Steve Varsano breaks down private jet costs: expect $3,000 to $8,000 per flight hour depending on the aircraft. Fixed costs like parking run annually, while variable costs hit $2,000 to $5,000 per hour in the air. Bigger jets cost more across the board.
Hey Steve, I'm thinking about buying my first jet, but I'm worried about operation costs. Could you tell me a little more about that?
Listen, the operating costs are obviously the main thing you have to worry about after you own an airplane. You know, it depends on the size of the airplane. It's a small airplane, midsize airplane, or a large airplane. Generally, you're talking about between $3,000 and $8,000 an hour. That's about what it costs to run a jet. What about just holding it at the airport? No, there's no cost for just sitting at the airport except the parking fees. But there's other things that you pay are called fixed costs. That's an annual amount that you have to apply to your budget. And then every hour you fly, there's an operating cost, which is called the variable or direct operating cost. And those costs run about $2,000 to $5,000 an hour.
So does the size of my jet impact my operating costs?
