How to Give Your Environment a Want #author #writer #authortube #writing #advice

Give your environment a want. A wave that wants to drown your character, a fire that wants to burn them. When the protagonist's desire opposes the environment's desire, you get real conflict instead of scenery.

How do you turn a wave or a storm into an antagonist? You make it want something. Here's the problem: you wrote what the ocean looks like. It's big, it's cold, it's loud, there's waves. But nothing in that scene wants anything, so there isn't anything for your protagonist to actually fight against. And a scene where nothing is resisted isn't a scene, it's just scenery. So here's the rule: give your non-human antagonist a want, a desire. Now I know a wave or a storm doesn't have a brain, it doesn't have consciousness, but that doesn't matter. Write it like it does. Say your character is in the ocean. A wave breaks over him and drives him back under the water. Stop right there and ask, what does the wave want? It wants to push him down. It wants to drown him. It wants to hold him under. Good. Now, what does your character want? They don't want that to happen. They want to get up. They want to reach the surface. They want to break out of the water. And now you can write a real scene. You can show the protagonist kicking towards the surface, hauling his arms down. He fights the churn. The wave wants him to go down, and he refuses to go. That push and pull is what makes an environmental scene feel alive instead of just a forecast. This works on everything. The storm wants something. The fire wants something. The tornado wants something. The instant you know what it wants, your character has something to fight against, and now you have a scene. So the next time your antagonist isn't a person, don't freeze. Ask what the environment wants. Then make your character say no.
