Jumpstart Your Insurance Marketing in 5 Simple Steps

In this instructional video, Shauna Thoresen addresses insurance agents and other licensed professionals who are frustrated with buying low‑quality leads from vendors. She outlines a five‑step framework to help them take control of their own marketing and lead generation without expensive courses or tech overwhelm. The steps are: (1) Get nosy – actively research competitor ads across Facebook, Instagram, Reels, and Stories, interact with every element of the ads, and use a “spy” email (and a public phone number workaround) to experience the full user funnel; (2) Learn the audience’s language – monitor forums, Reddit, Facebook groups, YouTube comments, and use AI (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT) with a provided prompt to surface pain points and common phrasing; (3) Clarify your personal brand – define what you stand for and against, craft a brand statement based on how others talk about you when you’re not present, and differentiate yourself from typical marketers; (4) Update social‑media bios – focus on Meta platforms, use a personal profile photo, apply a concise bio formula (who you help, what problem you solve, what makes you different), keep profiles public and consistent; (5) Start posting – treat posting as practice to build confidence, set a realistic weekly posting cadence for a month, use provided hook guides for content ideas, and focus on delivering value rather than immediate lead conversion. Throughout, Shauna emphasizes that pre‑selling through trusted marketing can accomplish up to 70% of the sale before a live conversation, and that consistent, authentic posting builds credibility and reduces dependence on lead vendors. She offers a downloadable guide with detailed prompts, screenshots, and bonus tips, and encourages viewers to subscribe, ask questions, and download the free resources.

If you're an insurance agent or licensed professional who is tired of purchasing leads from lead vendors who do not care about your business and you are ready to start taking control of your marketing, this video is for you. I'm going to share with you the 5 steps for you to jumpstart your marketing and start moving in the right direction where you can own your leads, own your marketing, and own your growth. Now, today there's no tech overwhelm. There are no expensive courses. It is just 5 steps that you can start taking right now to start owning your marketing. So let's dive in. In case we haven't met yet, my name is Shauna, and I am on a mission to teach as many insurance agents and other licensed professionals how they can own their marketing and own their own lead generation. Here's the thing, leads are literally the fuel to your business, and the reality is no one is going to care about the quality of your leads and what your message is more than you. The reality is lead vendors are in the business of selling you leads. They're very good at marketing their leads and talking about them in a way that makes them seem like they're going to be the perfect fit for your business. They're high quality, they're high intent. We're doing all of these crazy things to make sure that they're the absolute best leads. But the reality is you and lead vendors want different things. Lead vendors want quantity so they are able to sell them to you. You want quality. And something that is so important for agents to realize is if you can do the right marketing before an individual ever talks to you on the phone or sits down in a seat in front of you, you can do 70% of the selling before you ever even talk to them. When someone walks in and they're able to trust you from the very beginning, they're not only going to respect you more, they're going to listen to what you have to say, and it's going to make your job so much easier. Now, I understand that marketing can seem extremely overwhelming, and that's why today I'm going to share with you the very first 5 steps that you can take in order to jumpstart the process of owning your marketing. And before we jump in, I want to point out that There is an accompanying guide that goes along with this video. I have linked below my entire guide, How to Jumpstart Your Marketing: The 5 Essential Steps. We're going to be diving into them in a little bit different of an angle in this video, but in case you want to make sure that you have the actual written out information that I'm going to be sharing with you, you want to make sure that you grab that guide. Step number 1, get nosy. Seriously, I want you to get nosy and I want you to get super duper curious of what ads are actually out there and what the user experience is. So it is very different whenever you are looking at ads and analyzing ads to see what's actually out there versus when you are interacting with those ads as a user. When I very first started learning marketing in 2015, and I swear to you, one of the things that has helped me stay on top of what works, what doesn't work, and it's also really advanced my ability to know how to create ads that are going to be high converting, is being nosy, is becoming obsessed obsessed with what's actually out there and being obsessed with what the user experience is. So the entire purpose of this is for you to be scrolling on social media, on Facebook, on Instagram, and for you to actually interact with the ads as though you are the person that they are trying to target. So here's what you're going to do. Okay, so number one, you're going to set a timer for 15 minutes and you are going to scroll on Facebook or scroll on Instagram. It's going to be 15 