Speaker B argues that wasting energy on what you can't control is pointless, especially in negotiations where he lets others feel in charge while steering outcomes. Speaker A adds that the real skill is anticipating the future while maximizing joy now, because success without fulfillment is failure.
Do you focus more on what you can or can't control? What do you think most people do? What do you do?
Definitely focus on what I can control. And I try when I'm talking to people and negotiating or discussing with them, I want them to think that they're controlling, but I'm trying to get them to what I know and I feel is right for them. When you focus on something you can't control, why are you wasting your goddamn time doing that? It's a waste of time. And I always tell people, success without fulfillment is failure. Terrible. It's terrible.
And I'm going to focus on what I can control, and I'm going to train myself to focus on anticipating the future, but maximizing the joy of the present. Those are the people that have extraordinary quality of life because they don't just have the mastery of the science of achievement, getting and making things happen, which is a skill, but also they're masters of fulfillment. They know what's going to make them feel joy as well.
