How to Use Affirmations So They ACTUALLY Work

Sol Brah breaks down how affirmations rewire your subconscious beliefs by replacing negative self-talk with positive statements. The key: write them in present tense, repeat them multiple times daily especially when waking and before sleep, and actually believe them. He'll share his personal affirmations in a follow-up.

Affirmations. Let us cast our spells into reality in order to shape it how we desire. That's what affirmations do. In this video, I'm going to be talking about affirmations, what they are, how they work, and how to use them in your own life. I know you've probably heard that affirmations are this weird girly thing, and you should just dispel that because there are really valid esoteric, metaphysical, linguistic programming, psychological principles all behind the practice of affirmations that really give it some validity. And they work. I'll tell you that they work. They've worked with people that I coach and so on and so forth. So firstly, if you've never heard of affirmations, what is it? What is an affirmation? An affirmation is a statement that you repeat to yourself. You can repeat it out loud, in your head, or in writing, whatever it is, and it reinforces a belief, perspective, mindset, or expectation. So an affirmation is a statement that you repeat to yourself in order to reinforce a belief, perspective, mindset, or expectation. Now, affirmations can be negative or positive. Later in this video, I'll explain how to use affirmations in a positive way, which is obviously how we should use them. But it's important to understand the negative side of them as well, so you can understand how not to do that. And most people are casting negative affirmations on their life without even realizing it. Here's an example of a positive affirmation: I am capable of handling challenges. The negative: I always mess things up. Both work the same way. You'll likely know someone who has that negative belief, or if it's not that negative belief, it's a negative belief about themselves and their life that they repeat, they affirm to themselves, and that creates a self-fulfilling cycle where they encounter that over and over again because they're affirming it to themself. Where do negative affirmations come from? Usually told them, or we've been given them by someone else when we were younger, and we believe that as the truth because we take the authoritative position of whether it's our parents, an older friend, family member, the government, scientific institutions. We're told one thing, we accept it, then we bring it into our reality. So they become believed as truth and fact and then cemented as part of our perspective and personality and therefore our experience of life. What we say is going to shape our subconscious. Okay, repeated affirmations become part of your mental default setting, which affects your mood, your choices, your confidence, and even how you notice things like opportunities. Or let's say how opportunities can even present themselves to you. It's all influenced by your mind, by your perspective, which is rooted in what you're affirming, how you're speaking to yourself and about life. Therefore, you need to be super intentional about your language in every way. Be conscious of what you say, even as a joke, or even when it's said insincerely, just as in passing or out of habit or reflex, which is a lot of these negative affirmations. That's where they come from. So most people are affirming all the time, but they don't realize that they're affirming into their life. So let's look at some examples of commonly said societal negative affirmations. That's too good to be true. Good times never last. I'll never be able to afford that. All good men or women around my age are taken. That's just how it is at my age. That's just my bad luck. Life is hard. Good things don't happen to people like me. So those negative affirmations you can already feel the resonant energy behind them. There's this victim mentality, there's this very negative perspective on everything. What makes these negative affirmations tricky is that they often, they sound wise, they sound funny, and they're kind of self-protective, right? People use them because it's safer in their eyes to predict things not working out because maybe that's been their life in the past, right? They predict that that's going to happen again in order to not get their hopes up of something future potential happening, and therefore it protects them from disappointment in that way. If they're just always negatively affirming things, then that comes true, then they're like, well, that always happens to me, I just have bad luck. So That's why they say them. Again, also socially entrenched conditioning. They were raised in a family or given these affirmations by other people, and they just never changed. They were never told, or they never learned, they were never educated, they never watched this YouTube video. Well, no one has until, until you're watching it now, until I upload it. But I really, as part of my, you know, my grander mission on this, on this earth, is to help people understand that their language literally creates their reality and to encourage them to not limit themselves in the way that they think and talk and these affirmations which limit the potential of their life and what they're able to do. And I try to do that in my interactions with people. If someone says, "I'm always getting sick," I'll just pull them up and say, "Hey, you're always getting sick." like, why do you say that? Or, I'm never going to be able to do that. It's so common, and people don't realize this self-defeating psychosis. And all it takes is for me or whoever else to just say to them, hey man, you can do that. Like, it is possible, and you should go for it, you know? Like, there's potential in you, and you should try to achieve whatever it is without just— you haven't even tried, and then you're already saying it's not possible. So it's all wrapped up in affirmations. It's all wrapped up in self-perception. And I like to just try to be this pattern interrupt for people who may not realize they're, they're saying these things. Negative affirmations, every time they're repeated, they strengthen this, this expectation of disappointment, scarcity, struggle in life. Okay. And