minutes of research scrolling. I want you to click on anything that is even remotely relevant. If you're a Medicare agent, click on every single Medicare ad that you possibly can see in your newsfeed, even to start clicking on some initial insurance ads that you might see to start getting the algorithm to start serving you those types of ads. Number 2, I want you to click on every single part of that ad. I want you to click on the see more. I want you to read what the copy has to say. I want you to click on the link. I want you to see what it looks like whenever the form comes up. I want you to see what it looks like when the landing page loads right there on mobile. And number 3, I want you to interact with the ads on different places. So on Facebook and on Instagram, there are 3 main places that the ads are going to be served. One, in the newsfeed. I wanna make sure that you're scrolling through the newsfeed, you see what those ads look like. 2, Reels. These are the vertical video ads. So when you're scrolling through, I want you to pause whenever you see a vertical video ad so you can see what the user experience is when the button pops up, what might happen, and then how it looks whenever you actually click that And number 3, a spot that a lot of people miss is the story placement. And that is the little profiles that are up at the top on Facebook and Instagram that will have a little circle around it. You're able to click on that and you're able to see stories that people post. Now, when you post a story, it's only up for 24 hours, but that is a very, very high-converting and utilized placement that Facebook will serve ads. So you'll be watching someone, like what they're doing for the day, and then an ad will come in. So I want you to have that experience. Number 4, I want you to sign up for the funnels and the workflows just like any user would. Now, here's my little tip, okay? I say that every good marketer should at least have one spy email. I definitely have a spy email, and I have created a Gmail account that is completely anonymous, and then I have that Gmail app on my phone, and I only log into that Gmail app, and I only go into that specific inbox whenever I am in research mode. This way it stays anonymous. I also am able to keep things separate so I'm not flooding my inbox by all of the different offers that I'm constantly signing up for. Now, here's an extra little bonus tip. If there is an SMS verification required, which there are a lot of insurance ads that require SMS verification, there are ways that you're able to get a public telephone number where you're able to get the phone number from the webpage, you're able to type it in, and then it's going to pop up there as a text message on that free public phone number for you to verify the phone number and continue with the process. Now, if you want the one that I like the best, I actually have that linked inside of the guide. So if you grab that guide that is down below under step number 1, you're going to see this bonus tip of how I get through the SMS verification. Now overall, this This step is extremely important because once you experience what it's like as a user, it's going to fast-track your understanding of why certain things work, why certain things don't work, and hopefully it's going to start inspiring you into how you could start speaking to your audience. If you see an ad or some messaging that really resonates with you, that you can see why it's so impactful, Take a screenshot of it. Get yourself a little folder on your phone and start saving those ads or start saving them to your desktop so you have something that you can refer to later. Step number 2, learn their language. Learn how your ideal client or your ideal customer is actually speaking. Learn how they talk about not just the product that you offer or whatever it is specifically that you are trying to sell or enroll them in, but learn how they talk about their problems, their frustrations, their overwhelm. Learn where the holes are whenever it comes to being served. Hear how they actually vocalize what is bothering them. In order for you to kill it at marketing, one of the best things that you can do is become obsessed with what your audience has to say. I am not an insurance agent, but I have become very good at marketing to insurance agents because I am obsessed with what you guys say. I am looking in Reddit. I am looking on Facebook. I am joining all of these different groups and forums, not to sell my services, but literally just to observe. To understand and to hear what you guys are saying. And then I take it one level deeper and I try to figure out what the clients that could potentially be working with you are saying. I go in and I read what senior groups are saying. I go in and I read the questions and the comments on different Medicare YouTube videos or content. And that's exactly what you need to be doing. So there's 2 ideal ways for you to learn what your audience is saying. One is joining different groups or just being nosy and looking at what they're actually saying. So go to where your actual audience Mm-hmm. Audiences and see what they're saying. But number 2 is actually a fast-track way for you to hear how your customers are talking, and that is using AI. One of my favorite ways to use AI is to give it a very robust prompt, have it go do a deep research pull from like the insurance forums, the way that agents are talking to each other, and hear what the top pain points are that you're talking about. I've also done this with the different lines of business. So when I'm coaching my final expense