In this segment of his opening talk at the K5 Conference 2024, Stefan Wenzel critiques the retail industry's long‑standing practice of continuously expanding product assortments. He notes that for over 20 years companies have pursued ever‑larger assortments, yet the Pareto principle is taken to an extreme: less than 20 % of the SKU mix generates over 80 % of the contribution margin. Wenzel argues that reliance on marketplace components to outsource the costs of irrelevant assortment does not increase the relevance of the offering for customers. Simply shifting costs away does not make the product range more attractive or valuable to shoppers, highlighting a misalignment between cost‑saving tactics and true customer relevance.
