Chapters
We have to remember that in classical music, we are in a service industry. We are serving the composers. We are bringing the music to the public, and we do this through performing, through hosting radio shows, through presenting, through curating, through artistic directing. However we do it, the important thing is just getting the music to the people and sharing it with them, not reaching it to them, but giving people an opportunity to hear this music and to get to know it and to create contexts in which they can get to know it better, should they want.
In the second episode of Season 5 of The Piano Pod, we had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Jed Dessler, composer, Steinway artist, and host of the long-running radio show on WWFM, Between the Keys. Our conversation began with how he approaches his radio show with a sense of responsibility and freedom, putting immense effort into curating each episode.
So I thought, this is amazing that I have a show where I have complete freedom. At the same time, I really try to use the freedom responsibly. I've put a lot of time and thought and effort into this over the years, and I've gotten a lot of good feedback and suggestions, and it's going to go into its 10th anniversary next year.
We also explored his commitment to community building through his innovative programs, compositions, and events. Jed shared his insights on how the classical music industry can expand by offering the public more opportunities to listen, learn, and connect through meaningful contexts.
And when we talk about community, we're not just talking about people who've been a part of the community for a long time. Because we don't want to always preach to the choir. We want to be inviting new people. There are always going to be people who may be just discovering a Beethoven piece or learning about the piano for the first time, and you have to present something in a way that will make it attractive for them to come back for more. You want to invite somebody who may not know about this and to give them information but make them want to learn more. And then they can discover all this on their own.