agents or I'm coaching annuities or long-term care or IUL or whatever it is, know what those ideal clients are saying, and you can do the exact same thing. Now I have in the guide below the exact prompt that you can copy and you can paste into whichever AI you prefer. At the time of me recording this video, I love Claude, so I highly recommend using Claude, but you can use Gemini, you can use ChatGPT, whichever one it is that you prefer the most. So if you want the exact prompt that I use to get the best results, grab that guide and you can just copy and paste it. Step number 3 is get clear on your brand. Get clear on what you are for and what you are against. Get clear on how you actually serve individuals, what pain points you solve, and how you actually help people. Now, this is something that can become so extremely complicated. How do you grow a personal brand? And so on. I'm gonna tell you what a personal brand is in under a minute. A personal brand is not how many followers you have, how many subscriptions you have, how many comments you have, how many views, or even how many clients you have. And there are so many people in this industry, especially in the insurance space, that buy followers, buy bots to comment, to like. That tells me they are super confused what a personal brand is. A personal brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room. It's how people see you and how they talk about interacting with you whenever you are no longer in the room. Now, I'm gonna tell you, with me, someone that is technically a marketer, I know I've had enough experience that whenever I say I'm a marketer, it is something that instantly kind of stirs up a little bit of distress, especially in y'all's industry. And I understand why, because there are a lot of marketers that take advantage of you. But when I went to my first, like, large insurance conference in 2023, when I first was introducing people and I didn't have my intro down well, Before I had spoke on stage and people didn't know who I was, they were coming up saying hi to me, and I said, "Oh, I'm a marketer." Okay, the look on these insurance agents' faces when I said I'm a marketer—they're like—it's almost like I stunk. They're like, "Ew, let me get away from you." And now I get it. I understand there are so many marketers that are scammy, and they are there to try to bait and switch you. I get it. Now, I have had insurance agents say that they relate to that—that there is a lot of distrust, that whenever you say I'm an insurance. agent. It's not something that people instantly trust. But here's the beautiful part of that. This is your opportunity to set yourself apart from other agents that are out there, or even other agents that are unknown. This is your way to make yourself start being all about how you help people and you serve people, and start leading with that. I don't lead anymore with, I'm a marketer, or, I teach people marketing. No. Instead, I share that I help insurance agents and licensed professionals generate their own exclusive leads without the overhead of an expensive marketing agency and without ever buying a lead from a lead vendor again. That is what I do. And if people want to know more, then I'll say, well, most systems keep agents dependent. I don't teach dependency, I teach capability. And if they want to know more, then I'll get into my course. But I lead my personal brand and what I'm all about, how I'm going to serve you and how I'm going to help you. And I've got 7 questions inside of the questionnaire below that you will be able to answer. It'll give you some clarity, and then that is what we're going to be pulling from whenever we move to step number 4. Step number 4 is update your social media bios. Go to your social media pages and get your profile photo, if there's a cover photo, and especially the written portion of your bio updated. Now, I get asked all the time, what social media platform should you be active on as an agent? The The best platform in my experience for you to get started on are Meta platforms. So that is making a Facebook profile and creating an Instagram business profile and linking the two together. Now, if you're like, girl, I don't even know how to like scroll around on Instagram or how to navigate it, now is the time for you to learn. I am telling you, if you would just take 15 minutes a day to focus on learning what the experience is in these different platforms, you are going to be light years ahead of other agents. And it is going to put you in the right direction for you to be able to own your marketing. Now, whenever it comes to your profile photo, I recommend that you have a photo of yourself because on social media networks, people want to connect with the person. So even if you have your name, like you have your first and last name and then dash, and then the name of your insurance agency or your company or your company name, having that name there and actually having a profile photo of you so they can see who you are is going to be the most impactful. People get on social media to connect with people, not to connect with businesses. Now, whenever it comes to your written bio, there is a formula that I have in the guide below, and it is, I help people who, with what it is that they are struggling with, and then a little blurb about what makes you different. Now, I'm not sure if you have heard of differentiation. You've definitely seen differentiation if you utilize AI, and that's when AI is like, it's not blank, it's not blank, but It's blank. Okay. AI overuses differentiation all the time, but it uses it because as