My 6 STEP Wavy Hair Secret's

In this live YouTube session, hairstylist Tami Grgas shares her personal journey and a detailed six‑step routine for caring for wavy hair. She begins with a brief prayer and explains how a change in her insulin regimen (as a Type 1 diabetic) coincided with the development of natural waves in her hair. She then walks through each step: (1) wash‑day routine—including washing frequency, conditioning, moisture‑locking leave‑ins, towel‑drying, finger‑detangling, and clip‑drying; (2) nighttime protection using silk or satin pillowcases and a scrunchie‑bun to reduce breakage; (3) targeted heat styling with a round brush and blow‑dryer to reset hydrogen bonds, followed by cooling; (4) application of finishing products such as Moroccan Oil, hairspray, and other styling gels/mousses; (5) morning refresh techniques like misting with a conditioning spray and re‑scrunching to reactivate product; and (6) cycle management, repeating the routine for 3‑4 days before the next wash. Throughout, she offers product recommendations, practical tips, and troubleshooting advice. She concludes by inviting viewers to join her Facebook community “Finding Your Hairstylist,” promotes a mascara/eyelash‑curler contest, and ends with a closing prayer for consistency and audience growth.

Yep, yep, yep. Hello. No notice about going live today. It just kind of happened. I've been trying to do this for a little while, so you know how life gets busy. And I manage a house, manage a husband, manage an 18-year-old son, and I manage a business. And I manage my 81-year-old mother, so I'm kind of busy. So this is my 6 steps, my 6-step wavy hair secrets. Okay, I have wavy hair. This is basically how I woke up this morning. I'll go through all these things that I do with my wavy hair to make it easy. Okay. I like easy hair. I'm— I've been a tomboy all my life. I know I'm a girl, but I just don't always do all the beauty regimes, and I'm not high maintenance. How's that? Kind of low maintenance in that regard. But the first thing I want to do is I want to pray. about this live today and pray for you. All right, I want you to know that God loves you. I want you to understand that you don't have to be a follower of God right now in order to watch my video because I'm teaching you about hair. But I'm gonna pray for you and I'm gonna pray for my video right now. All right. Father God, Thank you for this lovely day. Please help me to talk to the person I need to talk to on my live video today. Please help the people who do watch my video to be able to utilize what I'm showing them in my 6 tips for my wavy hair secrets. Thank you for your help in this matter, Father. I pray that you are with all of us and keep us safe and healthy. And yeah, that's about it. Thank you, God. Amen. So that's— I'm starting my videos now. I feel led by God to do that, so here I am. All right. So I have been doing hair since the early '80s. Some of you know that, some of you don't. Whoever's new to me, hi there. Whoever's not, hello. There we go. I love doing hair, other people's hair, not so much my own hair. That's my reality. So I have found some kind of sneaky tricks that I do with my hair to make it look more fashionable and make it look like I spend a ton of time on it. Crazy, right? So I'm going to walk you through these 6 steps. This video shouldn't take too, too long. So step number 1. Okay, well, okay, so first off, I need to let you know my hair has not been naturally curly since birth. I— my doctors disagree with me on this, at least the doctors that I've talked to about it. I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and I've been on insulin since 1984 when I was diagnosed. And when they switched over, I used to take— let me think. I started out with the semi-synthetic insulin. So I didn't have to go on the pork or the pork or beef insulin. I started out on semi-synthetic, but it was when I went on the pump in 2002, I think it was 2002, and they switched my insulin to this fast-acting— I can't remember if it was Humalog or Novolog, whichever one I started out with. And ever since then, my hair has developed this weird natural wave. And then in 2005, I had this baby creature, my little boy who's not so little anymore, and he has natural curl. I'm like, it's got to be the insulin, it's got to be. That's the only thing that was drastically different other than me moving to America, but I don't see that as being in there. And I tell this to my doctors and they'd be like, oh no, no, no. But in my mind I'm thinking, hmm, hormones tend to affect the texture of the hair. Um, hormones also affect when people lose hair. There's a whole bunch of things that hormones do to our hair. All right. Insulin is a hormone. Why would not putting a new hormone in my body affect my hair? So that's my conclusion. It's not, you know, has— this is me documenting it, okay? So anyways, I've been dealing with this natural wave since about 2003-ish because I didn't really notice it for the first little while, and it's gotten a little bit stronger over the years and gotten a little weaker over the years. It goes back and forth. So step 1 in dealing with wavy hair and curly hair, okay, super, super curly is a little bit different, but when you have wavy hair that has a little more curl texture to it, if you want to really bring out that curl, these are the kind of tips and tricks you should follow along with. Okay, so number 1. On wash day, usually I wash my hair every 3 to 4 days depending on how it's reacting and how the style's holding up. Okay, today is day 2. I washed it yesterday. I washed it, I conditioned it, and when it was super