The Big Lie: What You've Been Told About Time Management

Tami Grgas argues that being busy doesn't mean being productive. She walks through a three-step framework: pick three daily priorities, say no to everything else, and drop perfectionism. Her own life juggling an online business, part-time work, her mother's dementia care, and decluttering shows what focusing on one goal per area actually looks like.

Grab a pen, grab a piece of paper, take some notes. It'll be worth it. Today's session is all about uncovering the biggest myths about time management. Many of us have been told lies about how to manage our time, like doing more equals being more productive. That's simply not true. It's just not. There's this girl named Sarah who prided herself on being a busy bee. So every day she woke up early, packed her schedule from morning to night, and constantly checked things off her to-do list. She felt like she was on top of everything, responding to emails immediately, attending meetings, doing 100 little tasks that seemed— Yeah. Essential. Word in there, seemed essential. One day, Sarah hit a wall. She was exhausted. Her progress on major goals stalled, and her personal life felt chaotic. Despite being constantly busy, she felt stuck, like she was running in place. She was frustrated. She sought advice from a mentor. The mentor asked Sarah one simple question. Can you show me how many tasks on your list actually matter to your big That question hit Sarah hard. She realized she had been falling into the myth that being busy means being productive. Many of her daily tasks were just distractions, busy work, keeping her from focusing on her few important things that could actually drive her progress. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what those are, though, those few important things. After that, Sarah completely changed her approach. She learned to prioritize tasks that aligned with her long-term goals and started saying no to unnecessary demands. Slowly, she saw her energy return. Mm-hmm. Her work became more focused, and most importantly, she started achieving things that actually mattered. So the story of Sarah shows that the biggest myth about time management is that more activity equals more productivity. Often, we're so busy with small, unimportant tasks that we neglect what really moves the needle in our lives and work. Time management is not about doing more. It's about doing the right things. Once you break free from these myths, you can reclaim control of your day and spend time on what truly matters. Imagine not just getting through your to-do list, but feeling accomplished at the end of the day. That's the power of effective time management— letting go of myths that hold us back. Recount Sarah's story in a more— Have you ever felt like Sarah, constantly doing things but feeling like you're getting nowhere? I know I have. And when I was stuck in that, I— that's when I went into a very strong depression. It was not good. And I thought I had lost control of my life. But I had the same epiphany Sarah did and realized that I need to align my to-do list with my big goals in life. We've all been there, right? Checking off task after task only to feel exhausted and unsatisfied. Just like Sarah, you can learn to prioritize what matters. What matters most, and create more meaningful time in your life. Sarah's story shows us the myth that being busy is the same as being productive. It is just that, a myth. The truth is, success comes from focusing on what really counts. Thank you, Tami Grgas. Really counts to you. So how do we apply this in our lives? First, identify your top 3 priorities for the day. Not 10, just 3. Focus on what truly moves the needle in your personal or professional life. Truly moves the needle. Look at your goals. Then practice saying no. To tasks that don't align with your goals. This might be hard at first, but remember, remember, saying yes to one thing means saying no to something else. So if you're saying yes to driving the carpool, that might mean you're saying no to working on reorganizing your kitchen or whatever that bigger goal in your home is. or you drive the carpool and you don't write those emails you're supposed to write for your business. You're saying no to something else if you're saying yes to something. Think about your own routine. What tasks can you let go of? What tasks can you delegate? Take a moment to reflect and commit to some small changes. Now, I know delegating can be hard for some of us. I never thought of myself as a perfectionist, but I certainly was when it came to how you swept the floor and how you vacuumed the floor and, like, silly things, how you load the dishwasher. Like, I finally got to the point in my life that I'm like, Who cares? James can do it. He's my son. He now, well, he unloads the dishwasher and my husband and I load it. But we have to let go of our perfectionist tendencies and trust that other people can get it done well enough. Mm-hmm. Today we uncovered the biggest myth about time management: that more is better. You've learned that prioritizing, saying no, and focusing on the right tasks will bring you more success and peace of mind. Now I challenge you to put these tips into action. Choose one myth that you've been following and let it go. Start small today and see how your days start to change. You've got this. You do. It's— We can't manage time. We have to choose where to focus our time on. So I'm gonna give you one of my big goals right now. I am currently building my online business, and I am also working part-time at the schools as a para. I am also caring for my 82-year-old mother. Mm-hmm. Mother who has dementia. And I also have a family that I look after the house, all that kind of stuff. So I've got a lot of things going on. But I have to focus on— I have decided to take one goal from each of these areas and focus on that one goal. Okay. So right now my goal with my business is that I'm going to be more consistent, and I'm going to post on social media. I'm gonna do videos, and I'm going to let my audience know more about the things that I know about. Sorry, my— there's wind here, and hair is getting in my face. I, um, so that's my business one is I'm going to be doing videos. Look what I'm doing right now. And I'm gonna be posting, um, content. I'm focusing on Instagram and on my Facebook group. Those are my 2 focuses right now within that goal. So that's Number 1, for my business. Number 2, for my family, for my home. I'm focusing on getting our house cleared of a lot of clutter, because having my mother move in, and we've now been living in this house for 9 years, which is the longest I've lived in one place. We've got a lot of junk. We've had foster kids. We've got all sorts of things happen in our family, and we've just gathered all this stuff that never— that we never got rid of. So that's my big thing. I'm, I'm spending like 15 minutes every day finding things to throw away or give away. So that's the house, our home, family. My mom right now, my son and I applied for our passports. We're waiting to get our passports, and depending on— my brother is working on getting all the paperwork filled out for the home that she's going to go to up in Canada. I didn't tell you we're taking her back to Canada. She's Canadian. So She needs to go back up to Canada where they can look after her because she can't afford it here. Um, she's not an American citizen and doesn't have Medicaid. It's just, you know, a hot mess. So we're getting her back up to Canada. Her green card has expired, and therefore she cannot get an identification here. Therefore she cannot apply for a Canadian passport so she can get up across the border. So we're gonna have to take her to the consulate. We've got this whole— I've got this whole list of things I need to do with my mom in order to get her up there, but we're getting closer. Applying for our passports was number one because that could take 6 to 8 weeks. And then once we get closer, once my brother gets the paperwork filled out at the home she's going to go live in and we have a date for when they can accept her there and just, you know, wait for all these things to fall into place. That's my other goal, is working to get my mom back at home. And then once that happens, a lot of things are gonna change in our house and I'm gonna have a lot of different goals again. However, right now I'm concentrating on those 3 things. Getting my mom back home, getting my business functioning, and decluttering our house. Those are my 3. I'm not focusing on other things. I mean, there's 50 million other things I could be doing, but those aren't my focus right now. And I've committed to doing that for this quarter. So October, November, December. Okay. 3 months. That's my commitment. And I'm going to stick with it as best I can. So, yeah. So that's what I wanted to talk about today is the myths about time management. I hope this has helped you. I hope you can see that you don't need to let time manage you. And if you didn't notice down below, I've got a little ticker thing going there. Hello.
