How to Exercise When You Hate Exercise?

Sandra Roycroft-Davis, a weight-loss specialist, says music makes movement feel less like exercise and more like something you'll actually repeat. Pick a song you love, move for its length daily, and you're building a habit that sticks better than forcing yourself to hate the gym.

If you've ever wondered how on earth you're supposed to motivate yourself to exercise when you don't actually like exercising, I've got some fabulous news for you. Maybe you just need a really good song. Because put on a song you absolutely love and something interesting happens. Your mood changes, your energy changes, and sometimes your body starts moving before you, you've even consciously decided to move it. And there's actually some fascinating research behind this. Studies looking at music and physical activity have found that adding music to movement can improve exercise performance and importantly make the experience feel far more enjoyable. So this isn't just me telling you to stick ABBA on and dance around the kitchen. Although I'm absolutely going to tell you to do that later. So I'm Sandra Roycroft-Davis, Harley Street weight loss specialist, award-winning creator of the clinically proven Slimming Pod Programme, and Sunday Times bestselling author of The Weight's Over: Take Back Control. This research gives us a really useful clue about creating habits that actually last. If you want to keep doing something, Make it something you actually enjoy. Sounds ridiculously obvious, doesn't it? But look at the way we've traditionally approached exercise for weight loss. I ate too much, so I need to go to the gym. I've put weight on, so I need to start running. I've been bad, so I need to burn it off. We've managed to take something that our bodies are designed to do, And turn it into a penance for eating a pudding. So, forget exercise for a moment. Think movement, and ask yourself, what kind of movement actually makes me feel good? Because all movement counts. A 10-minute walk counts. Gardening counts. Walking to the shop counts. Playing with the grandchildren or children counts, and dancing around the kitchen while you're waiting for the kettle to boil absolutely counts too. And this is where music can be so useful. Think about going for a walk while telling yourself, oh, I really should get my steps in. Now compare that with, I'm putting my headphones on, listening to my favourite playlist, and disappearing for 20 minutes of proper Me time. It's the same walk, but a completely different experience. And that's really important because our brain is constantly learning by association. If movement repeatedly feels miserable and difficult, you're hardly going to be excited about doing it again. But associate it with the music you love, being outside, feeling energised, or simply having some time to yourself, and you've changed the experience. And behaviours we enjoy are much easier to repeat. That's what really matters in all of this because sustainable weight loss isn't about doing a heroic burst of exercise for 3 weeks. It's about finding healthier behaviours that you can actually keep doing. And that's very much how we think about behaviour change in general, whether it's eating or movement. The aim is for healthier choices to become easier, more natural, and eventually more instinctive. And that's also why movement is part of Slim Pod. People sometimes assume Slim Pod is simply about eating less and eating differently. It really isn't. We're working on the automatic patterns behind both eating and movement. So instead of thinking, I must exercise because I'm trying to lose weight. People can start noticing something quite different. Actually, I quite fancy a walk. And that might sound like a tiny change, but it isn't, because the behaviour is becoming less forced and more natural. So here's your challenge. Pick one song today that just makes you feel good. Your song, something that's meaningful to you, the one that makes you start moving naturally and bubbly, and you really feel the movement coming along. Put it on and move for the length of that song. Walk, dance, potter around the garden. I genuinely don't care what you do. And tomorrow, do it again. We're not trying to turn you into an athlete overnight. We're simply helping your brain learn movement can feel really good. And tell me in the comments what your song is. I'd love to know. We could end up creating the world's most eclectic movement playlist. If you're a Slim Podder, notice those little moments when you find yourself wanting to move more naturally. That's a real win. Write it down. And if you're not a Slim Podder but you love healthier choices around food and movement to start feeling more instinctive, that's exactly what Slim Pod is designed to help with. It's clinically proven, neuroscience-based, and a behavioural programme that just takes 9 minutes of listening a day and helps change the automatic patterns behind eating and movement. And you can try the Slim Pod completely free for 10 days using the link below.