wet, I applied some product to it. I didn't go— the more you want— let me see here. So I've got some products here. I'm a hairstylist, so I have a lot of products. These are my conditioning products or my supplemental products type of thing, and depending on how much moisture you feel your hair needs, if you're— if you feel like your hair really needs a lot of moisture, something like this, that's a leave-in conditioner that you put in your hand and you scrunch in, is going to lock in that moisture a little bit better. This is a spray conditioner. This one I really like. It's called Humidity Armor. And for me, it just makes it so that it doesn't get staticky and weird when it's, you know, so Humidity Armor. That's a pretreat. That's something else. This is another leave-in treatment. This one, I believe, is one for curly hair. But I've got, you know, I've got Jack Wynn, I've got Raph. Mostly I've got Jack Wynn there. Redken, Diva Curl, Kuni. Like, I've got a bunch of different brands. I'm not— I do love some brands. But I'm not totally married to them. You got to try different things to figure out what works for your hair. Okay, I can give you recommendations, but I don't know what exact one's going to work for your hair because our hair is all different, right? So that's the first thing you're going to do is you're going to just apply a little bit of moisture, that kind of stuff. I did a conditioner in the shower that's a good moisturizing conditioner. Rinsed it out, put my, um, I have like a wraparound head towel that doesn't— you don't want a towel that is going to totally absorb all the water. All right, a lot of people in the Curly Girl world use old t-shirts. I have not done that because I have a towel that wraps around my head that works great. So basically I put that towel on, get out of the shower, dry off, blah blah blah, put some lotion on, and then I take my towel off and I dump my head upside down. I do not comb through it, okay? The more I want my, my curls to show up, the less I run a comb or a brush through it. So I run my fingers through to get all the— because you don't want it to mat up by your scalp either, okay? So I get all the, the tangles out and whatnot. And this time I used this product with it, which is kind of like a spray-in mousse, and it's called Kick Up. I didn't want super curly today or yesterday. I just wanted my waves to be there. Alright. So that's why I use that one. The more of a wave pattern you want to see. This is DevaCurl's Light Defining Gel. You want a heavier gel. Okay, I— oh, what did I use that one day? I don't have it here. There's one mousse product that you pump out by Jacqueline, that if you use a lot of it, your curl is going to be like, holy doodle. Okay, but I didn't want that much curl, so that's why I went with the Kick Up. For this one. There's so many different products out there. And one thing that I learned since having this natural curl, natural wave, is that if your hair goes crunchy after you put mousse in or gel in or whatever, let it dry all the way. Let it keep going. Let it go all the way to dry. And then you scrunch the crunch and it goes away. You have to keep scrunching it and the crunch part will go away. It's kind of wild. So that's these products. These are more of the, the styling products that I have. Now this one is more finishing products. Okay, I have not used any of these on my hair yet? No, I haven't. I had to think about it for a minute. I really like a nice strong hairspray, and I also find in the summer months when I want my curl to stay even better— excuse me— I will use a firm hold, um, pump spray. But I, I do prefer aerosol. That's just me though, because I, I like it to— so especially, I'll show you with my bangs here because they're flopping a little bit. I like my bangs. I like the asymmetrical look on me, but I don't like an asymmetrical haircut on me. So I always go over to the side and I will just spray in there. Hold it. Hold that up and let it sit for a minute. Maybe even— and there, it's up and off to the side, but it's no longer falling right in my face. That's a bonus tip. So anyways, after you have washed and conditioned and applied your product, you're going to let your hair dry naturally. Alright. I like to use jaw clips. I don't think I have any here. I do not have any here, but you can use like these kind of clips. You can use— a lot of times I really, really— my favorite thing to use are the little roller clips, like when people put rollers in and they put those little silver clips in to hold it. But you have to be careful with those because they have some of those roller clips that the, the tines have like a little sideways thing at the edge, at the end. You don't want those ones. You want just the straight tines. And you're just going to grab your hair and clip it, grab your hair and clip it, grab your hair and clip it. And you're going to move it around about every half hour. Okay. Because you don't want to have— I have done it that I've been busy and I've clipped it and it, it it is a clippy mess. So you do— if your hair is only wavy, you definitely want to do that, that step. Okay, so then, now that's step 1. You've moved your clips about and then you've taken them out to let it dry all the way the rest of the— that day. All right. That first day, is not the best hair day. Okay, every once in a while it would be like, oh, that worked, that's awesome. But for me, generally day 1 wash day is not the best hair day. So, you know, don't be going out on a big date or anything. Wait until day 2 or later. So last night I prep my hair for sleep. All right, number one, you need to have