To find your protagonist's core desire, ask what they consciously want, what blocks them, and what they'd gain and lose by getting it. Express it in one sentence: my protagonist wants X without having to Y.
Chapters
This is a weird one, but here it goes. This is how to figure out your protagonist's object of desire. So number 1, what do they want consciously? So do they want to get the job, find a date, escape the cave? So if I pause the story and just ask the protagonist what they want in that moment, what would they say? Number 2, what is the antagonism? What is the thing getting between them and what they want? Is it a boss? Is it a boyfriend? Is the cave rapidly filling with water? Number 3, what are the pros and cons? There should be both an upside and a downside to what they want. The protagonist wants to take the job, but it means moving to Portugal. The protagonist wants the date, but doesn't want to risk rejection. The protagonist wants to live, but it means leaving behind their best friend. If you can't state this in one clear, precise sentence in this template, my protagonist wants X without having to Y, you haven't got it clear enough yet. Subscribe and like for more writing tips.
