Today's big message: to beat the autumn winter blues, keep moving! When it's cold and wet, it can be really hard to stay motivated to keep the exercise going, especially if your default habit is to snuggle up eat more, do less, and hibernate. But we're not bears, we don't need layers and layers of fat, and although our overindulgence feels good at the time, it can also mean too much chocolate, too much stodgy food, and the need for baggier tops and generally feeling rubbish and hating what we see in the mirror. In the colder months, it's so easy to turn to food for comfort because it's satisfying and it makes us feel good. Well, for a little bit of time anyway. And then we feel guilty. It's so easy to go into hibernation for months. No wonder it's known as the winter weight gain period. You know, the average person puts on about 8 pounds over the winter. Isn't that shocking? One way to make up for those added treats is to make sure that you're conscious of your activity level slipping and do something about it so that you stick to the exercise habit that you've been working on so hard to build. Ingrained comfort-seeking behavior can easily kick in and you don't even realize it's happening because it's all going on subconsciously without even thinking about it. So if you're noticing your comfort eating and you've stopped doing the same amount of exercise that you were doing during the summer months, then get on to it and work out how you can improve things so that you won't be feeling yuck in January and get all panicky about your weight. I was talking to a lady the other day who told me the cold weather triggers her to eat more and stay inside. All through the summer she runs and then she stops in the winter because of the cold. No wonder she puts on weight because her activity level goes down through the floor. But there's an easy solution to this. If you can't go outside, then do something inside. There's plenty of YouTube videos that can help you to keep active, and if you can spare time to do an hour's run in the summer, then a 7-minute exercise video should be perfectly doable and a real doddle. You can train your brain to get the same buzz from exercise as it does from food and sugar, and the best thing is you feel great when you've done it rather than feeling the guilt associated with munching on the rubbish.
