Chapters

Well, Argentine tango has mainly, I don't know, just 2 or 3 characteristics that made it pretty unique. First of all, there's not a lot of syncopations going on, you know. When you think about Latin American music, like, I don't know, salsa, son, you know, whatever, all the bass, all the bass, and I go— so you— they never go on the beat. Tango is exactly the opposite. It's like— it's always down to earth, you know.
Wow.
Um, of course we use simple meters, so there's no swing, you know. There's that— no, there's always like two tenths.— is more like that. Something that is really interesting about tango and that it makes it difficult to play in a way is that, you know, compared to all other Latin American music, it has one characteristic that makes it unique, and is that we don't have percussion instruments or drums in our traditional ensembles.
That's right.
It kind of— that has some ramifications that really make you know, this basic characteristic of tango. Number one, when you, you know, tango has mainly rhythmic parts and expressive parts, but when you are in an expressive part, you can do rubato, which you don't do in salsa, or, you know, it's all about the beat.
