Quentin Walston" (uploaded 2025-11-12). The excerpt is from The Piano Pod with Yukimi Song and contains a short multi-speaker discussion about teaching jazz piano: a host-like speaker asks where to start, a guest (likely the featured Quentin Walston) emphasizes focusing on melody and right‑hand improvisation before diving into complex jazz harmony, and another speaker gives a promo directing listeners to the podcast/YouTube channel. Topic: jazz pedagogy and melodic improvisation for beginner piano students. Language: English.

Where should we start in terms of like, let's say you're talking to a teacher. Where is a good place to start in terms of like teaching jazz style?
I think it is melodically and really getting to the base of playing what's in your mind's ear. I think piano, because it can be such a rich harmonic instrument, Sometimes teachers feel that they have to go straight into all of the elaborate jazz harmony and jazz chords and jazz accompaniment. And all of those are great, but so much of the jazz language is a melodic language and you can say so much through the melody. So, so I like focusing on first the melody, even with a beginner piano student, like let's just improvise with your right hand. Your left hand will come. But let's, let's get that right hand going.