silk or satin pillowcases. All right, because the silk or the satin allows your hair to slip around. It also helps to prevent hair loss because when you have cotton pillowcases, your hair sometimes gets snagged and comes out and da da da da da. Silk pillowcases, satin pillowcases don't do that. And I've been using a silk or satin pillowcase for a long time now. And I also put it in a little— here, I'll show you. I take a scrunchie, put my scrunchie through, cross it, and then through again, and go like that, kind of like the messy bun type of thing that a lot of ladies do. Okay, so this is how I sleep. I can move around on my pillow and my hair kind of stands on top of my head. And when you pull it through and leave that loop, it kind of adds a bit of texture to it. Okay, now when you wake up the next morning, you're going to go like this and you're going to shake it out. Okay. Sometimes it will sit beautifully. Sometimes it will not. All right. So those areas that aren't sitting beautifully— I know, don't know if you notice my bangs. My bangs were not sitting beautifully this morning. And so I took a round brush and my blow dryer. Okay. I didn't use a heat tool on it. I just used my round brush and a blow dryer, and I pulled the round brush brush forward and turn my hair back and applied heat. Okay. And once you apply heat, you are messing with the hydrogen bonds. So once you've applied that heat, you need to take the blow dryer off and you can keep turning that brush, or you can just leave it in place and let it cool off all the way, because that's going to help fix those hydrogen bonds in the new shape. And then— you know, now my bangs look good, but the rest of my hair kind of looks bleh. So now I know I referred to hairsprays, and you know, I have heat protectant, and this is a really cool one— What a Tease Back Comb in a Bottle. It's sexy hair. I fell in love with that when I worked at JCPenney. But this— these are my finishing on my curl products. Okay? There's Prime Shine, which will add shine. I have Definiclay. Definiclay. It's very matte, and I find it works more for dudes. Okay, some girls like it, but I, I prefer the Defina Flex, which has some shine and some hold. But my ultimate favorite product to scrunch in my hair on day 2 is this one. It's a Moroccan Oil product, and I absolutely adore it. I don't know if you can see inside there. It's like a creamy It's, uh, and it smells awesome. As you can tell, I'm getting low on it, so might be time to invest in some more soon. So I basically take this product, okay, and you're gonna see how big and wild I can get my hair with this. You want to go— I don't know how many of you remember Phyllis Diller, and she always had the big, like, Big hair, man. I loved Phyllis Diller. She was so funny. Um, we have to— with our curl patterns, we want to give it that 1980s giant hair at the bar look. Okay, I could never do that to my hair in the 1980s, but I sure can now because back then I had straight floppy straight hair. So I'm gonna show you with this. Now, first of all, you want to emulsify it really well. Now, secondly, I'll see if I can do this so that you guys can see what I'm doing, because I like to dump my head upside down. I'm going upside down. Hopefully you can see this. And I'm scrunching it in. Just kind of going nuts, making sure I get all of it off my hands. And then come back up. Okay, let's see. So pretty big, eh? Okay, so now I'm just gonna shake it out a bit. Play with it a bit. And now— that's pretty much it. That's pretty much like what I do. I just kind of play with it a bit. Use a bit of my hairspray to make it stay where I want it to stay. Now I— oh, see, I always try and do it the wrong way when I'm looking in the mirror, or not in the mirror, in the camera. So I have it like this area here. Oh, this area here is disturbing me, but I'll just keep playing with it. Keep scrunching it. Now that was step 4. Okay. So step 1, wash, condition, apply product, dry naturally, use clips. Move it about. Okay. Step 2, prepare for sleep. Have silk satin pillowcase and put your hair up in a pony holder or scrunchie, whatever you want to call it. Step 3, use heat to fix areas not cooperating and let cool off. All right. Number 4, use finishing product. That's what I just did. This is my finishing product that I like, and then I did hairspray. Okay. Now step 5 is tonight I sleep in the same way, put it up on top of my head, sleep on my satin or silk pillowcases, whatever, right? Get up the next morning. And sometimes I take that scrunchie out and my hair is beautiful. I'm like, whoa, I'm good. And you know, I keep a mirror in my bathroom that I can like look at, look in the small mirror and see what the back looks like. I haven't done that yet here. It might look absolutely hilarious, but I will check it before I leave the house. So sometimes that works fantastic. Now, on the days that it doesn't work fantastic, do not put more product in your hair. This is when the hair gets too goopy and gets to the point that you're like, when you wash it, the water's bouncing off because it can't get through all the product in your hair. Okay? So what you're going to do instead If your hair— let's say your hair is just kind of not quite where you want it to be, but it's almost there. You can use a water bottle. You can— I like to use— where is it? My Vitamin Silk, which is a conditioning spray. You just need to give it a little more moisture. And scrunch it again. Okay. And when you do that, it will reactivate the product already in your hair. So there's that. That was step 5. Where did I put step 6? Oh, it's on a different page. Sorry. So step 