How to Lose Fat Without Losing Muscle (Especially on GLP-1s)

Sandra Roycroft-Davis explains why rapid weight loss can cost you 20-40% muscle mass, raising fall risk and fractures. Preserve muscle with resistance training, adequate protein, and slower weight loss. GLP-1 drugs don't cause muscle loss; the fast calorie deficit does.

If you're losing weight on a GLP-1 medication but not protecting your muscle, you're putting your long-term health at risk. I'm Sandra Roycroft-Davis, Harley Street weight loss specialist, award-winning creator of the clinically proven SlimPod programme, and Sunday Times bestselling author. In this video, I'm going to explain why muscle mass matters. How aging and GLP-1s affect it, and what actually protects muscle for long-term health. So why is muscle mass so important, and how do we maintain it? Let's get into it. Whether you are on weight loss injections or not, muscle mass is vital. As we age, muscle mass naturally declines, and during weight loss particularly large rapid weight loss, between 20 and 40% of the weight lost can be muscle. That loss has real consequences. Less muscle means greater weakness, reduced mobility, and a higher risk of falls and fractures as we age. A report from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research found that people with sarcopenia, which is muscle loss, had 2.3 times the risk of a low trauma fracture from a fall, such as a broken hip, wrist, arm, or collarbone. And it doesn't stop there. A systematic review of 188 studies covering over 98,000 people found that low muscle mass is associated with an increased risk of mortality across populations. So muscle isn't just about appearance. It's about staying mobile for as long as possible. Muscle loss on GLP-1s is not inevitable either, and it's important to be clear, it's not the GLP-1 medication itself that causes muscle loss. Muscle loss is most often a side effect of weight loss, especially when weight is lost quickly. When calorie intake drops, the body first uses stored glycogen. Once that is depleted, it burns fat, but it will also convert muscle protein into glucose as a fast backup energy source. That's how muscle is lost. Because GLP-1s can lead to rapid weight loss, muscle loss can be greater unless something actively protects against it. And this is the part that people often overlook. Protecting muscle isn't just about knowing what to do, it's about creating daily habits that support it. This is why long-term success depends on more than medication alone and is exactly where my SlimPod Programme fits. It works within the brain to help people instinctively want to move their bodies more, stay active without forcing exercise, make food choices that support health, not restriction, and build habits that continue even when weight loss slows or medication stops, all through changing the underlying drivers of behavior. That's what allows weight loss to be sustainable with or without GLP-1 medication. To reduce muscle loss, during weight loss, three things matter: resistance training, adequate protein intake, and sustainable pace of weight loss. Protein matters because muscle is built from protein. Exercise matters too. Research shows that a structured resistance training program combined with GPO1 medication helps preserve lean mass and improves insulin sensitivity. Markers of healthier weight loss. And here, strength training matters more than cardio. So here's how you can lose fat on GLP-1s and protect your muscle. I'm going to show you 3 simple exercises with a fantastic personal trainer that support muscle mass. Balance and mobility as we age.
This is a really practical one, strengthening the muscle mass in the legs and the thighs and the glutes and the core, staying fit and strong. So, dumbbell bench press, we're looking at at the tempo to improve muscle mass. Want to do 2 seconds on the way down, 1 second on the press, and that's how muscle mass develops— time under tension. Great exercise for the pushing motion. Humans can walk in 7 different ways. Push is one of them, and that's how we improve it, developing muscle mass in the area. One more, Miss Sandra. 4. Seated leg curls. Great exercise for muscle mass for the hamstrings, develops good muscles below the legs, protects the knee, good for longevity, for walking. Perform for about 8 to 12 reps. One moment, Sandra.
If you're on a GLP-1, this is the one thing you shouldn't ignore. Muscle mass is what keeps you mobile, independent, and strong as you age. And protecting it isn't about doing everything perfectly. It's about building habits that quietly do the work for you. Small changes prevent big losses.