then what we expect we see more of. If you've heard me talk about that principle before in other videos, luckily we can use positive affirmations to replace the negative ones that we may have picked up and learned, as well as just to create new perspectives for our future that we want to improve on. So we have tools to reverse the damage and then even improve further and further. So if you've done that before, I used to do it, whatever, It's in the past, it doesn't matter anymore. So all of those negative affirmations I listed before, let's go through the positive reversal of that. So you'll be able to see how you can use a positive affirmation to counter maybe these other negative affirmations that society has given you. So, good things happen to me and I welcome them. I create lasting joy and cherish the good in my life. I am capable of creating wealth and abundance. The right partner is out there for me, and I will find them. I am healthy, vibrant, and improving at every age. I attract good fortune and opportunities every day. Life supports me, and I handle challenges with strength and ease. I deserve good things, and they flow to me naturally. And wow, don't you just feel incredible after hearing those statements compared to the negative forces that were in the negative affirmations before. So see how you feel when you're speaking one way compared to the other. And that alone is proof enough that this stuff works. It's gonna shift your internal energy state. Even if you don't believe in energy, you're gonna feel better. And when we feel better, we live better, okay? This is the essence of affirmations and the focused thought energy behind it. It is your unique ability as a human that your words and your thoughts will manifest into the reality you experience. It is up to you, however. We have free will, we have the choice. We can choose what happens to us, we can choose how we perceive to see the world. And if you want to go down the path where you only believe in these negative affirmations and you're going to stick to that way of life and that's what you think that you want, you get the choice to do that. God and whatever other forces and this experience is not going to force you into improving yourself. You have to make that choice. You have to be the one that's going to take that step, that creative first step into shifting into positive thinking, because that's the first step in anything. No one can do it for us. Only you can take control of your life, and affirmations is a tool to help you do that. More mind power funneled into one principle increases its power. One anything. When you're thinking about this one thing over and over and over and over and over again, it increases its power. So when you create affirmations and you say them often, you're thinking of that thing and directing energy towards it every time you say them. Okay, affirmations will add clarity to what it is that you desire. And then they add regularity of you thinking of that. So, if you've never really thought about what it is that you want or you have a vague idea that you want, even the principle of thinking about affirmations and writing them out and regularly then thinking of it, you're already well on the way to taking steps to that because you have clarity and then regularity in terms of the intention and thought energy that you're putting into it. With repetition, affirmations sink into your subconscious mind. You start to believe them, and eventually actions— sorry, eventually with actions as well, they can become your reality. This is kind of the same principle that, let's say, negative forces will put things in the media to make people believe, because repetition equals belief. After a certain amount of time, if someone turns on the TV every night and they just see so-and-so does this, so-and-so does this, eventually, even if they may be conscious of that doesn't make sense— and hopefully they are conscious. If you're watching TV and news over and over again, maybe you haven't taken that conscious step yet. But if you're— the, the point is repetition in programming creates perception, and then perception creates reality. So we want to consciously repeat the perceptions that we want to create in order to shape the reality that we're building. Affirmations will overwrite— positive affirmations will overwrite any self-limiting negative beliefs that you may have about yourself or about not being able to do something, and then we replace them with positive thoughts. And beliefs which instill confidence, ambition, belief in yourself, literally restructuring your physical health, mental health, spirituality, everything. It really all lies in the power of the word, spoken word being much more powerful than anything else. The universe is a conglomeration of energy and information, as I've told you before. By focusing on one particular area and exhibiting action within this, you are directing your energy to that particular thing, good or bad. It is up to you, as I said, what you decide to focus on. You focus on your failures, your perception of failure. You focus on the traumatic times in your life. You focus on things that you wish didn't happen, or things that— situations that tear you off, then you can choose to focus on that. Sure, go for it. Water that garden, see where that gets you. It won't get you anywhere fun. So this is why I'm telling you affirmations are a tool in order to restructure all that stuff. So all these principles, of course, also means that we just have to make sure that we're not putting our word negatively on other people. Okay, let's bring your peers up by only encouraging, only supporting, no negative talk, even jokingly, as they— their subconscious will internalize it all the same as the self-talk. Okay, so if you're around a bunch of friends that are always bringing you down, have friends that are bringing you down, right, it doesn't make any sense. Be the person that is encouraging to other people and gives that energy to them and and tells them that it's true and it's possible because it is. And hopefully that can be the momentum that they need in order to shift into a more positive trajectory in their life. So the principles of words of affirmation is not only a self-personal thing, it's the greatest gift that we can give to other people in a