How to stop comfort eating - mini-series, part 2 | Slimpod

Charlotte Roycroft-Davis explains how excess blood sugar, especially from hidden sugars, blunts leptin signals that tell your brain you're full. Stress and boredom make it worse by disconnecting hunger cues from what your body actually needs. Smaller plates and conscious eating can retrain these signals.

I wonder, do you know what hunger actually feels like? As a weight loss specialist with over a decade of experience, I can honestly say I think so many people have lost touch with what hunger feels like. They snack their way through the day because they, they need to feel better. They're stressed, bored, angry, or eating has just become a terrible habit. The hunger hormone leptin sends signals to the brain when you really need to eat, but this signal becomes disabled when there's just too much sugar in the blood. It's one of the biggest problems these days because so much of our food contains hidden sugars such as fructose. Then there's also emotional eating on top of that. So that you can see, it's so easy for your brain to forget what it feels like to be hungry. If you're aware this is happening, you can do something about it. Don't be frightened to feel hungry. It's really good for you. One reason that many people are not at a healthy weight is because somewhere along the line they've actually stopped listening to their body's signals and that naturally tell them when they're hungry or full. The mind and body have stopped talking to each other and they've just become totally disconnected. The signals will still be there, but we can get out of practice when it comes to listening for them. And so many people overeat because they're not listening for their full signal, or they've been overriding it for so long that they've forgotten what it's like. The question I always get asked so often is, "How do I stop myself eating too much?" Well, a little effort in this area will go a really long way. You could start by eating from a smaller plate, and then some practice needs to go in to reconnecting with these body signals so that they can help you get to a healthy weight and stay there.
