Finding your voice means showing how you see the world, not telling it. Write the unnecessary lines that reveal your perspective, like describing Whole Foods shoppers with specific details instead of just naming them.

How to find your voice in writing. Number 1, your voice is how you see the world. There are infinite ways to describe any place or person or thing, and the way you actually describe things in your head is what makes it your voice. Number 2, show what you see, don't tell. I describe people who shop at Whole Foods as tall men with topknots and women wearing yoga pants dragging their 1.5 gifted children through the aisles. I didn't tell you what I thought of those people, but you know, based on how I uniquely described them. Number 3, write the unnecessary lines. A reporter friend calls these unnecessary lines because they aren't straight reporting. They are giving context based on how you see the world. Your unique way of seeing and describing the world is how you let your voice come through in the writing. For more writing tips, subscribe below.
