In this video, Steve Varsano discusses a real‑world incident that occurred on December 20th when a Beechcraft King Air 200 flying from Aspen to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport experienced pilot incapacitation. The aircraft’s Garmin Autoland emergency system automatically detected the lack of cockpit response, took full control, navigated to the nearest suitable airport, communicated with air‑traffic control using a synthetic voice, executed an autonomous approach, landed safely on runway 3, shut down its engines, and allowed all passengers to disembark unharmed. Steve highlights the sophistication of modern avionics, noting that this was the first operational use of Garmin’s Autoland outside of testing, and reflects on the broader safety implications for corporate and general aviation.

A King Air pilot became incapacitated on Saturday, but the plane ended up communicating with ATC by itself and performing an autoland. We also have audio recordings of that communication on December 20th.
This is an amazing story. This just shows you that the technology on airplanes today is so sophisticated that the airplane can operate in an emergency situation. Let's hear what happened.
The Beechcraft King Air 200 was flying from Aspen, Colorado to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield.
That's only probably about an hour flight, maybe a little longer because the turboprop airplane. But this is really weird because If there was a problem with the pilot and he lost consciousness because of lack of oxygen, because there was a pressurization problem, I think, on this airplane, that would be pretty, pretty bad because the airplane would have no place to land in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.
When the aircraft's pilot became incapacitated mid-flight with no response from the cockpit, the plane's Garmin Autoland emergency system automatically activated. That system took full control of the aircraft, navigating, communicating with ATC, as I said, and flying a safe approach.
This is really technology at its best today. This is not just AI. This is actually a system that's built in when there's no human interaction that they have a chance to respond to the air traffic control system and nobody reacts. Then the air traffic control system, I guess, pushes some kind of a button. It hasn't really explained it here. Or the airplane, seeing that the person in the cockpit is not responding to a call to the airplane, it automatically engaged and took over the airplane, directed it to the closest airport and landed it. And then after it landed, it shut down the engines and the passengers got off safely.
What that communication sounded like. Pilot incapacitation 2 miles south of Kilo Bravo Juliet Charlie. Emergency autoland in 19 minutes. This robotic voice told Rocky Mountain Airport's ATC of the King Air's intentions and prepared the plane to land on Runway 3.
So this just shows you that the robotic voice or the AI voice automatically spoke to the air traffic control system and told them that the airplane has an incapacitated pilot and that they were going to be making this approach and landing at the airport. Of course, the air traffic control system and the tower control at airport will then clear the airspace for this airplane to be able to safely land.
And as designed, a few minutes later, the plane touched down safely, stopped itself, and turned off its engines. Reportedly, everyone is now safe, and Garmin said this is the first time their emergency autoland feature has been used in a real-world situation outside of test or demonstration.
This will really be a whole new world of making people feel comfortable about airplane safety, because really a lot of the big issues and accidents that happen with airplanes are because of pilot error sometimes, or incapacitation because of medical reasons or whatever it is. Now the airplane actually can take control and actually get a 100% success rate. And this is just another example that corporate aviation is at the forefront of advanced technologies. They're trying to always constantly improve cabin pressure, altitude, speed, fuel efficiency. Here, like, this is auto control in a pilot incapacitation situation, fuel efficiency and safety. So the airplane can actually take
