A huge amount of what we do every day happens on autopilot. In fact, research shows habitual behaviour can be at least 50% of our daily activity. Emotional eating can be one of those automatic habits which are often rooted in childhood when we we reward or soothe ourselves with a sweet treat, and then it just becomes a really unhelpful subconscious habit. If you want to break the pattern, being aware it's happening is so important. It's hard to recognize what's triggering emotional eating in the actual moment it's happening, so you need to sit and think about what might be causing it. Look at what happened in the minutes or the hours before you ate mindlessly. Why were you comforting yourself? Was it because it was dark and cold and wet outside? Was it because someone had upset you and you were sad? Was it because you were stressed after a hard day? Or bored even? Or was it just out of habit? For the next few days, note what was going on when you ate and how you were feeling. Once you get a picture of what your emotional eating triggers are, you'll be better able to deal with them. It really is about being aware. You think you're being kind to yourself by giving yourself a treat by eating, but actually there are other ways that you can do that and they won't make you feel guilty. But the first step is to know you're— that you're doing it in the first place. When you know it's happening, you can break bad habits and replace them with better ones.
