Three rules for writing characters that matter: give each one multiple roles in the story, not just one job; build a network of relationships around them; and make each character see the central theme differently. Here's how to write a great cast of characters. Number 1, give every character multiple jobs. Don't have any character that is on stage and speaking only show up as a throwaway character that's there for a plot device. Make sure they are woven into the full narrative. Number 2, give every character multiple connections. Make sure there are social ties to multiple characters. Bob is in love with Janice but is also super Number 3, every character must give a new perspective on your theme. There's a reason that Elizabeth Bennet had 2 sisters. We get to see one that is dedicated to duty over love and one that is dedicated to love over duty.