lot of regards. The way affirmations can help is because you're becoming aware of what we're saying. When we're conscious, we can improve. Whereas before, when we were just kind of going through life and saying things and repeating things, we, we, we just weren't conscious. And so you cannot improve at something if you don't know that there's even a skill to be improved upon, okay? So even just understanding the concepts of affirmations, you don't have to do anything as such. You should, and I'll obviously, I'll tell you what to do later in the video, but just being aware, increasing our knowledge, you're going to improve. And you might find yourself, "Why did I say that? Why did I say that? And like, what does that actually mean? A funny joke that I think is relevant in this context, but what is it saying about me? It's self-deprecating. I don't like that. I don't want to do that anymore. I don't want to negatively affirm my life anymore." What you speak becomes reality. What you say the most becomes framed into your perspective, okay? Becomes the lens through which we see the world. Every time you vocalize things, you are spelling, okay? You're casting a spell in that you are directing your powerful human creative energy and attention towards said thing. This is not a woo-woo issue. It's merely recognizing that whatever we focus on increases in power. You should know this by now if you've been listening to my videos. It's a very straightforward metaphysical esoteric concept. Therefore, no matter whether you don't really mean it or you're saying in a joking manner, your brain and thus your subconscious is picking up on these cues and then matching and expressing that mental model shaped by language and thoughts and then impressing it into the physical reality of our existence. This is a constant feedback system that is occurring all the time, and we need to make sure that we're giving it the right inputs that are going to give us the best experience of life. Treat your word and the things you utter as concrete affirmations for the state of reality that you want to create for yourself because this is how it operates, okay? It's that serious. Not that you take things seriously, but it is that impactful, okay? Whatever you present to the world with your thoughts and your actions will send out these ripples that will come back to you affecting your reality. And we can consciously choose to do that in a positive, golden, amazing, positive way. Whatever it is that you seek to improve upon or bring upon into your life, you can say an affirmation for, which is great. Whether you believe this or not, it is essential, okay? It will happen regardless if you're affirming things unconsciously all day and night, and then you run into that thing, you'd be like, oh, what? How did that happen? Just random chance? No, nothing is random. The things that happen in our life have to inform what we're doing, what energy we're putting out, and who we're hanging out with, and everything— our thoughts— we attract the experience of life that we have. This is really, really, really critical for you guys to understand across every metric of existence. Now that you know this stuff, you can use it to your advantage. How do we use affirmations? The first step is to sit down in a peaceful setting, deep breathing, truly consider what it is that you want. Like I said, without this core framework of what you value and what you want to improve and analyzing where you've been lying to yourself, seeing where your experience of life is good or bad and what you want more of, what you want less of, without that you can't really create meaningful affirmations which are going to— there's a kangaroo near me— you can't create meaningful affirmations that are going to improve your life in the best way. So write affirmations that positively affirm these positive changes or life circumstances you want to— that you want to see. But you got to understand what that is first. You want to create a positive statement. This is important for affirmations. Don't write an affirmation where you're affirming a negative, such as, I never fail, I do not lose, I will never be poor. Okay, because at that point you're focusing on something that you still, that you don't want to happen. You're still focusing on that. So you don't want to do that. You want to just write a positive statement. I will be rich. I am rich. I always win. Then once you have your affirmations, just one by one, write them down on paper. You can play around with the language. You can just write down an idea of an affirmation and then be like, ah, that doesn't sound quite right. Sound out how it, how it sounds, like speak it aloud, and then, you know, you'll, you'll know when you have the right flow and cadence of an affirmation that you can repeat that feels really strong and powerful and meaningful to you. So you can write a few affirmations for each topic just to begin with: physical health, financial abundance, spiritual connection, relationships, mental mindsets, anything really, anything that's personally relevant to you that you want to improve the most. Will obviously be the focus of the affirmations that you first write out. And, you know, the more the better, but also it can be good, as I said, choose 3 for each kind of topic. You know, if you're well off with money, it doesn't matter as much, you want to focus more on your physical health, write 6 out for your physical health. It's really okay, be specific, but then also if you're just writing out well-rounded positive language and energy, it'll flow and it'll just feel really good. Doesn't necessarily have to be so locked into a structured plan and program. So just play around with it, see what works well for you. Do you want to just sit into meditation and then rattle off the first 20 affirmations that come to you? Do you want a structured thing where you say each one, each one? I will say that there is value in really structuring these things out when you first start, because that gets you into the flow of it, and it makes it easier to just, okay, I've got my bit of paper, I've written them down, and I say them 3 times a day before bed, after I wake up, during the day in my meditation, or, and just keep it in my pocket and I read them on the way to work in order to affirm the future reality that I want, and so on and so forth. So you have this list, you get into good positive energy state, and then you just read them out loud. You speak them aloud. Repetition is key for this, right? You want to repeat the list as often as you remember. 