have to remember. That's the, that's the big takeaway, the plate today. Trust in the Lord, remember the teachings, and do not despise the Lord's discipline. So the Lord disciplines the one that he loves, and so we don't want to resent his rebukes. So there's Some things that, like I said, in righteousness we're going to have to go through the process of correction, being rebuked, some things being, um, going through the trainings and also his teachings. That's why I say he said, don't forget my teaching, because every scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching us, correcting us into righteousness, um, so that we be thoroughly equipped for the good work that we are called here to do. on this earth. And so that's the love of the Father. Just thinking about the love of the Father, that he loves us and we delight— his son delights in the love of the discipline, the rebuke, um, and the knowledge that the Lord has. He has— he holds that true wealth of the knowledge. And I love how it says like the clouds drop the dew, the watery depths divide it. So it's like The the word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword, you know, piercing even you know bone and marrow and spirit. And it's it's it's so deep. That's how the knowledge and the discipline of our Father is with the love. And now this is where it comes in to talk about wisdom. When you find wisdom, when you gain understanding by the Father, um, it actually— that's what he said. The earth's foundations was laid, the heavens are in place. And it uses the, um, it uses she as her as far as when you find wisdom and when you gain understanding. She— the blessings, like, blessed, blessed is she. She's like a tree of life. So just think about a tree of life, um, and it says she is more profitable than silver, better returns than gold, more precious than rubies. Now when we talk about those 3 things, as far as rubies, gold, silver, let's talk about desire. There's things that we desire, and so just think about the how much If how it feels to desire something. And what it says is that her— that's, you know, more profitable, you yield more returns. The Tree of Life is greater than that desire. So her left hand is, is full of riches and honor. Her right hand is long life. And this is what I love, everywhere all around her is peace. Peace. Peace, peace. Because then it makes me think about Philippians 4:6, where it's like the peace that, that peace that surpasses all understanding, surpasses all understanding. When you gain that peace, she, that Tree of Life, passes all understanding because he's guarding your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus. thinking about Jesus all day, you know, your mind, you having them just think about the mind of Christ. Oh, that's, that's so good. Peace all around. So everywhere, all her ways, it leads to peace. And so she's like a tree of life. And this is what it says. It says those that take hold of her and those that take hold of her fast will be blessed. So when you see wisdom and understanding, take hold, take hold of it, take hold of it. And it says that keep it in your sight. Do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight. So when you see, when you see her, you know, to see a tree of life, do not let it out of sight. You want to keep— that's why it's like hold to the teachings and remember You know, remember the teachings and hold, you know, put the commandments in your heart because it preserves sound judgment. That's why it's like God did not give us that spirit of fear, but power, love, and a sound mind. A sound mind, self-discipline. And so with that self-discipline and discretion, you can start to basically—it's like an ornament of grace. I know I have peace. Um, sound judgment, you know, someone who's going to, you know, what I'm looking at, what's in my sight is wisdom and understanding. So I see the teachings of my Father, I see the love of my Father. And so on your way, like, we're going through that path and we want long life. That's why I like, you know, eternal, when you talk about eternal life. And then we're talking about the Tree of Life. You know, she is like a Tree of Life that prolonged peace and prosperity, love and faithfulness, like an ornament around your neck, um, because it blocks, um, the snares, you know, the wiles of the devil, um, the principalities that we face on, on your way. Because you— it's, it's safety when you have a peace of mind, when you have wisdom and understanding. You can make great decisions along the path. Um, but you, if you lose sight of that, it's, it's so easy, you know, it's so easy. Because that's why I like shunning evil. You get rid of all the evil that is just so prevalent. The evil is just so prevalent. We're going to touch on that a little bit more because I like how it lists like 5 different things that shows like some perverse ways. And we, we could easily miss it because it's not like it's very perverse when it comes to, um, different type of sexual perversion. But this is a different type of perversion that it talks about. But it blocks this when you don't lose sight of wisdom and understanding. And you'll be able to— it says the Lord is on your side, because that heart— the heart and the mind is guarded by Christ Jesus. And so when you lie down, you will not be afraid. Your sleep will be sweet. No fear of sudden disasters or ruin that overtakes the wicked. So you, you having a peace of mind, that's a peace of mind, you know. It's having that in your sight, wisdom and understanding. And it says these are the 5 things: do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when in your power to act. Now, this is where we really have to locate ourselves, because when we have the power to act, do sometimes we withhold good from those To whom it is due. This is where it comes in. That's why I said the love of the Father, really putting this into practice, really doing some self-reflection, self-discipline, because it keeps you in a sound mind. Like, if I did do it, you know, it wasn't wise. Now I can put it through the filter of the word and say, okay, that's a perverse action. Let me really look into my, you know, take a, take a moment to really look at my life and see, or so that when, when the situation do arrive when I can do good and I have the power to act on it, I will.
