For Season 3, Episode 13 of The Piano Pod with Yukimi Song with Yukimi Song, I invited Krista Yadrow, music learning theory and audiation-based teaching specialist and founder of the Music Learning Academy. Since music learning theory was completely new territory for me, so I invited Celiana Sliashka, pianist educator and music learning theory specialist, as a guest co-host. Here is what Krista says about Music Learning Theory and Audiation.
What is Music Learning Theory?
So Music Learning Theory was developed by Dr. Edwin E. Gordon. He was a researcher, an author, a teacher, an overall wonderful person. I'm so honored that I got to meet him and learn from him before he passed in 2015. And music learning theory is an explanation of how we learn when we learn music. And through a carefully sequenced approach, students learn how to audiate—that is, they learn how to listen to, perform, create, improvise, read, and write with music understanding.
And let's talk about audiation. So there are several terminologies that I encounter as I was browsing through websites and, you know, learning a little bit about music learning theory as much as I could.
Well, let me first tell you what it's not, because I feel like audiation really has become a buzzword in recent years, and I've seen it defined as hearing music in our heads, like an inner hearing, aural imagery or aural perception. But really there's, there's so much more to it. That's kind of the tip of the iceberg when you use those words. Audiation is the cognitive process that brings understanding to music that we listen to, perform, create, read, and write, just like we use thought to bring understanding to words that we listen to.
When you first encounter music learning theory, Krista, What did you think was missing from the traditional way of teaching and learning music? Yeah, that's a good question.
So I think the sound before sight, and not only the sound before sight, because there are methods out there that don't introduce reading right away, and there are teachers that see the value of not introducing reading right away, but really the sequenced sound before sight, right, that is purposeful and research-based.