humans, our brain, things just make more sense whenever we have something that is opposed to what it actually is. We then can understand it. And working that into how your bios on Instagram and even how you introduce yourself can make a difference. So in the previous example, when I was talking about how I introduce myself, whenever people say, well, how do you do that? I typically will say, Most lead systems are designed to keep agents dependent. I teach them how to own their marketing and own their growth. Or I'll say something like that, like most are designed to keep agents dependent. I teach them how to become capable, able, and fully able to generate their own exclusive leads. So having that differentiation can actually make a large impact. So make sure that your social media profiles are public. I don't want you to be a secret agent. I want people to be able to find you. Make sure that you have the same profile photo across all of the different platforms that you're going to be using. And by the way, it's okay for you just to start with one. If you're like, I only wanna do Facebook right now, only do Facebook right now. There's nothing wrong with it. I like Facebook and Instagram because you're able to link the two and you're able to kind of cross-post on them, but it all starts with you just taking the step in the right direction. And then update those bios. If you need help and inspiration, again, I've got the guide below. Step number 5 is start posting. Start posting on whatever social media platform you have chosen. Now listen to me whenever I say this. The purpose of you posting right now is not to generate leads. It's not to get a ton of likes. It's not to get a ton of views. It's simply to get some reps in. It's to get you comfortable sharing your message. Comfortable using the platform, and even comfortable getting on camera. Now, if you wanna know what you should be posting about, I have an entire YouTube video on it. I also have a free guide that's going to give you 50 different hooks that is down below. But talking about this in step 5, it is not so much about what you're posting. In fact, I don't care what you post about. This is about you getting comfortable actually posting. So what I challenge you to do is I challenge you before you're ready, To set a number of posts that you are going to get per week and commit to it for 1 month. That's all. Make the decision. Can you post 3 times per week for 1 month? That would be absolutely amazing. That would be great. Can you post only 2 times per week for that month? That's awesome. I'll take it. Let's do 2 times. If you're only able to gimme 1 post per week, that's fine. Let's start somewhere. As long as you are doing something and moving in the right direction, do not wait for everything to be perfect. Do not wait until you feel comfortable. Do not wait until you're like, I all of a sudden, like the Lord has given me the exact words that I'm going to say on camera. You have to do the action first and then the confidence will follow. The agents that run the most successful ads are the agents that have experience posting and working out their message. They're the ones that already have the reps before they put the paid ad spend behind. Now, obviously my course, Insurance Click to Close, I teach you how to formulate ad copy that converts. We're not talking about necessarily the ad copy that's going to convert for these posts. We are talking about answering questions, um, sharing myths that people believe whenever it comes to things in your industry. We're talking about sharing important deadlines and sharing information you believe that they need to know. So if you need some inspiration of what to post, I do have a free guide below. It's 50 different hooks that's going to jumpstart you on getting on camera. I also have other YouTube videos that break this down. But the thing that I want you to take away from this step 5 is in order for you to own your marketing, you have to be able to talk to your audience. You have to be able to know how to communicate to them in a way that makes them feel seen, makes them feel heard. You have to be able to come across as an expert in your field, as someone that genuinely cares about them, and as someone that has a character that they would want to work with. And the best way that you can do that is just by starting to post. And that, my friends, are the very first 5 steps for you to take to jumpstart your marketing. And the biggest takeaway from this is just start. I understand that marketing can seem overwhelming. I understand that you have been preached to for most of your career. Don't worry about marketing, we'll take care of it. Of course they will. They are making so much money selling you leads and locking you into these done-for-you systems that keep you dependent. My friend, if you are able to write this very complicated business that you do, I promise you, you are capable, you are able of owning your marketing. And the better that your marketing does, the more trust that is built up before the person sits down in the seat in front of you, it is going to completely change what your interactions are like whenever you're actually talking to someone. There is a way that you're able to break free from lead vendors, that you're able to completely own your growth. And I'm here to help you with that. So if you found this video helpful, please hit that subscribe button. It costs you nothing. It means the world to me. And as always, if you have any questions, drop them below and make sure that you grab that free guide. And I'll see you in the next video.
