The Simple Way to Set Realistic Weight Loss Goals

Sandra Roycroft-Davis uses a train-journey metaphor to reframe weight loss: treat your goal as the destination, but focus on small daily behaviours as stations along the way. Repeated actions rewire your brain to make healthier choices automatic, rather than relying on willpower. She walks through a three-step worksheet to define your goal, clarify your why, and identify one concrete next action.

If you're someone who thinks, what's the point in setting another weight loss goal? I've done it hundreds of times before and I never get where I want to get to. I want to give you a completely different and actually quite fun way to think about goals because most people need to reframe them. Your goal isn't something that you either reach or fail at. And if you've struggled with goals in the past, it doesn't necessarily mean you're hopeless at sticking to things either. It might simply mean that you've been so focused on the destination that nobody ever helped you think about the journey, and it's the journey that's key. I'm Sandra Roycroft-Davis, Harley Street weight loss specialist, award-winning creator of the clinically proven Slim Pod Programme, and best-selling author of The Weight's Over: Take Back Control. And I've spent so many years studying the neuroscience and psychology of behaviour change, and this is something I also write about in my book The Weight's Over because it is absolutely key to successful and sustainable weight loss. Your brain learns from what you repeatedly do. Those repeated behaviours can gradually become more automatic, which means lasting change isn't created by staring at number on the scales and hoping willpower gets you there. It's created by what happens along the way. So, here's the fun bit. I want you to imagine your journey towards your goal is a train. Yes. A train. You've decided where you want to go, so the train leaves the station. Perhaps your destination is losing 2 stone. Perhaps it's about feeling healthier and more energetic. Perhaps it's being able to run around with your grandchildren or your children and feeling comfortable in your clothes again, or finally feeling more in control around food. Whatever it is, that's your destination. And then your reason for doing this, or your why, Is the engine pulling you towards it? Why does this matter to you? Because I want to lose 2 stone is just a number, but I want to have enough energy to play with my grandchildren or children means something. I want to stop thinking about food all day long means something. I want to feel like myself again. means something. That's when your destination starts becoming personally meaningful. But here's the really important part. Your train isn't going to travel there in one perfectly straight, uninterrupted journey or line. It's going to pull into stations. It'll slow down sometimes. It might get delayed. It might even... break down for a while. Perhaps you have difficult— a difficult week. Perhaps you go on holiday. Perhaps you stop losing weight for a bit, or life just gets in the way. And this is the point where so many people look at their goal and think, see, I knew I wouldn't do it. I've failed again. I might as well give up. But here's what I want you to remember. It's not like that. The train never goes back to the start, does it? Think about that. Really, have a pause and think about it. If you've spent 3 weeks changing your eating habits and then have a difficult week, those 3 weeks haven't disappeared. If you've started walking regularly and then miss a few days, you're not back where you began. You've learned things, you've practiced things, and you've had lots of wins. Your brain has experienced different behaviors. You're still on the journey; you've just pulled into a station. It's true. And this is where the brain science becomes really important because your brain is learning from repetition. Every time you repeat a helpful behaviour, you're giving it another opportunity to practise that pattern and really learn from it. So instead of judging your entire journey by whether you've reached the final destination yet, start looking at the next station. Where are you going? What can you actually do now? Perhaps it's walking for 10 minutes. Perhaps it's pausing before you snack and asking yourself whether you're genuinely hungry. Perhaps it's adding something nutritious to your meals, like protein, and just forgetting the carbohydrate, the refined carbohydrates for a day. These are behaviours your brain can actually do. Lose 2 stone isn't a behaviour, it's a destination. And that's such an important distinction because this is really what I mean when I talk about taking back control and obviously the book I wrote. It's not controlling yourself with more rules, more restriction, more willpower. It's helping your brain build the everyday behaviours that move you towards what you want so that those healthier choices can gradually start to become more natural. And that's what helps make weight loss sustainable. So, get a piece of paper and write down 3 things. First, where is my train going? What's the destination? That is important. Second, why do I want to go there? What will actually be different in my life? What's the What's the emotional reason? What makes it meaningful? And third, what's my next station? What's the one thing I can actually do that moves me in that direction? And if you're a Slim Podder, this is why your goals, your listening, and your wins work so beautifully together. Your goal gives you direction, your listening is helping with those automatic patterns, and Noticing your wins reinforces the changes you're making. If you're not a Slim Podder, the principle is exactly the same. Don't stare at the destination and judge yourself because you're not there yet. Focus on the next part of the journey, the next station. And remember, there will be delays, there will be stops, there might even be the occasional breakdown, or even— A little side route that it goes on. That's life. But none of these things wipe out the progress you've already made, so you don't have to start again. The train never goes back to the start, and neither should you. So, if you've spent years thinking, what's the point of setting another goal? I never reach it. I'd love you to reframe that and do something different today. You don't have to reach the destination tomorrow. It isn't a race. You just need to keep the train moving in the right direction. And if you're not already a Slim Podder and you're listening to all this thinking, yes, this makes sense, but I could really do with some help changing those habits, then that's exactly what Slim Pod is designed to do. help you take back control. It's a neuroscience-based behavioural change programme that just takes 9 minutes a day using subconscious priming to help change those automatic habits around food so that healthier choices can gradually feel and start to be more natural rather than something that you have to constantly force with willpower. And you can try it today completely free for 10 days so you can experience the magic for yourself and see what starts to change. It will help you get to that next stage of the journey. There's no calorie counting, no restrictive meal plan, and no need to be perfect. Just 9 minutes a day of relaxing listening. You'll find the link to start your free trial in the description below. And make sure you subscribe to my videos on here because we're going to keep building on this throughout September and looking at how you can take back control around food in a way that actually lasts. But for now, decide where your train is going, work out why the journey matters, and then forget about the whole enormous journey ahead of you. It's immaterial at the moment. Just get yourself to the next station. And that's it. See you next time.
