Won't my structure make my writing feel generic?

Story structure isn't a formula that makes writing generic, it's an invisible skeleton that prevents soggy middles and channels creativity. Tolkien and Austen use the same structural principles despite writing completely different novels. Without structure, scenes lack stakes and readers lose the sense of forward motion.

Nobody thinks that J.R.R. Tolkien and Jane Austen wrote the same book. One wrote about hobbits and dark lords, the other wrote about marriage and manners in English country houses. Completely different worlds, completely different stories, but they both use the same structural principles, and so does every other novel you've ever loved. A lot of writers resist the idea of structure because they think it means formula. They think it means their quiet literary novel is going to come out sounding like a Marvel movie. In fact, one writer told us that she felt that structure books were breaking it down to really boring sort of things that I don't want to write. She also said, I don't write exciting stories, and she thought that meant structure didn't apply to her. But here's the thing. Her soggy middles were caused by a lack of structure. The reason the middle felt boring to her and her beta readers wasn't because her story was too quiet. It was because the scenes didn't have enough at stake to pull the reader forward and keep them turning pages. Structure isn't a formula. It's the invisible skeleton that makes every unique story work. It's the reason you keep turning pages without knowing why. It's the reason you cry at the ending even though you saw it coming. You can write about ants marching on a sidewalk, and if the structure is there, people will care and read every word. Structure doesn't limit creativity, it channels it. It gives your reader the experience they came for, the feeling that the story works, that it's going somewhere, that it means something. Your story isn't too complex for structure. Your story is complex because it needs structure to hold it together. And no matter how much you maybe have even studied structure, you have not been taught the skills to actually put it in your writing and make the writing work. And so if you've been resisting structure because you thought it would make your writing generic, the opposite is true. Structure is what allows your unique voice to land on the page and keep the readers turning pages, crying at the end, and then handing it to a friend so they'll read it too.