3 times a day, as I said, is a good starting time, but just do it as often as you can. Go to the toilet break if you're at work and read them in the toilet and just go over them and Like I said, the more you can drill these into your mind, the more that they're going to sink into your subconscious, and the speedier of an effect that these things are going to have, as long as you're obviously taking steps in action and shifting your mental state appropriately in order to reaffirm this stuff. After a period of time of using these affirmations, what you'll find is your affirmations will begin to just pop up into your mind, even if you're not doing a focused affirmation session, that is the point where they have begun to sink into your subconscious. And maybe you had negative thoughts about yourself or your situation that were there before, and they were the things that pop up. Now your positive affirmations are the things that are really just repeating themselves and in your subconscious and becoming the energetic state that you exhibit the most frequently and the most often in your life. This is a really cool effect, and it's actually very, very motivating to be, you know, in the gym, or we're just walking around, or maybe if you're feeling a little down, and then you just look, you just go, I will succeed, I will create everything my heart desires, and you just, you get this surge of everything. It's like casting a spell on yourself, and that's literally what is happening. That, uh, is pretty much how you use affirmations. One note I would say is that the times before bed and just as you wake up, the brain is in its most suggestible and programmable state. So that's a really good time to do these affirmations. If you can't do it at that time, pretty much everyone can, so that's also like another good habitual place to put the affirmations is because Most people, you know, they have a bit of time before they go to bed, they've done work for the day, and then when they first wake up, the first thing you do, you want to soak your mind in with positivity and positive vibrations, affirmations, and that will kind of set the tone for the rest of your day as well. So you want to, you want to kind of set the tone for your day so that you're thinking about these things throughout the day, and then a little reminder throughout the day. And then as you wind down and come into sleep, you want to pre-program your mind and your subconscious in that sleepy state so that you can kind of build that into your dreams as well. When you're in the kind of astral realm and everything's going on, the subconscious is ticking through things. You want to kind of put those thoughts and ideas into your subconscious before you sleep as well. It's really, really powerful. Another thing you can do is to record yourself speaking your affirmations. Most, you know, on the iPhone, use Voice Memos and just record yourself speaking your chosen affirmations. And that's all. You can listen to that as an MP3 track, or if you're a bit savvy with audio, you can add some healing frequencies to that, and then your voice on top of that. And it's just like a really nice thing that you can listen to on a walk or if you're at work or whenever, that maybe you can't speak them aloud at that point, but you can reinforce them by using this audio track. And it's actually very powerful to hear your own voice saying these things over and over because then it kind of makes it more real, and it also tells your subconscious that, you know, this is me, I believe these things, and I'm saying them. It's all personally relevant to you. So Recording yourself speaking affirmations is a cool little trick to this as well. Remember, fear or doubt are emotions that are going to decrease the energy, therefore decreasing the effectiveness of affirmations. So you really need to discard any doubt, any disbelief, just put it away and believe that they will work, because then they will, you know. It's like you can't— you won't see magic unless you believe in it, right? That's how life works. And what do you have to lose? Nothing to believe that these things will work. You're only really limiting yourself by pushing these principles away, pushing this practice away, and saying, oh, it's nonsense, it would never work, it's not scientifically proven. But I haven't literally done a scientific search, but I bet you there are probably some scientific studies, as I mentioned, the principles of neuro-linguistic programming and self-reference and psychology and simply overriding those with a conscious kind of self-image rewriting. Like, this is not nonsense, right? This is the point I'm trying to get across. Try it, believe in it, and try to get yourself in the most amazing, positive, happy, emotive place in order to say them, and you will see better results. They will happen more quicker, and yeah, your life will obviously reflect that, which is awesome. So that's been affirmations and how to use them. I really hope this has been helpful for you. My own personal experience with affirmations is that they obviously work, and some of the biggest breakthroughs in my life and life shifts have been because I started to use affirmations in order to reprogram my subconscious. Life started changing accordingly. So, you know, as I said, I've coached people that are doing affirmations and seeing their life change because of it. You just need to give it the time, give it the effort and the belief, and it's a really powerful practice. In the next video, I'm going to read a few of my own personal affirmations. So you guys can see, you know, some ideas for affirmations and structure them out accordingly, whether, you know, you want to use the framework of what I do, or it gives you ideas for other affirmations that you can use. I'll probably throw some nice music on it as well, so it's a little bit of a vibe. And yeah, I just think that'll be helpful to see how I do my affirmations so that you can draw some inspiration and do it in your own life. That's the video. Thank you so much for watching, and farewell.