6 is that you can repeat if you would like. Or you can start with next day being a wash day. I tend to repeat. I, like I say, I tend to go 3 to 4 days between washing my hair. Because why? Why start all over again? Especially if it's looking good. So yeah. So there, I reviewed the step, the steps. Now I would like to invite you into a Facebook group I have. This isn't just streaming on Facebook, so I understand that, and maybe you're not in Facebook, I don't know. But I will come back and I will put a link in the comments and you can come join my Facebook group if you want. Right now it's called Finding Your Hairstylist, but I'm looking at changing the name. I'm not sure what to yet, but it will still be in the same place, okay? Mm-hmm. So in this Facebook group, I share tips and tricks, and I, I like to help people. I, I helped a woman in Australia to understand how to find a hairstylist, and I'm hoping that she is being successful with it. Apparently she's moving and just wasn't sure how to go about it. And I want to help women to get the hair that they dream of. To be able to go to a stylist and interview them and understand about their own hair when they're doing that. Because I find a lot of people, like a lot of people that sit in my chair— I do hair out of my home, I don't have a huge salon right now. I've, I've done my time in those kind of environments. I'm I'm just doing a few people that I enjoy doing their hair and, and trying to help other people online now. That's, that's where my life is turning. And I want— I find a lot of people that sit in my chair do not truly understand what their hair is like. They understand the struggles that they have with their hair. But I've had customers sit in my chair and not even know they had natural curl. I'm like, "Um, yeah, you've got natural curl in your hair." And I've taught them how to play with it. And right now, one of those customers of mine that I helped her figure out her natural curl, right now she's going the other way. She wants to wear it straight. And I'm like, "That's fine." Yeah. It's just, you know, just blow dry it differently. Or, well, you'll blow dry it, uh, because for natural curl you don't want to blow dry so much, or natural wave, depending. Uh, so yeah, like, these are the things that I love to help women to figure out. So let me see. Oh, I almost forgot. I'm also doing a fun contest in there right now. And what we are doing right now— let me see if I can find what I need to show you. Uh, should be in here. Right now we are— I'm doing a contest. About mascara, okay? Because it's, you know, we all like to look pretty. I do like wearing mascara, but some mascaras are better than others. Some are crap and they cost too much. Some are like really good and they're cheap. Like, it's just sometimes so random. So I have this tool. Where did I put it? It's got to be in this one. I have this tool. Have you ever used— come on, brain. Have you ever used the eyelash curler? Oh, like this. I keep it as an example. You ever used one of these? Well, you know, they were good in their day, but now I don't know. Maybe I plugged it back in. I have— I apologize. I don't know where the heck it went. But in my group, you can see there's an older video where I show how it works and whatnot. I have an eyelash curler that heats up. So you, you plug it in to charge it, and then you push the button and let it heat up, and then you kind of just kind of brush along your lashes to curl them. Then you're going to put your mascara on. You do the same on the other one, mascara on, and then you're going to wait until it dries a little bit. And usually I'll go back and I'll curl it with mascara on, and then I'll do a second coat of mascara, and it makes a huge difference, and it gives great curl, and it's less damaging. These things can be very damaging. Finding a good one of these that aren't going to rip your lashes out, that aren't going to, um, crease your lashes. Like, and the thing is, the ones that I found that won't do those things don't really curl your lashes nicely. So I only keep this to show people because this is what I used to use and I refuse to use it now. So anyways, come join my group. Okay. Okay. You'll learn some things. You'll be able to share maybe about some mascara that you use that you love. And I mean, you know what? Oh. If you happen to know of a mascara that you adore that makes your lashes look beautiful, and you share it in my group, and you happen to sell that product. Or you are an affiliate for that product, let me know. We can do something. I've got about 7,000 people in that group right now, but I, I don't know how many of them are actually active. I'm trying to reactivate it right now. So come along, help me, let's educate people. Let's— if, if I find someone who has that ultimate mascara, I'm in, because I have yet to find it. And I— what I'm looking for is something that is going to be lengthening but isn't going to look like I have globs of black crap on my eyelashes. It's just gonna smooth out my lashes and You know, I don't want it to look too crazy, just a little bit, just a little bit. So anyways, I'm gonna pray us out now. Thank you, God. I hope that you've helped me— no, I know that you helped me to let people know about these hair tips and tricks today. And I pray that more people will see this in the replay and maybe come join me in my fun group where I'm gonna have giveaways and contests and fun stuff dealing with beauty. So, um, yeah. Father, please help me to be consistent with this and help me to grow an audience of wonderful women who want to improve themselves. Amen. See you again. Bye. Bye.
