Steve Varsano explains how private plane charters create unexpected business opportunities. He reconnected with a client in an airport lounge and turned a casual chat into a deal for two aircraft. The private aviation community is small enough that key events and the right airports can connect you to almost any buyer.
I'm waiting for the pilot to come get me. We're going to go on an airplane and fly somewhere. I chartered a plane. And in that lounge, this guy came in with his family, who I haven't talked to for 4 months. He goes, "Steve, I really wanted to see you, actually." We start talking, and now we're talking about buying 2 airplanes for him. Just that conversation.
That pays for your charter for the next couple of years.
And even though I'm traveling around during the summer, going to great exotic places, but that's where all my potential clients are, or existing clients are.
So, you just got to make sure you go to Farnborough. No shit. I guess there's certain airports you're less likely to get business.
Actually, this place is the best place to meet them, because they all come in here. And then some of the nicest restaurants, you see these people. And I've been in the industry so long, I know a lot of them. And it's a very tight-knit world. It's a small number, and there's 2 degrees of separation from all these people.
