There are 5 BIG problems in Mainstream Hair Care

Cosmetologist Tami Grgas identifies five problems in mainstream shampoos: harsh cleansers that strip natural oils, contaminants from large-scale manufacturing, heat-activated buildup that makes hair brittle, synthetic ingredients, and weak active ingredients that cause overuse. She previews gentler alternatives like sulfonates and glucosides.

Hello!
Today I'm going to tell you what they don't want you to know about your hair care products. Okay, there are so many different hair products out there, absolutely crazy, the choices out there.
It can be so confusing.
And I'm going to share what they don't want you to know about hair products. All right, my name is Tami Grgas. I am a professional cosmetologist and have been studying about hair products, the good and the bad. Um, when I see a new product, I go down this little rabbit trail and check out good and bad and figure it out and know whether I want to recommend it to my clientele or not. Right now I'm going to introduce you to the 5 big issues inside mainstream hair care products.
Okay.
Um, so like basically there's 5 problems in mainstream hair care products nowadays. Number 1, they use the wrong cleansers. They, they are used to remove oils, soils, and product from your hair. But a lot of these cleansers tend to strip your hair. They don't just remove the stuff that needs to be removed. It's a little bit kind of like The only thing I can think of to compare it to is when you take Comet to the sink. If you remember Comet, and then, you know, my grandma used to use Comet on everything.
So did my mom for a while.
It, it was pretty, a pretty harsh cleanser. And sorry, my foot's caught. There we go.
It's, it's harsh. It's going to strip your hair. It's going to, if you do color your hair, it's going to strip out your color. If you have healthy hair, it's gonna ex— like, strip your hair and make it easier for your cuticle to open up and for split ends. That's what a lot of these products have in them. So that's number 1, is they use the wrong cleansers. Number 2, harmful contaminants are in shampoo that don't need to be there. This is an issue with knowing where your shampoo is being made. Um, just nasty things can get in there sometimes in bigger manufacturing plants that manufacture other things. So number 1 is wrong cleansers. Number 2 which harmful contaminants can be in there. Number 3 is about residue and buildup.
This stuff—
have you ever experienced really, really brittle hair? Like so brittle that when you go to do something to it, it just kind of snaps off sometimes?
Yeah.
That is not your hair. A lot of times that is the residue that is left behind by some of these products that gets— basically, when you use a flat iron or curling iron, any kind of heated element, that residue is solidified onto your hair and causes it to be brittle. So it's not actually your hair a lot of the time. It's these, the residue. So one was wrong cleansers. Two, harmful contaminants. Three, residues and buildup. Number four, and this one really gets me, synthetic ingredients. They're not good for your hair. Why would they put that in there? It's just— I don't like synthetic. I don't even like wearing synthetic, okay? I just don't like synthetic. The only thing that I want that might be synthetic is some of the plastic things that I use. But plastic has a place, and it's not in my hair product. Okay? So one is wrong cleansers. Okay. 2 is harmful contaminants. 3 is residues and buildup. And 4 is synthetic ingredients. And then number 5, low concentration of the product and the quality of beneficial ingredients can cause overproduct use, which causes more pollution. So I don't know if that kind of resonates with you or not, but I am a heavy recycler in my house, and I would rather have an 8-ounce bottle of of good shampoo that's going to last me 3, 4, 5 months than a 16-ounce bottle of some watery shampoo that's going to last me a month. You're going to create a lot more trash. Um, if you don't recycle, it's going to be trash. If you do recycle, it's going to be recycled, but still And then all the contaminants that go down the sink into our system. Not good. Not good. So overpop— over, over, um, basically it's pollution. It's pollution. So one was wrong cleansers. Two is harmful contaminants. Three is residue and buildup. Four was synthetic ingredients. And 5 is the low concentration, like it's not very concentrated. It's very— a lot of water's added to it. Okay. So I'll give you a few better, more beneficial cleansers, beneficial cleansers for your hair and skin to look for. They're sulfonates, betaine, Betaine. Oh my goodness, I'm gonna have to spell this one for you. B-E-T-A-I-N-E-S. Some of them I can't even say. I hate that. Glucosides and succinates. These are ones that are going to be better for your hair and your skin. Okay, these leave the hair cleansed and protected. Instead of stripped and exposed. The garbage, like soil, products, oils, are removed from the hair, and the beneficial things are not stripped away. And that's part of what happens with a lot of these products that have the wrong type of cleansers in them. So I'm going to dive into each one of these going forward. So— This is video number 1, just kind of laying it out. These are the 5 big problems in mainstream hair care that I want to talk to you about. So I hope to see you again, and I hope you have a great day. Don't stress out about this too much. We'll walk through it together, okay? Bye. Bye.
