Carefully Curated Facade: The Mental Health Cost of Performing for Likes and Validation
3 Jul 2025 · 10 min
In this episode of The Trigger and the Truth, host Tina White examines how social media’s curated highlight reels create a deceptive reality that harms the mental health of entrepreneurs, especially women in business. She outlines three layers of the "Social Media Mirage": selective sharing, exaggerated performance, and the resulting emotional impact—constant comparison that fuels anxiety, depression, low self‑esteem, and disconnection from real life. White then offers concrete strategies to protect peace: setting time limits, curating the feed to follow growth‑focused accounts, practicing gratitude, journaling, defining personal success outside of likes, and regular digital detoxes. She promotes her "Pick Up the Pieces" 21‑Day Emotional Mastery Strategy, a reset program aimed at Black women in business, encouraging listeners to detox, reflect, and rebuild emotional clarity. Throughout, she frames the discussion as an advocacy‑driven call to prioritize mental health over metrics, urging listeners to share the episode, engage in self‑care, and remember that emotions should not supersede intelligence.

Welcome back to The Trigger and the Truth. Today's episode is part of the July Mental Health and Entrepreneurship series. Let's stop pretending we haven't all fallen for it— that late night scroll where someone's engagement announcement, vacation reel, or a 6-figure launch party leaves you feeling like you're behind in life. And here's the truth no one wants to admit: we are consuming people's carefully curated highlight reels and calling it reality. Social media has mastered the art of performance over presence. I've learned this the hard way, watching people post luxury cars, soft life moments, and seemingly perfect relationships while behind the scenes Chaos, loneliness, emotional bankruptcy, sleeping next to someone who secretly hates you, is sabotaging your efforts, or sucking the energy and joy out of your life. For many women in business, this is a reality that's hard to face. This digital era didn't just give us access to people's lives, it gave us front row seats to their production sets. But what we don't see is the cost of maintaining that facade. And worse, we don't recognize the cost it's having on us. The Social Media Mirage: What We're Really Seeing. Let's unpack what's really happening behind those perfectly filtered squares and reels. Selective Sharing. People show what protects their image. Vacations, wins, new houses, new relationships. But where are the tears at 2 AM? Where's the therapy session? The bankruptcy filing? The loneliness. For example, that entrepreneur you follow with the flawless brand aesthetic might be struggling to pay her staff, but you'd never know because struggle doesn't fit the grid. 2. Exaggeration and performance. Let's call it what it is. Sometimes it's just flat out staged. Rented luxury cars, borrow clothes for the shoot, fake it till you make it. And listen, I'm not judging the hustle, but we have to stop consuming this as truth when it's really just content. 3. The emotional impact. Comparison is a thief, but on social media, it's a 24/7 armed robbery. We start questioning, why don't I have that? Am I doing enough? Is my life even meaningful? But remember this: you're comparing your behind the scenes to someone else's final edit. The mental health costs of the facade: anxiety plus depression. The more you scroll, the more you feel like you're behind. Research backs it. Heavy social media use increases anxiety and depression, especially when you're comparing your real life to someone's stage life. Like, Low self-esteem. When your worth becomes tied to likes and followers, you're never enough. The algorithm doesn't love you back. Disconnection from reality. Instead of building your business, nurturing your relationships, or healing your trauma, you're chasing metrics that mean nothing in the quiet moments of your life. Key insight: this isn't just about what other people are posting, it's about how you feel when you consume it. That's where your power is. So what's the move? How do you protect your peace? 1. Limit your exposure. Block out time. You don't need to consume content all day long. Set limits and stick to them. 2. Curate what you consume. Follow people who feed your growth, not your insecurity. Mute or unfollow anyone who makes you feel small, even if they mean well. 3. Focus on your real life. Stop chasing aesthetics and start building a life you don't need a vacation from. Whether it's your business, your family, or your healing, that's the real success. 4. Practice gratitude. Gratitude shifts your mind from scarcity to abundance. Every night, ask yourself, what did I win at today? Not what Instagram told me to care about. And you know what else? Detox regularly. That's why I created the Pick Up the Pieces 21-Day Emotional Mastery Strategy for Black Women in Business. It's a reset. It's the work behind the success. It's 21 days of reconnecting with yourself, not your online persona. Part of emotional mastery is learning when to unplug, reflect, and reset your nervous system. If social media is running your life, Your business will never feel enough, your relationships will suffer, and your self-worth will shrink to match your engagement stats. Social media detox challenge: Pick one day this week, log off, delete the app if you have to. Spend that time reconnecting with people who know your soul, not your story. Reality check: Journal. The next time you catch yourself comparing, ask yourself, what am I really comparing? What's true about my life right now? What's one thing I'm grateful for today? Define your own success. Write your definition of success. Not Instagram's, not TikTok's. Is it joy, peace, freedom? Keep that definition somewhere visible. Read it every morning before you scroll.
Juggling clients, deadlines, family, and pressure on autopilot? But behind the scenes, you're overwhelmed and still expected to keep it all together. Let's call it what it is. Performing for likes is emotional exhaustion in disguise. Here's how it looks in real life: posting your vacation not because you enjoyed it, but because you want people to think you're living your best life. Or sharing your wins online when you haven't even paused long enough to celebrate them yourself. Reposting quotes about healing while ignoring the chaos still playing out in your personal life. Curating every photo to be perfect while feeling empty behind the scenes. At the end of the day, we've all done it, myself included, and that's emotional labor you can't afford. The reality is every time we post for validation instead of purpose, we lose a little bit of peace, and peace is the one thing social media can't give you. So how do you stop performing and start protecting your peace? Post when you feel inspired, not when you feel empty. Celebrate your wins in private before broadcasting them to strangers. Take breaks from posting just to see if you can still love your life when no one's watching. Remind yourself, the number of likes will never define your worth. Mental health is more important than metrics. Peace of mind is more important than public applause. Emotional mastery is real currency and is more important than social media clout. Build a life you don't need to edit. Love a life you don't have to prove. And if you're ready to reclaim your emotional clarity, start the Pick Up the Pieces 21-Day Emotional Mastery Strategy for Black Women in Business and detox from validation culture for real.
