Why Marketing is Confusing & Overwhelming: The 3 Parts Explained

Shauna Thoresen breaks down why marketing feels overwhelming: most people focus on only one or two of three essential parts. Think of it as a three-legged stool: science (data and metrics), art (messaging and trust), and skill (executing on platforms like Meta ads). Neglect any leg and the whole thing collapses.

This is why marketing seems overwhelming and frustrating. It's because many times you're being sold marketing as though it is just a one-piece puzzle to the rest of your business, when the reality is marketing is a 3-piece puzzle. It's just like a stool that has 3 legs, and if one leg of your entire marketing strategy is not supporting the rest, the stool is going to fall over. So marketing is truly the science of data mixed with the art of intuition with the skill to execute. The science of data is understanding your metrics and understanding what the data is telling you. It's going to tell you exactly where the black holes are, where you need to make optimizations, where you need to make changes, and where you are losing conversions. The art of intuition is knowing exactly what to say in order to get people to raise their hand to want to speak to you. Getting someone to convert and to become a lead and to show some interest and to start building that trust with them is a completely different skill set than sitting down and actually closing a sales call. With a sales call, people already have the awareness of the product and they're willing to sit down and talk to you. When we are looking at the marketing aspect and we are trying to attract leads, we need to hit people at different awareness levels. We need to understand what their pain is that they're going through, what the benefit is that you provide, and what their awareness is of the actual product that you're going to be offering them. With the skill to execute, that's knowing how to actually use the platform that you're utilizing, whether it is posting on social media, building a funnel, running Meta ads, and so on. Now here's the problem. Too many people focus on just one aspect or just 2 aspects of their marketing plan when they need to be focusing on all 3. When you get someone who's very skilled at running Meta ads, they understand what the metrics mean, but they suck at the messaging, your entire marketing plan is going to fail. The reality is you need all 3. You need the science, you need the art, and you definitely need the skill. If this is the year that you're ready to learn how to market your business online, this account's for you.
